  1. Agree on that..... almost like he will not admit he is good doing songs. Much of Williams music / themes are very lyrical..... But just see how clever he is with orchestration and arrangements with OTHER composers / writers works: "Fiddler on the roof"...... "Goodbye mr chips" .... almost like making them his own.......
  2. Yes... remember when i saw this at a reccord store.... I had the JANE EYRE suite ( Boston Pops Orch. CD ) ... But I went total when i saw and heard THE REIVERS track..... wished there was more from it.....
  3. should be..... available in imusic.dk, amazon, discogs.com among others....... ( fantastic sound.... )
  4. The Banda Sonora release got best sound quality i think.... More clear. Love it.
  5. Cinderella Liberty - is a FANTASTIC release . Williams goes JAZZ / FUNK on 2 cues ..... also Toots Thielemans on harmonica .... love it. By the way - think Paul Williams vocal fits the tone of the movie..... Remember first time i heard the album - got the old OST-LP ..... the reaction ( haven't seen the movie ) : " WHAT THE...... ..... "
  6. One could ask .... " ".... why do you need it? " " ... Don't you have the osts?..." Well - I think its a fairly good collection of SOME of JW's film music / concert music. The presentation is superb / fantastic.. its not every day you will see and get a collection like this. For me - the 20th disc was a must buy..... with the songs - especially " Make me Rainbows " - and the song from " Daddys-gone-a-hunting " I would never ever rip the cd's into computer or something.... i am very old fashioned . want my music on CD
  7. Got mine today This reminds me of "photo - books " aka coffee table books you get in bookshops.... . super quality photos / large booklet with interview and more ..... ( The picture with Spielberg, Williams and Toots Thielemans at the Sugarland Express recording session is fantastic..... remember - this is the start of a remarkable Director / Composer relationship..... )
  8. Received it today . Really like the arrangement of "nice to be around ". ( lovely harpsichord in it ). .... Schindler's List also sounds good... even it's a small group of talented players. Good sound quality..... nice booklet to. ASM signature written with a sort of silver pen.
  9. About the climatic finish i "SUGARLAND EXPRESS " so much going on in short time... ....Clovis ( Lou-jeans husband ) deadly hit by bullits,...... Lou-Jean screaming on the backseat of the stole Police car...... and the the music.... THE BATON .... ....had this to say about the movie and score - go to about 16:10 .... music from the finale /climax Episode 37 - The Sugarland Express | The Baton: A John Williams Musical Journey (podbean.com)
  10. About "SUGARLAND.... " I remember Ian Freer ( from EMPIRE film magazine ) in his book " the complete Spielberg" wrote something like Spielberg wanted a sound he heard in "Rievers " and "the cowboys" ..... Symphonic , big , sweeping.... Instead Williams - after seeing the film - wanted to go another way.... small scale , some times tender ... something like that. (Maybe Missouri Breaks "style "). Yes we have guitar(s), the great Toots Tielemans , and percussion.... strings also.... in the finale , goes from small town in sugarland to mexican border - that always give me goosebumbs - the music starts when the police starts firing at the hijacked police car in the small town - we hear the orchestra comes in.... dramatic .... stirring ..... oh my .... Regarding the theme: Like the film version/ main title of the theme more than the slow concert version Williams wrote / arranged. Also think it is catchy
  11. would have been fantastic if they had included Tony Bennetts take on MY INAMORATA ..... from " Not with my Wife, you Don’t!"
  12. Disc 20 for me is A-MUST-HAVE ( Daddy's gone A-hunting , Checkmate among others..... ) agree .... think it is even more powerful /stirring...... love this version
  13. Hmmmm... Seems that they choose the Sinatra version regarding DREAM AWAY..... ( the theme from "....CAT DANCING " ) Always found it a bit pale ..... ......at least when I compare it to the Paul Williams Version - a bit longer with more lyrics ( Paul Williams wrote the lyrics ) - John Williams also arranged and conducted this version . what do you think..... ?
  14. Carol Burnett did a nice , charming version of "Love's the only game in town " ( the PETE 'N' TILLIE theme ) .... I hope THAT is on the set - ( NOT the one with Walther Matthau..... ) In the later ... the lyrics are almost SPOKEN by Matthau .
  15. I love many of Williams' pre-JAWS scores / music . It is so diverse - and much of it NOT boring. The quality is also high..... like film scores from CINDERELLA LIBERTY, THE COWBOYS, THE LONG GOODBYE, THE PAPER CHASE, SUGARLAND EXPRESS, IMAGES, CHECKMATE, PENELOPE among others..... I listen to it just as much as his more known ( and more famous ) music . Wish we got more of his TV-music: "Chrysler Theater" & "Kraft Suspense theatre".....
  16. - Yes, regarding - DADDY'S GONE A-HUNTING - it must be the song single - very different in orchestration than the film edition ..... Lyrics ( by Dory Previn ) and singer ( Lyn Roman aka Linda Griner ) are the same .
  17. Received my copy today...... Happy I was able to order it fast . ( I could follow it all the way on the APC site - it had a stop in Amsterdam, Holland on its journey to Denmark. ) First listen :
