MikeH reacted to crocodile in New details on Williams / Ross Dial Of Destiny collaboration via new LA Times article by Tim Greiving
Nemesis movie might have been a disaster but the score is really good actually. I quite enjoy it.

MikeH reacted to GerateWohl in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Blu Ray to feature Isolated Score Track
Despite all the complaints here and my personal judgment on the movie itself, the score really shines in the movie. It really was a joy for me experiencing it watching the film. It is some time ago that I felt that way in the cinema. Probably at watching The Force Awakens?

MikeH reacted to Brando in John Williams to be in “If These Walls Could Sing” Abbey Road Disney+ Documentary, December 16th
I would like both. Think of the 90’s-00’s making of documentary’s. Lots of sitting there and talking, but plenty of on set stuff as well. Recording session/booth talks would be great. If they did a documentary like this, I would also hope, on the discussion of Superman, we might find out what specifically made JW walk out of Superman 2. That’d be an interesting tidbit.

MikeH reacted to Bayesian in HOOK (1991) - NEW! 2023 3-CD Ultimate Edition Produced, Edited, and Mastered by Mike Matessino featuring all Williams/Bricusse songs
I’m in total disbelief right now. How long has our community obsessed over a new, better Hook? I joined in 2015 and it was already received wisdom that that score needed a new presentation. And so, year after year, we’d hype ourselves over the possibility of a Hook expansion, talking about anniversaries and studio intrigue and all the rest. And year after year, disappointment awaited us. Until today. Improbably, unbelievably, we no longer have to wait. No more pleading! No more teeth gnashing! No more disappointment! It’s finally, actual-factually coming!!
Thank you MM and everyone else involved in making this dream come true!! And @Jay, how long have you had to sit on this news?? Your restraint here — not a single hint from you that this was in the pipeline— was phenomenal. Kudos, sir.

MikeH reacted to mrbellamy in New details on Williams / Ross Dial Of Destiny collaboration via new LA Times article by Tim Greiving
"Helena's Theme" alone will make Indy 5 look like a pretty elegant career capper for the great John Williams should it turn out that way. Nobody's gonna care about any of this other shit.

MikeH reacted to Richard Penna in New details on Williams / Ross Dial Of Destiny collaboration via new LA Times article by Tim Greiving
Helena's Theme is clearly the sort of music Williams wants to be composing nowadays - concert material essentially. Chaotic Indy Action Sequence #15 may not be high on the list of things he finds interesting to do nowadays, and my personal view is that it shows. If Mangold selected the lifts from the other films, it may be a combination of Williams not wanting to have that fight, and maybe just being happy that there goes another couple of minutes of complicated score he doesn't have to write.
Or put it this way: Williams at 90 something has the same work ethic as other composers half his age - do your best, and when the schedule, workload and related factors makes things a bit tricky (in their case, due to the amount of work they take on, and in JW's case... age), turn to trusted colleagues to help finish it.

MikeH reacted to Thor in Simon Franglen's AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER (2022)
By the way, I should point out that I rewatched the film two days ago, on Disney+, for the first time since the IMAX press screening. I've been holding off because I wanted new speakers in the house. But by GOLLY, how great it is. Just as I remembered. Totally absorbing. "Pure Cinema" at its finest. Sigourney Weaver's teenage character breaks my heart!

MikeH reacted to leeallen01 in Simon Franglen's AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER (2022)
It's crazy how hard this film and score hit me. I went into it liking the first film, but mainly I was interested in the technology and seeing how amazing it would look. I was overwhelmed by it. The film and score are very high on my all-time lists.
The theatre experience of the film and the power of the score were perfect, but I can easily watch it at home and have just as meaningful experience. And not a week goes by where I don't listen to pieces of the score.

MikeH reacted to Arpy in New details on Williams / Ross Dial Of Destiny collaboration via new LA Times article by Tim Greiving
I agree with Mangold that Helena's theme isn't the right fit for her character - she's more of asshole than a heroine - but the theme is so gorgeous and Williams' ability to adapt it and use it in different modes is what makes it work.

MikeH reacted to Richard Penna in New details on Williams / Ross Dial Of Destiny collaboration via new LA Times article by Tim Greiving
Williams recorded an entire score, but who's to say Mangold and the editors didn't use any of Ross' material?
Of course I'm being devil's advocate. It's too much fun watching you guys panic over whether you're hearing Williams or not.

Two of those had directors who seem to really respect the scoring process. I don't think it's a coincidence that he was able to write much better scores for TLJ and DoD than for TFA and TROS.
