Anybody know what particular piece by Mozart Bernstein is playing at 27:45? It reminds me of Munich.
Are you thinking of the national anthem of Israel- Hatikvah (The Hope)?
Wow, I had no idea that was the Israeli national anthem! Always thought it was an original JW tune. I wonder if it bears any connection to the Mozart piece?

Such an amazing forum, every once in a while you get a mindblowing post/link like this! How cool is that documentary, fantastic is an understatement.
Thank you indy4!!

No prob, SF1_freeze! You should check out Bernstein's other videos on YouTube, he did a ton of musical education stuff.

It is mozart's Twelve Variations on "Ah vous dirai-je, Maman"
Thanks!

I will never understand the continuing backlash over a relatively small and easy-to-adapt-to change in the MB's format. i think its fine as it is

I would rank them as follows:
1) Jane Eyre
2) Close Encounters
3) Dracula
4) 1941
5) Star Wars
6) Superman: The Movie
7) Family Plot
8) Black Sunday
9) Jaws
10) Jaws 2

These are the ones I posted in the other thread
Another one I recently stumbled upon: this gorgeous song by Camille Saint-Saens sounds very similar to JW's "When You're Alone" from Hook. At 1:28:
Also this one from War Horse, which I think can be considered more of an homage to Vaughn Williams than a theft (like how composers have been referencing folk music for centuries). At 0:12
I'll start with a few I remember right now!
0:00 of Shostakovich's 5th symphony movement 1--->"Gillian's Powers" from The Fury
0:00 of this video of Dvorak's Dumky Trio---->Flying Theme from E.T.
0:00 of Copland's A Lincoln Portrait---->war motif in SPR, War Horse and Lincoln
0:13 - 0:40 of Copland's Appalachian Spring-->The People's House from Lincoln
0:11 of Mancini's "Sweetheart Tree"--->With Malice Towards None
4:17 and 6:33 of Holst's Mars: Bringer of War-->The Death Star and Main Title (respectively) from SW
0:00 of "The Charge" from War Horse (the play)--->"Charge and Capture" from War Horse (the movie)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCFupJ8JqAw
0:00 of "Death of Falstaff" ---> "My Friend the Brachiosaurus"
0:18 of Bernstein's "Make Our Garden Grow"---> Luke and Leia's Theme
0:00 of Tchaikovsky's Trepak--->"Making hte Plane' from Home Alone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2ISRMSIyX8
0:11 of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of Sugar Plum Fairy" --> Main Titles from Home Alone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwqCdJqzlFU
14:12 of Strauss' Death and Transfiguration----> Love Theme from Superman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFSLw2UWdB8
3:39 of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring--->"Death Star" from SW (and other places)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGFRwKQqbk4
0:00 of Delerue's Agnes of God Theme ---->Face of Pan

i hope you're right! He did a similar thing for Conversations (premiering a few movements before the entire piece was written)

Didn't Maurice Murphy die from a surgeon's mistake?

This thread is essentially what I was trying to do with the flop I started a few months ago. I'll post some contributions later this week! Already enjoying some of the above posts.

Cool! Did they ever release On the Waterfront yet?

I'd say it has a lot in common with LOST IN SPACE, though it's unique among Williams's film work.
In what way? I hear similarities here and there, but overall I'd say it's an entirely different appraoch to space music
-
The opening of JW's sinfonietta is also similar to the same part from Shostakovich's 5th.
Clearly words like "stealing" and "plagiarism" are inaccurate. Williams is of course influenced by his predecessors, same as any composer. Many musicians and composers in this forum are no doubt familiar with the experience of creating something "original," only to discover later that it was influenced by something now mostly forgotten by the conscious mind.
I'm not trying to attach any sort of judgement to these discoveries. it's just interesting to me to hear what pieces have influenced JW. it used to bother me but not anymore, now it's just fun to try and pick them out

I only have about 13 of his scores. But I like what I have, especially TMP, The Omen Trilogy (especially Final Conflict), Twilight Zone and "Soarin."
-
This kind of behavior runs the risk of permanently ruining those great moments. I always try to leave at least a day between listens to the same track, to avoid overplaying it.
-
So Williams did score it!

-
One thing that bothers me is that, since its premiere at the baseball game, the tempo has been significantly reduced in every recording. Not sure why this is the case. Maybe Williams marked the tempo slower, but for whatever reason (time shortage, or just a mistake) he conducted at a much faster tempo at the game?

Great interview with JW on the trumpet concerto: http://www.trumpetguild.org/_72820_archive/1997journal/9705thor.pdf

I am very familiar with his film work but no so much his concert pieces. Can you recommend his best concert pieces which have a higher tempo and are quite exciting to listen to?
I would avoid all the concerti and Heartwood. It sounds like you want something that is easily accessible, and while these are great, they all take some time to truly appreciate.
His easiest to digest concert works are:
- Liberty Fanfare
- all his Olympic pieces (there are 4 of them)
- Fanfare for Fenway
- For the President's Own
- Sound the Bells!

I don't think we should be looking for something "different" in an arrangement of this piece. If we get too inventive then it goes away from being something respectful or celebratory and becomes something more of an artist trying to show off - kind of like what we see with vocalists at the Super Bowl year after year. The Star-Spangled Banner shouldn't be used as a personal artistic platform to that degree, lest we start alienating the people whom the anthem really matters to.
Perhaps you're right, but as I said I think JW's version at the World Series in Boston a few years ago was far superior. largely because it tried something different.

Like it to get updates and to show support for these types of recordings (which we certainly need more of for JW's music!)

Hi everyone!
As many of you know, JW’s “Conversations” for solo piano is being released along with solo pieces written by Michael Giacchino, Alexandre Desplat, Randy Newman, Don Davis and Bruce Broughton. I recently became the manager of the facebook page for this album. If you want updates on the album, or if you want to show your support for quality recordings of JW concert works, please ‘like’ the facebook page!

I could imagine "My Friend the Brachiosaurus" having lyrics. or even the main theme. but if that were the case they probably would have made it into the final Hook score, as instrumental
