  1. Anybody know what particular piece by Mozart Bernstein is playing at 27:45? It reminds me of Munich.

Are you thinking of the national anthem of Israel- Hatikvah (The Hope)?

Wow, I had no idea that was the Israeli national anthem! Always thought it was an original JW tune. I wonder if it bears any connection to the Mozart piece?

Such an amazing forum, every once in a while you get a mindblowing post/link like this! How cool is that documentary, fantastic is an understatement.

    Thank you indy4!! :worship:

No prob, SF1_freeze! You should check out Bernstein's other videos on YouTube, he did a ton of musical education stuff.

  2. These are the ones I posted in the other thread

Another one I recently stumbled upon: this gorgeous song by Camille Saint-Saens sounds very similar to JW's "When You're Alone" from Hook. At 1:28:

Also this one from War Horse, which I think can be considered more of an homage to Vaughn Williams than a theft (like how composers have been referencing folk music for centuries). At 0:12

I'll start with a few I remember right now!

  3. The opening of JW's sinfonietta is also similar to the same part from Shostakovich's 5th.

Clearly words like "stealing" and "plagiarism" are inaccurate. Williams is of course influenced by his predecessors, same as any composer. Many musicians and composers in this forum are no doubt familiar with the experience of creating something "original," only to discover later that it was influenced by something now mostly forgotten by the conscious mind.

I'm not trying to attach any sort of judgement to these discoveries. it's just interesting to me to hear what pieces have influenced JW. it used to bother me but not anymore, now it's just fun to try and pick them out

  4. One thing that bothers me is that, since its premiere at the baseball game, the tempo has been significantly reduced in every recording. Not sure why this is the case. Maybe Williams marked the tempo slower, but for whatever reason (time shortage, or just a mistake) he conducted at a much faster tempo at the game?

  5. I am very familiar with his film work but no so much his concert pieces. Can you recommend his best concert pieces which have a higher tempo and are quite exciting to listen to?

I would avoid all the concerti and Heartwood. It sounds like you want something that is easily accessible, and while these are great, they all take some time to truly appreciate.

His easiest to digest concert works are:

    - Liberty Fanfare

    - all his Olympic pieces (there are 4 of them)

    - Fanfare for Fenway

    - For the President's Own

    - Sound the Bells!

  6. I don't think we should be looking for something "different" in an arrangement of this piece. If we get too inventive then it goes away from being something respectful or celebratory and becomes something more of an artist trying to show off - kind of like what we see with vocalists at the Super Bowl year after year. The Star-Spangled Banner shouldn't be used as a personal artistic platform to that degree, lest we start alienating the people whom the anthem really matters to.

Perhaps you're right, but as I said I think JW's version at the World Series in Boston a few years ago was far superior. largely because it tried something different.

  7. Hi everyone!

As many of you know, JW’s “Conversations” for solo piano is being released along with solo pieces written by Michael Giacchino, Alexandre Desplat, Randy Newman, Don Davis and Bruce Broughton. I recently became the manager of the facebook page for this album. If you want updates on the album, or if you want to show your support for quality recordings of JW concert works, please ‘like’ the facebook page!

    Thanks! :)
