  1. I hope it's a long tone poem, or a trombone concerto. Regardless I'm excited! I listened to the interview and somehow I missed this--thanks for starting the new thread!
  2. Erich Korngold deserves to be #1 on the random dudes list; any other placement would be silly and uninformed. Not sure about where I'd want him on the composers list.
  3. Hmmm...sounds like JW doesn't know that they're making episodes 8 and 9 for Star Wars? Or were they talking about Book Thief?
  4. That was great, thanks for sharing!
  5. I didn't know there was an unreleased music from JFK? I thought JW just wrote a few concert pieces, and let Oliver Stone edit those to fit the film?
  6. I'm curious what we think his role is. Is the heir to this legacy, as several have suggested? After all, he is bridging the gap between popular and so-called "high-brow" music, and he has a distinct association with Americana--whether that's an accurate association or not. Is the legacy itself too artificial to be true? Indeed, all three composers were very different from each other, maybe we're just fooling ourselves by making this grand oversimplification. I got to chat briefly with composer Frank Ticheli recently (most famous for his works for wind bands). Each movement in his Clarinet Concerto (wonderful piece btw) pays tribute to a different member of the group (movements are titled Rhapsody for George, Song for Aaron, Riffs for Lenny), so I asked him who he felt was the most appropriate heir to this powerful threesome. His first reaction was that there was nobody. Then he named off a few composers that I admit I had never heard of, and forget their names. I asked if he would consider JW, and he immediately dismissed him as being entirely different--not just for being primarily a film composer, but because "he takes from everybody" (he did note that JW was a nice guy). Obviously I disagree with the criticism (especially since Bernstein was just as eclectic). But I'm curious to see what others think.
  7. I can't get enough of WWS. Even if it's just a tribute piece that doesn't bring anything new to the table, I'm sure I'd eat it up. The prospect of hearing Bernstein on a big screen in itself is enticing. I'm also interested to see Spielberg's take on it...aesthetically I'm sure it'd be very different than the 61 film. Always is a remake.
  8. I would absolutely LOVE this...but please wait until John Williams has stopped composing! That is priority one for the moment.
  9. Well, if they can't spend their time watching every single film, then they shouldn't be ACademy members. "With Great power comes great responsibility." How credible would be the results really (in any category) if half of them voted? Or if half of them haven't seen the nominations and just went with the flow? The second one (about people voting without having seen the nominees) is definitely a problem, but not one that the article you posted reflects. The first one is not really a problem, especially given the alternative. You're proposing kicking out the people who don't vote to avoid lower voter turnout...but either way you're going to be reducing turnout as an absolute number (either the people will remain Academy members and won't vote, or they won't be able to because they'll be kicked out).
  10. Yeah, but at least they acknowledge the fact that they're ignorant about animation, and abstain. The Academy members are normal people with lives and families, and they can't spend all their time watching every single nominated film (let alone take the time to truly understand all the elements of the film). So the ones that don't feel informed enough don't vote. I think that's exactly what they should be doing.
  11. Lol is he British? Used the word "bloody" But I agree he seemed really energetic. Great video!

  14. It's available here: http://www.amazon.com/Nimbus-2000/dp/B000S457ZQ But just so ya know, there are rumors of an expanded Potter release coming soon, which may include "Nimbus 2000" and more (and performed by the LSO, not the city of Prague). So you might consider waiting before spending the money (althoguh its only $1)
  15. I like the skull motif. It's rhythmically very ambiguous, unlike the (admittedly superior) ark theme. But I think the best part is the hypnotic B theme.
  16. The main theme also seems like the first in a trilogy of main themes...7 Years, Angela's Ashes and now Book Thief all have some notable similarities. The first is my least favorite version, but it's still good.
  17. The best theme from SEven Years IMO is the one that opens "Leaving Ingrid." The others are good too.
  18. The Oscars are as much about entertainment as they are about awarding the best in the business...the Nobel prizes are not. That's what these are meant for--the people reading at home. I don't think this belittle JW at all.
