I believe promos will still be sent in, but they are not allowed to contain any unreleased music. This rule was made after what happened with A.I.
As for what determines the Best Score, it technically is how it goes with the film and its effectiveness. However, the Academy is biased and nominates/awards based on different criteria. A film nominated for Best Picture will get a Best Score nomination nearly every time, and will usually win.
I don't think there's a way to escape the bias, no matter what system is used. I frequently find myself loving a certain scene in a movie, and loving the music that accompanies. It's happend to many times to be a coincedence, and I always wonder: Is the music making me like the scene, or the scene making me like the music?

because it's a great score. but i do agree that some other scores listed were better.

I agree with Vaderbait 100%.No point of mentionning the UE either.Just that we want expanded AotC and RotS scores(I hesitate to even use the term "complete")
Another point is telling them were not stupid people who will rush out to buy this because of posters and various crap they might put in there. This is more at the level of the action figure collectors...although there still a lot of these people
K.M.
YES! get the complete ROTS and AOTC scores, and I will never ask for another star wars score again.

Yeah, those had to go

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and destroy every shred of decent credibility I have to REEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAALLY stretch the truth.
The argument is not that JW hasn't scored a Disney film, which he has, he has not scored a Disney cartoon.
Before you say that I'm crazy and should go away for another four years, hear me out.
All the original Star Wars films had their share of...how to say it, fake actors. That is to say, characters who were not people in costumes, nor had we reached the point of CGI wizardry, which wouldn't hit until Tron and Willow some time later. Star Wars had fabulous masks inside the cantina, but The Empire Strikes Back introduced us to Yoda, who was basically a Muppet under the control of Frank Oz. Return of the Jedi took it to all new high with the return of Yoda, but also dozens of new creatures seen in Jabba's summer home and on the Khetanna, and also Jabba himself. So many puppets made the cut for Jedi, that many consider Return of the Jedi to be the Muppet movie of the Star Wars trilogy. Muppet and Ewok movie, that's it.
A-ha, John Williams scored a Muppet movie! But weren't the Muppets purchased recently by The Walt Disney company?
John Williams scored not 1, but 2 Disney movies!
I rest my case, good night, godspeed Spiderman, and seeya later.
The Star Wars trilogy is not a merry, sing-a-long, everyone-lives-happily-ever-after, your-true-power-lies-in-your-heart type of movie, like Disney movies. That doesn't count.

Why? I mean, I could understand, him being humble and all, that he wouldn't want CoS being nominated (even though he wrote most of the music), but why the SW Prequels? And why not the third?
-
That was a close call for me...but still, JW prevailed!

My favorite non-Williams classical piece is Danse Mecabre.

Here's a link to a poll going on at tracksounds. Vote Williams!
http://www.tracksounds.com/default.htm
There are many good scores, but I chose the Last Crusade in the end.
Although, they didn't have my favorite score: PoA

Academy members simply disagreed with you and focused on Williams' Schindler's List. Which put Jurassic Park in a different perspective. The only score that Williams has withdrawn from the Academy is Chamber of Secrets.
Did he withdraw CoS because of the whole Ross thing?
-
Yes, I would prefer Williams to Hooper, but nobody else.

My first JW soundtrack was Phantom Menace OS. It opened me up into the world of music. Now, half my life is devoted to music, whether it's playing trombone or piano, or listening to it. It's also cheered me up in time I need to be.
I voted option 1.

Wow....this is the first time in a few days that this topic and "Will JW Score Potter Anymore" aren't in the top 2 consistently.

Thanks guys! I wonder why Zimmer won't send in his score??
So the members sold them illegally??I can't answer all those questions but one question I can answer...I think Academy members have to sign a waver every time they receive promo scores that I'm sure states something about that they can't make copies or sell copies, etc or they could get into really major trouble.Of course as we all know now this year there are no more promos being sent to members... -
Alright, I'm a bit confused on this topic, so I'm going to say all I know (or think I know) and please, correct me if I'm wrong:
If the composer thinks their score is good enough to be nominated for an Oscar, they burn a CD with ALL the music that was written for the film, and send it to the Academy. The Academy members listen to it, and nominated 5 or 6. The best on wins.
Now, some questions:
1. Can a score only be nominated if the promo is sent in? If the Academy hears a great score from a movie that hasn't sent a promo, the movie won't be allegable for an Oscar, right?
2. Why are some scores more availble than others? I mean, I've seen A.I. and CMIYC promo many times on eBay, but none others. Do the Academy members sell them after they're done listening to them? Do they make extra copies of certain promos?
3. fabulous scores like Jurassic Park, which deserved to be nominated, if not win, an Oscar--were they not nominated because JW never sent in a promo CD, or because the Academy Members are crazy?
4. Can the Academy be given any movie score? Even, say, movies that are never in theaters?
5. Does the Academy base their opinion on how well the score fits the movie, or how good it is to listen to, unaccompanied by the movie?
6. Are foreign film score elligable?
7. Is there a time limit on the amount of music allowed on the promo??

Actually, I'd rather see Williams' Harry Potter scores expanded than the prequels'.
Give me a complete Prisoner Of Azkaban, and I'll happily wait another 10 yeears for ROTS.
I agree. I can't belive they didn't have a note of Peter Pettigrew's theme in the OS!!
-
Hans Zimmer is a great composer, who can really add to the film. I could undertstand why some of you might not like his music, but hate it? Honestly, his riveting action pieces, and even a few beautiful pieces (love theme from world's end, this land, Chevalier de Sangreal, etc...) His style is different, but he is still a great composer. Though maybe not as good as JW, I respect Zimmer deeply, and he is one of my favorite film compsers.

Well, there is a problem with the RotJ sound quality overall,it is very muddy, but I just don't pay attention to proper instrument placement. And I just don't care the missing Sail Barge music.
ESB can stay as it is IMO
Yeah, the list was a little much. Now they think people are just bitching to bitch.
What we should be doing is concerting efforts first and foremost on complete Prequel Scores. We can always fight for better quality OT scores later on. Who knows, maybe these ones are fixed.
But the bottom line is, let's focus on the demand for the PT first, instead of yet another OT release.
EDIT: Think of it this way, would you rather have a few version of Lapti Nek or complete PT scores?
I would much prefer AotC or RotS complete score over PT complete score. If they released the proper PT score, I don't think I'd buy it, just because I've already spent so much $ on PT OS and UE, and I really don't have much of a desire for PT complete.

I am by no means insinuating that Hooper is BETTER than Williams, I just think he has talent, and is a great composer.
For only the Potter films, he would be my second choice (JW is first, of course)

Usually sticking to the Trading Posts only, I'm delving into the General Discussion forums!!
After reading some of the posts, it seems I'm the only person on this site that actually supports Zimmer and his team of composers. I can also proudly say that I physically own every single released score by a MV-RC composer, except Fools Of Fortune and New Music In Films.
Instead of me presenting specifics, I'll allow my fellow JW fans to post their opinions of Hans Zimmer and Friends.
I think Zimmer is a magnificent composer!! While not nearly as good as JW, he has talent, and many of his scores are very enjoyable to listen to. Some great cues that come to mind: Up is Down, What Shall We Die For, Drink Up Me Hearties, This Land, King of Pride Rock, Chevalier de Sangreal, Jack Sparrow, Mission Accomplished, and many more. I was curious if anybody knows how much of POTC: At World's End was written by Zimmer, and how much by his "team". Are all his scores written partially by his team?
And was John Powell, Klaus Badelt, and Gregson-Williams all Zimmer's student??
-
I don't think pointing out the mixing flaws in Empire Strikes Back and missing Laptin Nek versions in Return of the Jedi helps at all. What's the friggen obsession with Lapti Nek some people have?I've listened to this track exactly once on the 1983 OST.It's also one of the worst Williams compositions of all time .Return of the Jedi needs a complete remastering not just flipping horns around in one cue.
What we need is Attack of the clones and Revenge of the Sith expanded, that's the least they could do
Yeah, I agree. I've never been to picky when it comes to sound quality.

Seriously, though. Someone who hasn't sent an email to Sony yet should include the following:
1. a link to this conversation
2. GoodMusician's edits
3. the fact that bootlegs are floating all over eBay
On another, Star Wars related note, apparently, the Star Wars vault will contain the soundtrack to Star Tours. I haven't been on that ride in a while, and I was wondering if anyone knew if it was just re mixed music from the films, or if it was new material. I'm really excited for this book. Will there be a limited release??

We want more, Hooper!!!!!!!!

Actually, I found this link on onering.net, and it was strongly encouraging everyone to vote ROTK. I felt I should even the votes by linking this poll to a JW fansite.
