  2. ´ Mine too. But these poll choices are not very good, IMHO (too focused on "famous" scores) You want a poll with every minor theme listed? Like with 300 options? Yeah, every John Williams Theme he has ever written. That has to be done someday
  3. Look careful and you find quite some very cool hints and ideas JW incorporated the Jabba theme (which certainly isn't a major theme) in the cue (on OST) Anakin vs Sebulba. He also reworked the Emperor's theme into Augie's great municipal band Hm, and the Rebel fanfare appears in RotS during the space battle (also no major theme) ...
  4. I just accidentally found a 2002 post (posted below) which seems very interesting. We all know that the music didn't change in the dvd release. Maybe they have recorded something but didn't use it yet and wait for the blue ray release. Even if they scrapped this idea it certainly sounds as John Williams has at least thought about new music and maybe even written the new pieces he intended to record. Any new developments on that front and what are your opinions on that seemingly forgotten topic? http://www.jwfan.com/index.php?option=com_...=view&id=18 Imperial March in 'Star Wars: A New Hope'? Friday, 10 May 2002 In a recent interview published in Dutch magazine 'Score', John Williams claims Lucas has asked him to rescore parts of Episode IV to include the Imperial March, which is missing from that film. Here's an excerpt: "I am thrilled to have the chance to go back to something I composed in 1977 and be able to make the entire saga continuous theme-wise. Notably absent in the first movie is the Imperial March. Being able to insert that theme in the first movie will create a much stronger emotional flow throughout the Saga." "After the release of Episode III George will enhance the original trilogy with additional scenes and special effects, adding my adjustments to the score this will seamlesly branch the entire Star Wars Saga into one massive romantic space opera. I think something of this magnitude has never been done before." (Thanks to 'elvisjones' and TF.N for the news) New interview reveals that Williams might rescore parts of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope

  6. I read on several sites that due to a great series finale script, sci fi decided to add at least another episode to the final 10. So that makes 11 episodes of battlestar left to go (maybe some episodes will also have a longer running time but that's unconfirmed) Maybe they consider 4.20 as a two hour series finale, that would fit with the dates I'm really looking forward to the new music of Bear Mc Creary, one of the most promising new tv/film composers on the horizon. Oh, great preview of the next episodes. I just hope we get a great space battle in the end. There wasn't that much action in the last ten episodes, which isn't necessarily bad but somehow necessary in a sci fi epic like battlestar.
  7. That's a really hard poll. I mean those two Williams Soundtracks are in his top five best works ever and i LOVE both movies. Both are the best in their series (for me). But i have to vote for Empire, i'm just more Star Wars than Indy geek
  8. I'm still waiting for amazon.de! I don't know a shop in Austria who could have it earlier -.-
  9. TOD LC KotCS/ Raiders (there isn't that much difference for me) (films in same order)
  10. Interesting thread, like many of you Star Wars threw me into JW Music. In my case the prequel trilogy. To be precise "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" was my first conscious Star Wars film and also my first Star Wars film in the cinema. I remember watching RotJ sometime earlier in TV but i was to young then and i only watched the first part of it. I enjoyed TPM cause i was the right age. So it absolutely fulfilled Lucas purpose: Get a lot young new Star Wars Fans After the movie i realised that the music (much better than the film if not Star Wars would deserve from a more grown up point of view) was a big reason for me to become Star Wars Fan. So i started to watch the other films and bought my first John Williams Soundtrack: "Star Wars Episode 1". I realized then (after having watched the original trilogy) that although the music was great missed most of the original Themes. So i started looking for the original Soundtracks and luckily my mother (she knew i was into Star Wars by then) buyed me the at this time out of print 1997 Special Edition ANH CD Box, liner booklett included, in an Austrian store. That was a great christmas present and of course i wanted the other ones with the liner booklett's too and i got them from amazon shortly before they were out. I also love Steven Spielberg Films and as i realized that JW almost always does the music i started collecting, but only soundtrack's i really enjoyed in the movies. I only own a few CD's because most of the great Williams Soundtracks were not available as i became a soundtrack lover. I refuse buying too much on ebay, so i'm probably dependent on rereleases. What a lucky coincidence that with the Indiana Jones Box one of the greatest rereleases finally arrived (although i still will have to wait for my box, austria unfortunately isn't on the shipping priority list :/ ) That's a great post Wojo. I have to agree, it's probably JW's fault. His music is so good, if you let it through to your heart you get hooked
  11. Hm, not that hard Fawke's the Phoenix and A Window to the Past ( Buckbeaks Flight at third place)
  12. It's also weird that after the three JW Scores all great Williams Themes (except the Main Theme) were obmitted by Doyle and Hooper. If they just used ONE other Williams Theme it would have been enough to get a natural progression of Potter Scores. But as it stands you have the far too triumphant approach of Doyle lacking any magic and the theme lacking Hooper approach. And I know that there are themes in Hoopers scores, but they are so unmemorable that it all seems like athmospheric underscore. At least the atmosphere is a bit more magical than Doyle's approach. I don't understand the people who claim that the series is darker and therefore the magic in the scores has to dissapear. A great composer can unite that, as Williams has proven especially in PoA. I'm sure Hoopers Score would be regarded a lot better if he used "A Window through the Past" in the Sirius scenes instead of his non thematic underscore. This small change would have been enough for connectivity but obviously he is too proud to use other composer's music. That's probably why he is a television composer, he doesn't understand composing for cinema and for an ongoing franchise. Maybe he got some feedback from the Potter fans and does a better Job in the next film...
  13. What exactly are you looking for? Goldsmith scores that are masterpieces, regardless of the type? or Goldsmith scores with strong themes? Your recommendation focuses on two very melodic tracks; to someone who does not know the score, I would also recommend "Vjur Flyover", "The Cloud" or "The Meld". Alien has already been mentioned; it is as inventive as Star Trek-- The Motion Picture and Planet of the Apes, but "easier" than the latter. Legend bridges the genres with its atmospheric opening and beautiful themes. "The Enteprise" is one of his very best tracks (a great theme, an exciting crescendo from quiet to stately). In the "grand theme" category, another score would be Lionheart; the theme is just as bood and noble as "The Enterprise", and there are several other nice themes and tracks ("The Dress", "The Lake"). Medicine Man has the great "The Trees", plus several very nice tracks ("Rae's Arrival", "The Harvest", "The Sugar", ...). Powder has a very beautiful theme, which is introduced is a delicate way; it builds up to an emotionally powerful crescendo in the finale-- and everything inbetween is really very very good. Basic Instinct is a ST:TMP of the nineties in terms of quality; it has a great theme, and what is mostly suspense music (just like ST:TMP was mostly atmospheric) is made very interesting. "Pillow Talk" is a wonderful track of the same quality as "The Enterprise", just in another way; the movie might have gotten a cliché or seedy score; Goldsmith gave it a perfect one, that oozes sensusality and sultriness without being vulgar, which accompanies and heightens the visuals and the tension in a very effective way. In fact i'm looking for both and i think so far i got a lot of good recommendations. But usually i need thematic material in a soundtrack to call it a masterpiece (There are exceptions, but they are quite rare). The reason is that i think as a listener or viewer you need a musical identity which is mostly created by themes developed throughout the movie. That provides the pleasure for the listener to hear new arrangements and orchestrations of the same theme over and over again ( if a theme is good and long enough). Perfect example is the Star Wars Force theme for me. As you know it is used in all Star Wars movies and it is played in lots of different moods and situations. This is the most developed Star Wars theme and i think a perfect example what you can do with a theme just by new arrangements. Check out: Episode IV hopeful and sentimental version: Dawn at the Lar's Farm mystic version: Scene in Obi Wans hood on Tattooine epic coronation version: Throneroom celebration Episode V longer mystic version: End of TESB Episode VI epic dramatic version: Death of the Emperor epic sad version: Burning of Vader Episode I sad and sentimental version: Anakin's Goodbye sad version: Mix of Force Theme with Funeral March Episode II epic departing version: departing coruscant epic battle version: Gunship at Battle of Geonosis Episode III militaristic epic battle version: Start of Episode 3 militaristic lush approaching version: Going to Utapau epic dramatic choral version: Battle of the Heroes Once again hopeful and sentimental version: Ending of Episode3 That's of course just a small overview and maybe you can add additional versions, but i think you get what i mean
  14. I recently listened to the Star Trek THE MOTION PICTURE Soundtrack and it holds everything promised by a lot of sources. It is easily the best of the Goldsmith Star Trek scores (I don't know the others not by Goldsmith). I would consider myself a Star Wars fan and so Star Trek is like enemy territory but this soundtrack is worth forgetting about that one time I'm sure most of you know that soundtrack but for those who didn't get the pleasure i have some recommendations. The two absolutly outstanding tracks are "The Enterprise" and "Illia's Theme" "The Enterprise" offers you the most amazing variations and arrangements of the widly known Star Trek Theme. Goldsmith didn't want or was not able to go back to that in the later Star Trek films scored by him. Best moment by far is 3:15-3:50. Here the Theme is played in the most powerful and complete way ever. This truly gives goosebumbs especially if listened with good sound equipment. "Illia's Theme" is a wonderful and lush secondary theme in the film and has the spirit of a love theme. The outstanding thing here isn't just it's beauty, it's the wonderful incorporation of the main theme into Illia's theme. I'm no Jerry Goldsmith expert, but i'm asking you if Goldsmith ever surpassed the skill and the success of the "Star Trek Motion Picture" and which scores by him play in the same league or is this the best film score he ever composed?
  15. In fact you can feel some of the spirit of Kotor2 in the Force Unleashed Promo. Regarding the Kotor 2 Soundtrack: I agree that it is very good in the game and a lot of the cues are worth listening to. But there is also the other side of the medal. Especially the action cues sound very similar, no matter what planet you are and you can always criticize the lack of known star wars themes or different arrangements of at least the force theme. But overall the soundtrack is an astonishing achievement for a video game score (the same is the case for Kotor 1) The Force Unleashed Soundtrack also seems to be on that road. Especially the love theme gave me goosebumps although it's obviously inspired by Leia's Theme. It is safe to say that in that promo we only heared a bit of the new thematic material. The focus was more on action cues. So i'm looking forward to lots of thematic variations, especially in the cut scenes of the game. There has to be a fair amount of it. They wouldnt use motion capture with real actors just for 5 min of cinematic material. Some Speculation (may contain game spoilers!):
  16. The prequels (to be accurate Episode 1) made me a Star Wars Fan and in that process a JW Fan. So SW Ep1 is a very special movie for me although now that i'm grown up i also see its shortcomings. But it doesn't bother me that much. I saw the original trilogy after episode 1. I consider AOTC better than Episode 1 and ROTS better than ROTJ and on par with ANH. The best Star Wars Movie still is TESB AOTC is a very interesting film with some extremely great scenes (The WHOLE Coruscant at Night Blade Runner Feel, Kamino, Geonosis Battle, Space Fight,...) mixed with awful and bad acted poo (love story, nightmare, death of Anakin's mother). Overall still a good film for me. ROTS was great in every aspect. It successfully filled the gap between the Prequels and the original trilogy making it for me even better than ROTJ and equally god than ANH.
  17. Hedwig's Theme Monica's Theme Fawkes the Phoenix Duel of the Fates Across the Stars In no specific order
  18. 1) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 2) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 3) Star Wars Episode 3: The Revenge of the Sith Honorable Mentions: AI Artificial Intelligence Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Catch me if you Can
  19. 1. The Departure 2. Journey to Akator 3. Finale 4. The Adventures of Mutt 5. Temple ruins and the secret revealed In the Depature from 1:15 till the end you get Williams at his absolutely best. This is the best part of the soundtrack for me. I can hear it over and over again, it's absolut terrific!!!
  20. I will too share some thoughts and my opinion on the score with you. In fact i'm absolutely positively suprised and for me this new Indy score is another masterpiece by our Johnny Williams. He surpasses many of his 2000`s scores. It's hard to compare between the Indiana Jones scores so far, as they are all great in their own way. But JW also managed to create a new style for this soundtrack and it should be greatly appreciated. It certainly works better that way than just going straight into his 80s style. Don't forget that every Indy film differs in tone, style, places and characters and JW hast to capture that in his soundtrack. Usually the soundtrack gets it full life after having seen the movie but even now after the first listenings i absolutely enjoy approximately 80% of it. Only some mysterious tracks like "return" don't do it for me. My favourite new theme is MUTT'S THEME which catches a lot of LC flair and i'm sure it suits the character perfectly. I'm glad about the mexican/peruan music which keeps the tradition of every Indy film to hear some source music out of the countries that are visited. That also helps to create a unique flair in each soundtrack. I have to admit that Jungle chase lacks a bit of focus but gets truly overwhelming in its second half. Other parts i freaked out over are "The Spell of the skull" 3:10 till end, "The Depature" 1:16 till end, the new Marion arrangement in the finale and the end of the finale, the quotation of Gaudeamus Igitur in "A whirl through academy" and the whole "Temple ruins and the secret revealed" Now all i have to say is let's enjoy the movie and hope for good unreleased cues
  21. That's true, maybe they skipped a part. I really like the use of the crystal theme in Temple Ruins and the Secret Revealed, here we get the fully orchestrated version.
  22. Yes they start 10 sec later as the amazon clips and so show 10 seconds of new music in each clip. Check out Journey to Akator, in the last 4 seconds there is some Mexican/Peruan Music which sounds great
  23. Check it out at http://www.exlibris.ch/musik/Film_Soundtra...8807230856.aspx
  24. I'm definitly impressed by the samples. My favourite so far is Adventures of Mutt (It appears that this great theme even has a funny b-theme at the end of the sample)
