  1. Hey folks. This question's probably been asked a million times, but...

What is the most comprehensive interview or article or series of articles or essay or (god willing) portion of a book in which Williams discusses his creation of the original SW scores and his musical influences and his themes and any backstage stories about the scoring process? I have the 1997 Special Edition albums, and their linear notes are great, but all this talk of the new SW films and who will score has me going back to the original scores again and wanting more of this sort of literature.

    Any helpful thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks.

I like having a projector, because as as someone who doesn't own a TV, and who cherishes the big screen experience, it makes watching movies an experience, like others have mentioned. And only being able to watch films on a projector means I don't watch TV which - no judgement here against anyone else - is a good thing for me.

Projectors and PS3s are an ideal combination for another reason: you can take any bittorent files downloaded on your computer (TV shows, Bluray rips), put them on a USB stick and transfer them to the PS3 - and get incredible picture quality.

Thinking of upgrading to the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8350 some time in the next year.

  4. I've listened to all the clips at Barnes and Noble again, and I am positive that Disc 2 (not counting the two bonus tracks) ends at the close of "The Last Recruit," meaning that whatever final release comes out, it will include coverage of not only "Across the Sea," "What They Died For," and "The End," but also "The Candidate." Here's why:

Tracks 21 and 22 are trekking music during "The Last Recruit," when the group splits up. The track "Kool-Air Claire," for instance, plays when Sawyer and Kate swim fully clothed to Elizabeth and the action then cuts to Jack and Hurley sneaking away from Locke's group, without Claire.

Track 23, "Sunny Outlook," is the short cue that plays during the sideways scene (also in the episode "The Last Recruit") when Sun wakes up in the hospital with Jin at her beside, and Jin tells her the baby is fine. If you listen to the clip, towards the end, the music underscoring Jin and Sun's brief dialogue exchange then segues into the theme-less sideways "Twilight Zone" sound as the camera pans to the hallway and Jack and his sideways son walking down the hallway.

The clip from Track 24, "Reunion and Reneging," starts out with some suspenseful Widmore Danger Geek Squad music as Kate, Sawyer, Sun, Hurley and Claire arrive on the shore of Hydra island. Then you can totally tell from the clip that the music is building towards the beautiful rendition of the Sun and Jin theme that played during their long-overdue reunion.

The Bonus tracks are from the finale, as has already been established, which leaves no music from "The Candidate".

Which is GREAT NEWS, in my opinion, as it gives Varese more impetus to make the final release another two-disc CD and give "The Candidate" - which featured a lot of great music - more disc space.

Think about it. "The Candidate" has the music scoring:

-- the Sub Group's shootout on the sub dock

-- the incredible, long sequence that spans Jack and Sawyer's tinkering with the bomb, Sayid's sacrifice, the flooding of the sub, and the death of Sun and Jin. This sequence is among the most extended of any action set piece in the show's history, and none of the tracks on the latter part of Disc 2 come anywhere close to covering its entering length. Varese would be foolish not to include it, with its heroic rendition of Giacchino's Medal of Honour sub theme and the life and death theme played over the montage of the sunken sub.

-- the emotional rendition of Locke's sideways theme during his and Jack's final interaction in the hospital highway, when Locke still refuses Jack's surgery

    Thoughts?

"Sunny Outlook" is Sideways Sun waking up in the hospital in "The Last Recruit," and "Reunion and Reneging" is their reunion on the beach from the end of that episode. The B&N sample includes the beginning of their theme from the beach scene.

Which means that aside from the two bonus tracks from the finale, the set leaves off the last four episodes...though I don't remember if there was much worthwhile music in "The Candidate" (I found the Life & Death reprise for Jin & Sun disappointingly bog-standard, especially considering the gorgeous combination of Life & Death and Jin/Sun's theme from season four) and I think "What They Died For" just had the one standout track with the culmination of Agent Desmond's theme. Oh! There's also the prison break scene from "The Candidate," with some nice actiony variations on one of Smocke's themes, and more of the O6 theme as they're leaving the sub.

The Theory page attached to the CD page on Lostpedia has the list of episodes and scenes for each track, and someone's started making track-title pages today based on the samples. It should all get merged together on the main CD page next week after the official release. It's amazing how quickly that thing gets updated sometimes.

Sorry glennwbutler. I literally must have wrote my last post as you were writing yours.

  5. What a weird release. I hope the demand and impetus for releasing Lost paraphenalia doesn't fall away (once the DVD and soundtrack have been release and hit peak sales), otherwise we may not see another release. Here's hoping for those crucial episode track releases, along with The Moth from season 1! I'll register my interest in such a prospective release by actually buying this Lost soundtrack, as I have all previous ones (the same can't be said by me for most scores these days).

I'm incredibly happy with what we're getting.

When you put it into perspective, we are the most spoiled niche audience in the world. I mean honestly, not a lot of other shows have generated one soundtrack per season like Lost has. I'm betting it's thanks to Lost that we are now seeing other programs (like True Blood) get season-specific releases.

The fact that we're even talking about a two-disc score release for the sixth season of a network television program is amazing in itself. Bask in it.

  6. Fascinating...I wonder if we will see yet another release. Heck, I'd buy it, too. :P

Personnally, I'll wait. I've still never bought a LOST soundtrack, because I though the first two seasons soundtracks didn't have enough interesting cues to be worth it (although I love Credit Where Credit Is Due, Life & Death and some others. But it was only with season 3 that I really got interested in LOST music, and since at the end of season 3, we knew that LOST will only continue for three more seasons, I thought I'd wait a big LOST : 'Jacob Loves You' box to be released. So, I'm hoping the wait will be rewarded !

That's very...patient...of you. I don't think any of us share your force of will!

So, if I'm living in Canada, do you think the CD will arrive more quickly if I preorder from Amazon as opposed to Varese's site?

    25. The Hole Shabang (7:02)

    26. Moving On (7:54

Are they stopping at The Candidate, only putting in a couple tracks from the final three episodes ("Moving On" being the final eight minutes of the finale, of course) and planning on releasing a CD devoted to the last three episodes later on? Debate.

  8. Context is key with LOST, you're right. And after giving the album a second chance, I feel less disappointed by it - there's certainly a lot of sweet material in there, in the form of new themes and adaptations of old ones. And heck, at least Sawyer's theme finally made it onto a CD...if in the briefest way imaginable! :)

    Incanus!

Thanks for figuring that cue out. On the day of the I-tunes release, I actually went track by track, listening to the track and then listening to it in the episode itself. For almost all the cues, I knew where to look, with the exeception of this one. I was so convinced it was played in the sequence with Ben under the temple wall, and when it wasn't, I gave up in anger! So thanks for confirming that. I can rest easy now.

  9. Someone on Lostpedia has started to note which episode each Season 5 OST track belongs to:

    http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Lost_Season_5_%28Original_Television_Soundtrack%29#Track_list

I'm fairly sure "Locke's Excellent Adventure" is from "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham", when Locke turns the donkey wheel then wakes up Tunisia and is picked up by Widmore's men.

This I-tunes release couldn't have come at a better time - had the day off from work today, and was not expecting this. What a lovely surprise!

As for the album itself, it's awesome. In terms of new themes, we've got Sawyer and Juliet's love theme, Miles' theme, the sub motif, Faraday and Charlotte's love theme, Jacob's theme, the destiny theme from "The Incident," a sort of Dharma theme during "Dharma delinquent" that has often been used this season during scenes involving Widmore's people.

Plus some great iterations of Ben's theme (especially in "Jacob's Stabber"), lots of Locke material in the first half of the album, finally Sawyer's theme (which briefly but gloriously caps off "Dharma Delinquent") and the Ajira takeoff and landing music.

In terms of new things I picked up on, while I had noticed the ascending and descending motif that follows Ben's theme in "Making Up for Lost Time" when the episode first aired, I had never noticed that that motif - which seems to play during scenes having to do with time displacement or time travelling - appears several other times in the season, most notably in the track called "Your Kharma Hit My Dharma."

Also, the Man in Black theme (really just a darker, slower variation of a section of Locke's original theme) makes its first appearance in season 5, not season 6, in the episode and track "Follow the Leader." Hadn't rewatched that episode since viewing season 6, so never noticed, but very cool.

All in all, a great addition the Lost soundtrack canon, though deciding to go with the digital download over the album was a hard decision, as I did still consider myself a diehard who enjoys having the physical album. I will eventually buy it, but being in Canada - and juding by the delay in getting my Fringe soundtrack from Amazon - I wouldn't have received the physical Lost album in the email until a week before the finale. But I wanted to have the album as early as possible. Only human.

  10. Hi all.

Seeking advice from those more knowledgeable than me.

I have owned the RCA double-disc releases of the original trilogy that were released in tandem with the films during the theatrical "Special Edition" re-release - probably my most played discs.

Despite being careful, I've somehow managed to scratch one of the discs, which promped me to think about the more recent SONY release.

I'm wondering, is there significantly improved audio quality between the RCA release and the SONY release? Not that it will persuade me to but the SONY set - I'm already pretty much certain I will - but it would be nice to know.

    Thanks.

  11. For what it's worth, here are my guesses for the season 5 soundtrack:

    1. Making Up For Lost Time (3:23)

The opening of "Because You Left," when Faraday travels to the pit of the Orchid.

    2. The Swinging Bendulum (5:43)

Very good bet this is the score to the final moments of "The Lie," when Ben visits Eloise and we get that first rendition of

"Eloise's Theme" (very happy to know that will be on the album)

Starts with a nice rendition of Hurley's serious theme, heard on the season two soundtrack title "Mess it All Up."

    3. Locke’s Excellent Adventure (4:01)

Probably from "Jughead", but not sure what scene. Perhaps when Locke descends the slope to visit Richard and the 1950s hostiles at

    their camp.

This may also be from "The Little Prince," when Locke and co. see the light from the night the hatch lit up, and Sawyer spies Kate

delivering Aaron, with the Lafleur theme playing (by Lafleur theme, I'm referring to the music that's been referred to by others

as the Sawyer and Juliet love theme. It makes its first appearance in this scene.)

    4. The Science Of Faith (2:19)

No idea. But I hope it's the music from "This Place is Death," when Locke and co. leave Charlotte and Faraday in search of The

Orchid, with that nice version of the wandering theme on harp.

    5. More Locke Than Locke (3:13)

Maybe from "316", when Jacks puts his father's shoes on Locke. Or from "Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham," when Hector leads

Flocke through the Darhma barracks and they come accross Ben = "the man who killed me."

    6. Together Or Not Together (4:02)

The only thing I can think of is Eloise's lecture about the workings of the lamp post at the beginning of "316." Which would be

fine with me - Eloise's theme is one of my favourites.

Normally cues are in chronological order, but I rememberDarlton saying on the podcast that "316" and "Life and Death" were very

much meant to be viewed as one piece, with the order not mattering.

    7. Through The Window (2:07)

I'm betting this is from "316", when the Ajira flight takes off and we get a slightly different version of the Oceanic Six theme.

    8. Dharma Delinquent (1:51)

The opening of "Lafleur", with Horace drunk and disorderly and Sawyer, the new sheriff in town, forced to deal with him. This

music, I now realize, is usually associated with Dharma activity. In the current season, it's the same music that played in

"Recon" when sawyer is led by Zoe and co. to the sub as Widemore's people erect the barriers.

    9. La Fleur (2:36)

The end scene of "LaFleur", with Sawyer and Juliet embracing in their kitchen.

    10. Crash And Yearn (2:28)

Maybe from "Namaste", when Sawyer gives Jack, Kate and Hurley their clothes and alibi.

    11. Your Kharma Hit My Dharma (2:05)

This is either Sayid shooting young Ben from "He's Our You" or from "Whatever Happened, Happened," when Sawyer and Kate take young Ben to the hostiles, with a nice combination of Ben's theme and the wandering theme, followed by a heroic playing of Sayer's theme.

    12. Alex In Chains (1:35)

Ben's encounter with Alex beneath the temple wall in "Dead is Dead," with that truly epic, very Raiders rendition of Ben's theme.

    13. I Hear Dead People (1:52)

Miles listening to dead people from "Some Like it Hoth"

    14. For Love Of The Dame (3:17)

From "The Variable", starting with Faraday and Charlotte's theme (or is it simply Faraday's theme?), playing when Faradays tells young Charlotte to leave the island, then moving into the action cue during the shootout with Radzinsky and his goons.

    15. Follow The Leader (7:50)

This is, I think, one of the longest cues on a Lost soundtrack ever. I think it will cover a lot of ground from the episode, including a reprisal of the Crocodile Locke theme that pays when Locke delivers the boar the Richard's beachside camp.

    16. Sawyer Jones And The Temple Of Boom (5:14)

From "Follow the Leader." Sawyer and Juliet talk on the sub as it leaves (complete with sub theme), and Jack and co. uncover the hydrogen bomb, with destiny theme.

    17. The Tangled Web (1:41)

The opening of "The Incident" - Jacob's theme.

    18. Dharma Disaster (5:17)

    ????

    19. Blessings And Bombs (1:30)

    ????

    20. Jack’s Swan Song (1:15)

Perhaps that great rendition of the destiny theme combined with the castaway theme as Jack storms away from Sawyer defiantly, prepared to follow through on his

    plan.

    21. Dharma vs. Lostaways (4:23)

    22. The Incident (3:07)

Action music from the bomb dropping and shootout that precedes it.

    23. Jacob’s Stabber (7:32)

There's no doubt as to what this is.
