Mr Keith Hicks reacted to Holko in John Barry - MOONRAKER - New Expanded and Remastered 2-CD from La-La Land Records
    Uhhh.

    Wow.

I don't even know where to start.
Last night I finally listened to the rest of it after hyping myself up to it all week with the song and a few OST listens.

Could just be temporary, could just be my mood this week, but... first impression was that this is now easily my favourite Bond score of the ones I own/know, and one of my favourite scores of all time. Somehow it all just clicked perfectly. I'm so damn happy.

What the hell did Barry see in this? How did he suddenly completely transcend the movie and the established sound so incredibly when from the previous and next few Bond scores of his it sounds like he was done with it and sick of it all? How?

The song is great and all the uses of it throughout are lovely. The action is cool, and even all the tense/underscorey cues are engaging. Barry can be repetitive and meandering at times, but not here! Something about it, the sound, the orchestration, the melody, the unresolved progression just grabs you about them. Love the silly intermission in the middle with Tchaikovsky, Bernstein and 60s Barry. And then the pyramid/space stuff... holy crap. Total exhilirating heavenly beauty. And then it even has "ethnic" source music!!! Not even just a throwaway minute or two!!! And it's great!!! And so many versions of the song! And all of them so different, not just bullshit nondifferences, all of them worth keeping!!! The early lyrics sounded weird and maybe old-fashioned until I read that they were written for Frank Sinatra, then it instantly clicked into place, makes complete sense when thinking of it as a Sinatra song.

The orchestration is rich, the orchestra is wonderful, the sound is wonderful. Round 2 tonight with my adjusted program:

For the title song, two things bothered me: Bassey starts the first line a little bit late, and the ending is a bit quick. So I addressed both with AI separation, moved the first line a bit ahead and extended the ending by looping the instruments and putting the strings from the opening under it, only afterwards realising that this is pretty much what the early lyric version does too.

Used the alternate mix for Funeral Barge / Venice Boat Chase for the extra mandolin.

I didn't love the transition between Intro to End Title or the extra synth noodling through the song, so I put the thankfully separately included Intro at the end of Globes Destroyed and used the OST version of End Title instead.

Also reordered the songs to frame the source music program better. Moved Early Lyrics first for an energetic start and Instrumental late (since it's the early lyric version's instrumental, wouldn't work next to it), moved Alternate Instrumental early in its place instead since it's very different from Early Lyrics.

Moonraker was the first orchestral film score I ever owned. A dubbed tape of the CD from a friend.

Neil has produced another stunning album!

I'll be happy if there's a JW score and a John Barry Bond that hasn't previously had a complete release.
Having a John Barry score would also mean that we can expect further Bond releases from that era in future.

The Moonraker myth started when the expanded CDs came out in 2003 and Lukas addressed the question of why Moonraker wasn't included.
Basically tapes for Moonraker were not stored with the other tapes they were working with and there was no budget to go looking. Besides, the 5 scores to be expanded had already been determined.
It got misquoted into the Moonraker tapes being lost and that became urban myth.
People even started saying the tapes had been dumped by Davout, the Paris studio where Moonraker was recorded.
However, these myths were based on a number of false presuppositions.
First, for a major movie like Moonraker there is never just one set of tapes. There's just too much riding on it. It's very likely that both a master and backup copy were taken at the recording session, and then there may be other duplicates created for other purposes.
Second, in order to get music into a film's soundtrack, you have to do more than just record it. You have to dub it. The dubbing happened in England. Jon's book The Music of James Bond confirms tapes were shipped to England for this purpose. There would have been no reason to send them back to Paris, since Davout is a recording facility, not a storage facility.
Now, of course none of this proves the opposite, that there are accessible tapes, but several people who would know have assured us there are Moonraker tapes and they have been preserved digitally.
So, basically, a misquotation plus some false assumptions and Chinese whispers equals urban myth.

The Moonraker myth started when the expanded CDs came out in 2003 and Lukas addressed the question of why Moonraker wasn't included.
