Haha, it'll be a nice pick-me-up after the main title from The Secret Ways.

This was the extended concert version that has been around since Williams prepared the Star Wars suite in 1977.  It's been recorded MANY times... by Mehta, Gerhardt, Kunzel, Dudamel, and JW himself, among several others.

I love it!  The main theme strikes me as one of the longest-lined melodies in any Williams overture.  It just goes and goes and goes.  The theme would certainly be catchier if it were shorter, but if you ask me, that's one of the characteristics that marks it as a more "mature" entry in his oeuvre: it's more concerned with doing musically interesting things than with giving us an earworm to latch onto—although thankfully, it's not fixated on virtuosity like many of his brass pieces.  The full orchestra is on display here.  The textures are fantastic, really evoking an idealized vision of Hollywood.  (This would have been a perfect piece for the entrance plaza loop at the Disney-MGM Studios back in the late '80s/early '90s.)

Overall, I wouldn't class this with the very best of his Olympic music and other fanfares, but it's up there, especially among his recent concert works.  What a joy to have this land in our laps!

If you only knew how often this exact reference gets made in my family on a myriad of topics.  Frasier will never be topped.

Not that anything is more important than acknowledging a Frasier reference, but...

1.) Overture to the Oscars is great!  It doesn't reach the commanding heights of catchiness of much of his previous pops concert music, but it just brims with movie magic and glitz.  I love the sound of the opening!

2.) Can any old peon listen to the Sunday broadcast online, or is this geographically limited?

Always SW with these videos.  Give me the Overture or Give Me Death.

On second thought, I guess I am okay with the other videos as well.

You can easily buy the entire concert on Blu ray.

Like many of you, I am delighted with this violin concerto. So lively, so full of ideas, so unpredictable. Beautifully constructed. I think the references to 'Moonlight' in the second and fourth movement are not accidental, although ... since Williams once forgot that he wrote 'Han Solo and The Princess', and now doesn't remember which movie 'Across the Stars' comes from, he may have composed a similar theme by accident. Especially since 'Moonlight' has a different melody than 'Theme' from 'Sabrina'.

Just want to add my continued adulation for this podcast.  You guys are one of the best.

And it sounds like Ramin Djawadi has even more 'splaining to do at 6:01 in the Sibelius concerto.  It's a dangerous business, writing franchise "themes" that are only five notes long.  You never know where they might have turned up before...

Track 1: main theme all throughout, with Baschet "noises" intruding regularly and stopping it.
Track 2: completely unmelodic, Baschet sounds.
Track 3: lovely main theme, with strings eventually growing madder and madder and taking over, nothing worse than in CE3K or something.
Track 4. unmelodic again, more Baschet and some grunts.
Track 5: unmelodic strings, reminiscent of similar atonal segments in other JW scores.
Track 6: the maddest grunty Baschet and strings track.
Track 7: pretty much unmelodic again
Track 8: the most purely melodic track
    Track 9: Baschet, shakuhachi, unmelodic
Track 10: Baschet, strings, grunts, the end is melodic but not the main theme.
Track 11: unmelodic strings and shakuhachi, then the main theme comes back.

Sorry, it seems like it's just not for you.

OK, real talk, J-Dubbers: I'm enchanted by the main theme of this film (and the prospect of filling another gap in my "John Williams: One of Each" playlist), but the percussion, grunts, and atonal madness are totally worthless to me.  (I'm a teacher who mainly listens to film music while grading papers; I don't come here to add insanity to my life.)  How much tonal/melodic material does this release provide without requiring special edits?  I'm listening to CosmicApe2's series of YouTube playlists, and I love the variations on the main theme, but it seems like the weirdness intrudes somewhat frequently, and the track delineations aren't marked.  Is this worth my money?  Can anyone who bought a copy weigh in on the ratio of tracks that sound like Williams and tracks that sound like a constipated pervert caning a rocking horse in an empty gymnasium?

Should I buy it or just wait for City Light or the FSO to record the main theme?
