JWfan has never come up. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to ask him about it...

That’s awesome! I don’t know if you heard, but I know a good, little heard anecdote for you to include about Schindler’s List and dead composers…

I'm not going to lie—I was excitedly curious how quickly this news would hit JWFan!

For those who don't know me, I've been writing about film music and interviewing composers (and directors and actors) professionally for the past decade. Besides the many liner notes, I also write articles and create radio stories for mainstream news outlets like the L.A. Times and NPR. I teach a film music history course at USC. And I've been a card-carrying member of this site since 2003.

I won't divulge too much just yet, because it's still a little early, but I was excited to finally make it public that this book is happening. I've been working on it for three years now, and I've interviewed approximately 150 people. The big kahuna, of course, is John Williams. I plan to share the story of how that happened one day, but not yet.

Thanks for your excitement! I can promise you that there are many things (stories, facts, quotes) in this book you have never heard...

This is sensational news! Arguably a bigger deal than the Bouzereau documentary.

I love the description: Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, A.I. and BotFoJ. Yep, that’s pretty much the big five.

Apparently Tim Greiving has just announced the first English biography on John Williams, to be released in 2025:

If that happens with my order to Portugal I'll be most surely requesting a tax refund. In my book that is called stealing.

As for the album bring widely available... What about the folks who don't stream or buy digital music? Certainly someone in there should know the target demographics... People over 50 and film music fans are still very much tied to phisical media. At least I am.

I think what people miss in these stories is that it’s highly frowned upon in the film industry to speak out against major figures like this. You get blacklisted. Her career would certainly be harmed by this. People saying she is doing it for fame are deeply, deeply detached from reality. She would have no such motive.

If you are outright dismissing the possibility that she might be telling the truth based on nothing except the desire to avoid the cognitive dissonance of an artist you like potentially being a piece of shit, then ya brain broke.

A very arcane detail, but something about the sound of the Archimedes theme at 1:24 in "Centuries join hands" intrigues me - it appears to be a horn(s) line with added flute octave and harp accents, but something about it sounds more noble/open/round than other comparable passages... I'm curious if that might be wagner tuba instead, or just quietly doubled by trombone (?)

(Generally after more repeated listens this score reveals more and more intricate details, especially in the less "obvious" places... a real gem)

I saw it in 70mm IMAX - as intended.

I found the score distracting and too loud in the film. It was nearly constant, blaring loudly and drowning out dialog.

I could discern some some variation in the music but it seemed largely same-y.

    Not impressed.

Also, was Danny Elfman's lawyer drunk when representing him? Did he actually let Elfman release this statement?

"Ms. Abadi’s allegations are simply not true. I allowed someone to get close to me without knowing that I was her ‘childhood crush’ and that her intention was to break up my marriage and replace my wife."

He sent her a cup of what looked to be semen with a line "to pique your imagination," and then said this? If anything, this is the kind of self-important attitude that makes him look guilty.

Man, what a dreadful and troubling thing to have to read about my second favorite film composer. This cannot end well for Elfman. If the allegations are true in their entirety, we have just witnessed the end of his career. He’ll then join the growing crowd of talented men fallen from grace whose achievements will forever be interpreted in conjunction with their moral failings and abusive actions. If the allegations are false, he’ll still get dragged through the mud until the courts declare him innocent.

Abadi’s detailed accusations, coupled with the hush money agreement and her founding of an awareness and victim support group, make me inclined to believe her. I’m still processing what this means for my relationship with Elfman’s music.

What I don’t understand is why he didn’t maintain payments and spare what could well be the ruination of an incredible career. More importantly, what on earth possessed him to do these offensive acts in the first place?

All this makes me wonder, what other currently respectable artists/celebrities/public figures are one NDA breach from being destroyed in the public eye?
