  1. 4.5

Out of Star Wars scores, it would only get a 4, but total, I can up it .5.

Certainly an excellent album, with two awesome themes: Luke's (Main Titles) and Lea's. My two problems are, #1 - All of the Tatooine music, really ends up boring me, and #2 the recording quality sounds pinnched and tight, like it was recorded in a small room with not very good equipment, and the result is that the loud exciting parts often hurt the ears.

Of course, it started it all, so it gets a little extra credit there.

But how 'bout this to stir up controversy: Second worst Star Wars score (with the worst being Attack of the Clones).

  2. Ok, I am officially out of my mind excited.

I don't have any of the old Indy soundtracks, so I just listen to the on youtube every once in a while, and survive the quality until they rerelease them. So where is the map room quote on the new soundtrack clips?

  3. It could be that we all just don't like black gospel music

please o please explain this comment :)

Someone asked why so many people around here don't like Hercules. That seemed like the best explanation, because (and I am not an authority on the subject) it seems to me that the music in Hercules is perhaps better then much black gospel music I have heard. I just don't choose to listen to it much, because that is not a style I appreciate. It doesn't mean it is a bad style, it is just not one I choose to listen to a great deal. Thus, many members here do not like Hercules.

  4. I thought I had heard somewhere that Robin Williams did the voice of the narrator at the beginning of Aladdin, but IMDB says "Bruce Adler... Narrator / Merchant (singing voice)". Does this mean that Robin Williams only did the speaking voice, or did he not have anything to do with the narrator? Thanks.

  5. Thanks. The only real reason that I called it 'Story' was because: #1 the melody that is played 3 times at the beginning and 3 times with variations at the end kept on sounding like the storyteller at the beginning and end, and acting as a bookend that way, and, #2 I couldn't come up with any better titles

So the story itself is very undefined. It begins with melancholy and depression, moves into a type of march using the chase motive from later, but it is more lighthearted, with lighter textures and the piccolo especially making it lighter. This is a sort of way of moving past the depressed feeling. As if another character has entered and created a spark of adventure. Soon danger takes over, and the chase then begins. After the danger motive is used to switch from the diminshed 7nth chords to major tonic key of C that I started in, I use the trumpet to reprise the storyteller theme.

Something like that. But I have always had a hard time defining my music.

  6. Here is a piece I have written. The mix is not completely finnished, but I would love to get your thoughts on it. I have been trying to get professional opinions on it, but thought it might be a good idea to get some views from a purely listening music fan's prespective (and, of course, any professionals here are welcome to comment). And don't be nice; I want to know what you really think.

For now, the title is "The Story". I have never been good at titles.

Just after posting I realized that I needed to tweak the last few seconds a little. So here is the new but only slightly different version:

  7. Perfect is just a meaningless term in describing film. It is a pointless word, one that does not impart anything to me other than that a person is head-over-heels in love with a given film. Nothing to do with quality. It is just as subjective as anything else, and one that is hard for me to take seriously because of it's extreme nature. Great is a good enough word for me. So many possibilites there, so many conversations to be had....someone tells me a film is perfect, I know I'm not going to be able to have a rational conversation with the man about the film, even if I loved it. On the other hand, someone tells me a film is great.....there are so many different ways a film can be great, so many different reasons, so many thoughts and elements gone into the film impressing the person. If there is such a thing, I find it a very personal thing, and one that is cheapened by the word 'perfect'.

Great post. Maybe even perfect.

  8. Shortest track (that can count for a song): "Will Power" by dc Talk 0:14

Longest track: "Faust" by Franz Liszt 31:41

Most played doesn't really count for me, because I have a tendency to erase the play count on tracks that I don't want to be as high as they are. And a couple of months ago I accidentally erased all plays from every track. Having said that, "Journey to the Island" by John Williams, 33 plays.

  9. I just thought it would be interesting to find out the total number of tracks people had on iTunes, or Windows Media Player, or whatever you use to play your music on your computer.

At the moment, my number is: 2,787 tracks, takes up 12.54 GB of space, and would take 8 days, 15 hours, 47 minutes and 37 seconds to play through th whole thing.

I'm sure most folks around here have much more impressive numbers. Care to share?

  10. For me, it was Gettysburg by Randy Edelman. At the time, I didn't realize how thick, synthesized and homophonic it sounded. All I wanted were the melodies, and they meant a lot to me. Still do. From there, I got Gods and Generals, and then I think I started on the Star Wars series. My admiration for John Williams came from those scores, and has only grown since that time.

It has probably been about 3 years since I got Gettysburg, so I am a newcomer.

  11. Ah well, he is getting on a bit, so I can forgive him.

I think no matter what age I was, I would have a very hard time remembering any particulars after as many many projects he has done. I left a half-way finnished piece alone for a few months, and it took a bit of looking through for me to remember what I was doing when I went to pick it up again. And I'm only 18.

  12. W.A. Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Anton Bruckner and Reshtarc are much better composers.

    P.S. And James Horner

they weren't film composers and to be honest I like John's music better, I don't get the comparison between film music and classical music, they are not the same,

Oh, I didn't see the film part of you original post. Ok, well, that opinion as at least plausible.

    Colin Thomson

  13. Jerry was almost but not quite as good a John Williams. John is just flat out better than any film composer still composing or decomposing

Are you just looking for a fight? I would be happy to oblige. Shall we talk Beethoven?

Colin Thomson, who is derailing a thread, but for a perfectly noble reason.

Oh, and let me say on the Goldsmith topic: Franz Liszt and some other pianist once had a "piano duel" of sorts, in which I believe the popular opinion at the time was that the other pianist won. Funny thing though, I can't remember what the pianists name was...

    Time will tell.

  14. I might be going to the Boston concert, but I am not sure. I might not be sure for a while. Does anyone know how fast these tickets go? How long do I have before I have to buy? I know the sooner the better, but I really con't commit yet. So, any help on how long before these things usually sell out?

And I am beside myself at the idea of being there for the Indy 4 premiere.

    Colin Thomson

  15. I know what you mean. And even when I get a chance, there is something very hard about being creatively disciplined. I am learning to just write stuff, regardless of whether I consider it to be good or not. I used to try to only write masterpieces, but I never ended up writing much and the things I did write weren't masterpieces. It is far better to make yourself write music, regardless of what you consider to be its value. At least that is what I have found. Still trying to put it into actions, though.

    Colin Thomson

  16. Wow, that is odd. It always seems so wrong to go strait from "Hellfire" to "A Guy Like You". But, if that's chronological, I guess I will deal with it. Thanks very much.

    Colin Thomson

Well, there might be unreleased score that goes between those songs, not to mention the basical musical device of silence.

    I would assume so.
