Their tastes are far enough from ours that there's no point using them as a frame of reference. It's like asking a Kei$hia fan what they thought of Black Sunday. I think there is something to be said for the enduring popularity of the SW scores, and how they were always different from your average film score. It was always neat how much Joe 6-Pack loved a John Williams adventure score as much as your hardcore score listener, and how things would stand out musically to them after only one viewing. I don't think it means anything for Williams' craftsmanship in TFA, but it still makes me kinda sad that a lot of people don't seem to be getting the magic this time. That's put in words very well - kinda like 'your' favourite sportsteam not doing well. Would't go as far to claim, that it makes me sad though. It bothers me a little, can't completely say that I don't care... Yet, In the end it doesn't change the fact, that I, for myself, can see/hear a beauty in the music, which just fills my heart with joy. That Joy is not really affected by the opinion and tastes of others.

I absolutely agree. "Nothing hummable" seems to be all people care about and well, I kind of get what they mean. A simple, catchy melody can be the easiest connection between the story, its characters and the general audience. And Williams is pretty much known for his mastery in making these connections, so they have expectations. Williams' writing has definitly gotten more and more refined in the last 15 years and it's not that he isn't as melodic as in the 1970s/80s, but his style has evolved and the themes have a "complex simplistic" quality, as opposed to a simple simplicity.. Don't know if that makes sense... So in short: I REALLY love that score.

Just great how different opinions and tastes can be... easily one of my favourite tracks from the Album (up there with the top 5..) I love Williams in "NaziTheme" - "Meet the Press" - Fugal Mode - I cannot understand a bit how poeple can call it weak. I think it does what it's supposed to do very well: being a sort of revoltuionary, militaristic protest march! Daam da dadada... I PERSONALLY prefer it to for example... Battle of the Heroes..AND to almost EVERYTHING from Indy 4.. just my two cenrts

That major variation of the Imperial March was a cheaply made mock-up version and sounded like spoof/ridiculous... no way that's something written by Williams - you guys are funny..

Well in the FOTR EE Director's Commentary mentions that the guys from Plan 9 are his friends (am I right they also did the Hobbit Party music + A elbereth..) So I guess he wanted to give them the chance for a breakthrough?

Sounds just great, like rejected LotR Material but... Sampled choir, really??? ("Brass Buttons") The fake singers have an issue wenn it comes to "s" or "Sh" that really jumps out and is recognizable (like in Angels & Demons)

To be fair, I think he means it as his opinion, and not one set in stone at that. he clearly ment to say (in my opinion) "Hey, I can read music, I read it - it's mediocre, that's how it is - I know you people were expecting more, but hey I - the ONE who can.. I who can make paper sing in my head, do know it is not that good.. so that's how it is.. end of luck - baaad news" But the bad news has nothing to do with being able to read an orchestral score after much practice (which I don't question, after all, he better be able to do so!) I think he simply said bad news because he personaly thought it isn't as good as some people were expecting.We may be overthiking this. The strange part of his message is the "because there's sarcastic people on this forum, I won't share fun info", which, given that we're rarely mean spirited and the ones who would enjoy and appreciate such a thing, is weird. I would still like to hear that, if it was big enough to mention it. Yes ,I guess you're right.. You know what the funny thing is? I bet he is checking the thread now constantly for reactions to his post. always makes me sad to encounter people with such big ego-issues. Yes, def. so, because the "mistake" is in the officially published Hal Leonard JW Signature Edition of War Horse (dartmoor, 1912), which John Williams, and others of course, use in concert.

The cello section was either incredibly off or it played a wrong note. Yes that might be the case, someone in the section(or the whole section) played very loudly a wrong note giving the expression of the wrong chord. The basses and second violins are playing the third of that particular chord. In the conductor score it shows it as E-flat on both staves, but on the OST you can hear that it is most definitely E-natural. Maybe a typo on the publisher's part, or maybe Williams wanted to change the sound for some unknown reason. Indeed! that's odd.. I believe it is a typo, but on the other hand- Williams must notice such a major difference?? sound weird to my ears.. but just because I am used to that opening from the film/OST. he already played it "wrong" before:
