I've mentioned elsewhere: The only "live score" that I've seen was The Empire Strikes Back. I really felt it was a waste of my time and money. Between the horrible edits for the Special Edition crap and the fact that the audience GOT UP AND LEFT DURING THE CREDITS, it was a bad day. Seriously?!? Who pays $50 - and that was the cheap seats! - and gets up while the orchestra is still playing?!?

It was a terrible cinematic experience AND not a good symphonic experience.

I would dearly love to see a concert performance of the entire Empire score. I would even love to see it with projection like a live isolated score.

Mind you, there probably aren't many scores that I would want to hear start to finish. But probably a lot of the scores that currently make the rounds.

I got to see a "Star Wars vs. Star Trek" concert with the Phoenix Symphony a few years ago. It was unreal how much joy that brought me. Who knew how great it would be to hear Goldsmith's Ba'ku Village live? And Horner's Epilogue from Wrath of Khan was just bliss.

I can only imagine what it would be like to hear Star Wars or Star Trek: The Motion Picture live in their entirety. Or Superman. Or How to Train Your Dragon. I think How to Train Your Dragon 2 would kill me.

    Late to the party.

People are commenting on Reiser and Cameron. Nobody is mentioning Mark Rolston's suit? Or Michael Biehn?

Paxton looks so YOUNG. And putting Weaver anywhere near Jennette Goldstein is like putting Scarlett Johansson next to Karen Gillan. Who is the guy to the right of Weaver?

Alien and Aliens are obviously classics. Alien 3 is probably pretty amazing, but it spends all of the audience good will in the first scene when it kills Newt and Hicks. It could be brilliant after that but we don't care anymore.

I haven't seen Alien 4 since I watched it in the cinema. But my recollection is: First 30 minutes "This is amazing!" second 30 "This is really good" third 30 "Um, this is not good anymore" and the last 30 "Wow, this is terrible!"

I own all four on blu ray and I've mostly watched Alien. And occasionally Aliens. I should watch the work cut or whatever it's called of Alien3.

Prometheus. Sorry, I know it was trying to be deep. But Alien is smart first so it manages a kind of depth. Prometheus is stupid (really really stupid) so I don't care if it's deep or not. I will say that between X-Men First Class and Prometheus that Michael Fassbender has never been better.

I haven't bothered to see anything else. Although I've played Alien: Isolation until it got too scary for me to continue. Wow.

There are certainly a number of scores where the music and narrative quality are such that they would play very well in isolation from start to finish. Like going to watch a ballet (albeit with no dancing) or a long tone poem. Personally I’d happily go and watch a concert of Star Wars or Empire (obvious choices I grant you) as they are great music in their own right but also tell the story in music. Plus of course they have audience recognition. Unfortunately, the intersection between a score that’s interesting as music on its own in its entirety but with broad public appeal is probably fairly limited. As I’ve commented elsewhere, in any sane universe, we’d be watching Star Trek: The Motion Picture live to film but the movie isn’t popular enough to warrant it so they do the giacchino ones instead. But that’s a score that’s musically good enough to sustain its full run time as a piece of music in its own right.

Of course one option would be to do a shorter score for one half of a concert. Maybe Jaws (even the original album arrangement if not the full score) would work well.

I hadn't listened to this in 35 years. I've never seen the film. Hey, this was pretty good. (Not Eiger good.) I have no idea what would be on an expanded edition. This might find it's way into my regular rotation. Clearly my musical tastes have evolved from when I was 17. (Boy that was not a very good year.) That was back when I never listened to side two of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I'd like to have words with that kid.

I think that Christopher Young may have taken a slight inspiration for Hellraiser from this.

*Now that I'm thinking it, 1998 was a horrible year for blockbusters: Godzilla, Armageddon, this one... No wonder Titanic spent almost the entire year in the top 10 at the box office.

It also seemed particularly apt for Temuera Morrison, an actor of Māori descent.  If you know about the Māori or have seen enough Middle Earth documentaries, you’ll be familiar with their tradition of dance.

I was just thinking that I need to have a listen of all the 2021s. Since I rarely (never?) buy new titles I'm not sure what I should listen to. But for the old stuff I got Always, Eiger Sanction, and Wrath of Khan.

(Good grief. Was Bad Batch THIS year?)

Anyway, this morning: The Land Before Time

Wow. This might be just about the most Horner thing ever. I mean it's not like he didn't have a distinct enough style as it was. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving revisiting it. (Not sure why it hasn't been in my rotation for a while.)

This always messes up my timeline a bit since I didn't start listening to it (or watching it) until 1989. So I sometimes make the mistake of thinking he knocked out Field of Dreams, Glory, and this in the same year. (OK, even stretching to 1988 this was a crazy couple of years.) You know how you get those scores where you know just when you bought it and you remember exactly where you were when you listened to it? I'm a little surprised that I haven't been playing this and Always back to back like I did in the day. (And The Abyss. And Back to the Future II. AND THE LITTLE MERMAID! IT'S a 1989 RABBIT HOLE!)

Watched TYD1 and 2 this weekend. I get that 1 is the better movie. But 2 just sweeps me off my feet. I had the unreasonable expectation that there would be as big of a leap between 2 and 3 as there was between 1 and 2. Kudos to ending with the opening of the first book though.
