  1. I still can't get into the BATMAN score. The main theme is great, and there are a couple of fantastic tracks 'Descent into Mystery'; 'Finale' but I get bored by the rest. And the film. BIG FISH is a great flick. Burton has made some wonderful films, probably more than we give credit for (BEETLEJUICE, SCISSORHANDS, SLEEPY HOLLOW, BIG FISH) but he does seem very stale now (SWEENEY TODD aside, I loved that). I think the best thing he's ever been involved with was THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.
  2. It's an incredible experience. If SS hadn't made JAWS, I'd say it was his best movie. The Blu-Ray is pretty fantastic, too.
  3. Harder than first thought. Some Zimmer is really good, some not. I don't know much Vangelis outside of BLADE RUNNER, but I am a huge fan of that score. I'll say Vangelis because I don't think Zimmer has ever even come close to something like "Memories of Green."
  4. His last movie wasn't scored by Shore either. Can't wait for this movie. Fincher is an incredible director.
  5. Eidelman's STAR TREK VI. On a huge Trek kick right now. It's good stuff, I always liked this one.
  6. TDK. Both are terrific films, but TDK just opens it up a bit more.
  7. Even leaving TDK out of it (which, btw, I would happily give five stars to), THE GODFATHER is an incredible movie. Is it the greatest ever? Yes, I think so.
  8. True. but somehow the minute Paul Reiser appears on the screen (and this is in fact the only thing I've seen him in), you feel like you're right in the middle of the 80s. I definitely agree. He's certainly the true villain, if only for MY TWO DADS.
  9. I think ALIENS has dated, but I don't see it as any less of a film. It's still a powerhouse of a movie that's awesome, just not on the same level as ALIEN. However, I do agree that the introduction of the aliens-as-bees concept made them less scary. The original ALIEN was great in that, even though it was based on Earthbound concepts (the tarantula hawk for example), it just seemed so, well, alien. Like you could hardly put any frame of reference to it, other than the underlying uncomfortability of its femininity and its bipedal humanoid form. It was all so well thought-out and designed and the way it was put onscreen, and as much as I love ALIENS, it did sort of turn them into cannon fodder.
  10. I'd like to hear him record an instrumental version of the SE's 'Victory Celebration.' A new spin on it might be quite cool.
  11. It's certainly not buried to me. I just think that's all people see sometimes in those flicks, but for example, in SUPERBAD, the two characters' friendship and fear of being apart was there from very early on. (I'm having trouble replying today, as this thread, as with a couple of others, keeps getting blocked by my work).
  12. Back to Giacchino for a second, do we think he'll take many influences from the movie scores? He's said he'll use Courage's theme, but do you think he'll use Goldsmith's TMP theme in any way? I guess the way it was presented in NEMESIS kind of felt like a swansong, but I'd be a bit sad if I never heard that theme in another Trek flick.
  13. I think you're making too much of this. He makes movies for a certain demographic, who enjoy those movies. They're not the flagrant legalize-cannabis drug promotion flicks you make them out to be, they're just another movie in a long line of movies who have gotten laughs out of people getting stoned. If it's not your thing, fine, don't watch it. But making sure every time someone mentions an Apatow flick that you're in there to show how much you dislike him just portrays you as an obssessive. It's not too far away from scourge of the internet, Mr "Oh, did someone say Star Wars? Man, did George Lucas rape my childhood!" It's not really that different from flicks like FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, a movie I love to bits. I haven't taken drugs for a long time, but I like Apatow's comedies. Why? Because they're really smartly written, and underneath all the trash talk and the shock value stuff, they have some very genuine and sometimes very true things to say (THE FORTY YEAR OLD VIRGIN, SUPERBAD). Only a moron would look at those movies and think 'Oh, they're just about goofing off and getting high and making sex jokes.'
  14. TDK only made $5? That's a hell of a drop! Tickets here (based on when we saw TDK) are £7.10, which is currently $13.80.
  15. And the spider in THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN. That titanic final confrontation is still, well, incredible.
  16. And I enjoyed it enough to firmly say "stop now, while you're still ahead". I'll second that.
  17. STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER Wow. This is still a terrible film but I wanted trashy Trek and this didn't disappoint. Still, in some ways it feels like it's very true to the series, well, at least some of the weirder episodes. I think it probably could have worked as a B-episode, but as a film and the way it is, yikes. I read Shatner's Movie Memories and the version he planned with Erik Van Lustbader sounded interesting. I'm not surprised Paramount balked at the budget though, especially with some of its more "blasphemous" (other people's words) ideas. I do think the scene with Spock and McCoy belong in a different movie, perhaps a better one. On the other hand, I wish Nichelle Nichols fan dance was in a different movie. One I'd never seen. The visual effects though... man. The Enterprise never looked worse. Still, a lovely score from JG.
  18. I'm curious what was said on page three to cause my work internet censor to block it out. Has anyone mentioned Pazuzu yet?
  19. This thread needs more Bossk. All credit to Irvin Kershner for ensuring that in a dark and somber SF epic, a talking lizard in a space suit never ever feels anywhere near out of place.
  20. I don't really like the Universal fanfare anyway, but with E.T. sewed on the end it does seem like an awkward frankenlogo. Who wrote the previous Universal music? I loved that, especially with the BTTF III logo where it had a montage of all the previous logos (75th anniversary?).
  21. The previous poster reminded me of this, I'll also add Damien Thorn in DAMIEN: OMEN II and THE FINAL CONFLICT. He's a bit conflicted in DAMIEN, but still pretty damn good for a kid. Sam Neill's scenery chewing in TFC (especially his heart-to-hearts with the statue in his house) is much appreciated.
