Label Threads The Official Film Score Monthly (FSM) Thread
scallenger replied to Ollie's topic in General Discussion
Hmm... this release of "Prophecy" actually sounds really good! I reacted like 'meh' at first because I remember seeing the movie about a couple of years ago and didn't like it very much, but forgot if I even liked the music. Since I forgot if it was any good, I didn't think I'd want this. But hear the clips! From the clips alone I am sold... it sounds loud, fun, and strange with it's electronic element for the monster. I'm short on cash, but may actually get this tomorrow since it's only at 3000 units. I know how fast those can sell out (still regrets not getting INNERSPACE...) -
FSM to issue 2 disc set of Poltergeist later this year.
scallenger replied to Ollie's topic in General Discussion
While I am excited about POLTERGEIST getting a new release, and will buy it for sure, I really DO hope there is a release, somewhere, for GREMLINS this year, too. Like BACK TO THE FUTURE was last year, it is way overdue for a proper release. The tracks on the OST with the songs just doesn't cut it at all. -

I'm just happy to finally be able to own it on CD since it has been out of print since I have wanted it. I just have the Amazon download as of now. The current sound quality isn't bad at all, but I can definitely see how it could be improved to sound crisper and more alive, perhaps mixed better too. Next to Gremlins, Poltergeist is probably my favorite Goldsmith score. -

Alexandre Desplat will score "Deathly Hallows Pt. 1"
scallenger replied to TownerFan's topic in General Discussion
As far as I know, the director and all the cast members are saying that the 2 movies will be pretty different. They are calling Part 1 a "road movie", for example. There have been rumors of where the split between the two films will occur, but the studio keeps saying that they will change their mind if they want to for whatever makes the most satisfying ending to Part 1. The rumor right now is the split will occur right before the trio is taken as prisoners to Malfoy Manor, which in a way does make it end on a cliffhanger. This was actually revealed in an interview with one of the cast members. But like I said, this isn't set in stone. I think they very well could have 2 different composers for the 2 films. The 2nd half of the book is a bit different than how the first half was. I'm just now currently concerned that Desplat can do good action. Because Part 1 is actually full of action, no matter where the split occurs (the multiple Potters segment, the running through the Muggle town after the wedding breaks up, the part at the Ministry of Magic, and of course parts of their camping trip). Desplat has yet to please me with his action music. -
Alexandre Desplat will score "Deathly Hallows Pt. 1"
scallenger replied to TownerFan's topic in General Discussion
I don't see what's wrong with saying that Mugglenet.com confirmed it, since I do know for sure they do contact the studios and other people involved and hear back from them quite often when they try to verify rumors. They've also been around for a long time. -
Alexandre Desplat will score "Deathly Hallows Pt. 1"
scallenger replied to TownerFan's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, it looks like it is official. Mugglent.com confirmed it now, after talking to FSM and also mentioning the agent said so as well. So, there we have it. I still find it odd he is only confirmed for Part 1, and not both. Would they really still try to get Williams for Part 2? I think that would actually be kind of odd, though I guess I wouldn't say no. -

Where did you hear his manager confirmed it? (just wondering) The Harry Potter fansites are actually now contacting the studio, etc like they always do to also try to confirm, so I'm sure we'll know everything either way soon. But yeah, I believe it is true. -
Alexandre Desplat will score "Deathly Hallows Pt. 1"
scallenger replied to TownerFan's topic in General Discussion
Actually both parts will have quite a bit of action. Even the stars have been stating that they have been running quite a bit. I've read the book, and a lot of stuff happens, and there are a lot of opportunities for old themes to be brought back from past films. -

I am pretty dissapointed Williams isn't doing Part 1 (and probably not Part 2 either, not to sound pessimistic). However, although I don't really care much for Desplat's music (I think they serve the films well but aren't too engaging out of them), it could have been a lot worse. Hell, it could have been an unknown, like Hooper pretty much was. Man, I'm so glad at least it isn't him again! I found his scores for Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince to be rather dull, save for a handful of cues. I think we should also be lucky it wasn't someone like Zimmer... though I like some of his scores, I wouldn't want him to touch Potter. It was scary enough hearing that Media Ventures-sounding version of the Potter theme in a trailer used for Half-Blood Prince... ugh! Is Desplat really a John Williams fan? How do you know? And if so, I hope he quotes the themes well, and uses them appropriately. -

What Is The Last Film You Watched?

BAD LIEUTENANT Is So Awesomely Bad That It's Simply Iguana-Lovingly Cracked Out! (WARNING: Some language is a bit adult. Moderators, edit if necessary.) Wow. Oh my god. Oh my god. Did I just see that? What was that? Can I go back and see that again? What? What?! WHAT?! Really?! Honestly?! The above reactions aren't in regards to a car accident or a horrible roadkill. They are reactions to something far greater than either one of those things will ever be. It's a movie, lovingly called Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans. Only it isn't even really a movie. It's a cracked out experience, not one I have enjoyed so much since Grindhouse. And that is really saying something, because Grindhouse IS like crack to me. So what is this movie in comparison, then? It's Nicholas Cage, that's what! In this film (hell, let's called it BL), Cage IS crack. I don't know what he did to get into this role, but never on screen have I seen a well-known actor act so... batshit insane! I mean, really? Seriously? I don't even want to give anything way. It's so god damn fun. And I have to say profanity with that, because that's what kind of fun it is. You sit there, watching this strange drama play out before you, when suddenly, there's Cage, acting crazy, and crazy things happen. Cutting off air supply from old lady. Putting gun to old lady's head. Going on a rant basically saying he despises old ladies. Dead alligators. Imaginary iguanas. Breakdancing. It's all there! But in what context could this all possibly work?! Does it even work? BL is batshit loopey, no question. And it's done in a way so intentionally unintentionally hilarious (which is quite an achievement) that most film-goers will NOT get the movie at all. They'll see it as a bland and oddly-acted failure of a film. But really guys, it's not. It's the best comedy of the year. It's the most surprising thing of the year. And Cage is actually having fun in this movie. You can tell. But it's the kind of fun that is actually quite engaging, and there even are a couple of tender moments where even though he is batshit insane, it works. And it is GOOD acting. You can't even heckle a movie like this by making jokes yourself, you can only laugh at it. You just sit there, waiting for the next crazy thing to happen. And it always comes eventually. It's all sprinkled everywhere, like the best cupcake from the best birthday party you have ever been to. If you appreciate films like this, and love to go to the movies for an experience, not just for a movie, this IS the movie for you. It as by far the best movie experience I have had all year (which I shared it with my lovely friend/coworker Merrill, and a nice can of Mike's Hard Lemonade). It's perfect. And the ending was a bit of a surprise. It's not a shocker kind of ending, but it's so wonderful that it made this cupcake taste sweet to the last bite. Michael Bay may have raped Megan Fox with the camera in both Transformers films, but director Werner Herzog totally rapes and murders iguanas with his in this film! Seriously! You have never looked at an iguana as lovingly as you will see in this film. Pure magic. And that's what movies are all about. From magical wands to iguanas, it's all about magic, baby! -

Did anyone else here get "In Search Of Peace" like I did (it sold out I think within 2 days of it being out, since there were only 1,000 copies). I finally got to listen to it and I was blown away! Powerful music, that is touching and thrilling throughout. -
The part with Water/Slalom/And Unreleased Water (???) does indeed have the unreleased part! Too bad it has the water SFX loud and clear! UGH!

I'm still debating on getting this. I'm going to watch the movie again right now to decide. Haven't seen it in a while. But yes, Gremlins next from Goldsmith, please! The footwarmer could use a delicious upgrade.

Well isn't Intrada in California? It may help for me, since I too live in California. And I paid with paypal right away the night it was released. Sorry! lol. I will say this release is pretty darn perfect. Sound quality is about as superb as it could be (though the linear notes, which are also great and detailed, say they are from various sources for quality (and mentioned the tapes with the music were actually deteriorating quite a bit even though it's been less than 30 years), including Silvestri himself). The sound quality on CD 2 is a little bit lower, probably because there weren't as many sources for it (just one I guess). Anyway, it really is all the music from the film, and it's wonderful. CD 2 was interesting (though the best moments are actually found on the clips on Intrada), however it is a good thing the score was changed or I don't think it would have been nearly as memorable. Still, it is an incredible thing to hear and spot the differences between the two, but it won't be spinning in my player nearly as often as CD 1 will. Finally! The boots can go in the trash! The only gripe I really have is that the 2 source cues on CD 1 should have been put at the end. I know they put them within the score to retain continuity, but in my opinion it does stop the flow. I know people have various opinions on this, but that is mine. But with that being the only complaint I have, I am happy it is quite trivial. I also was able to get "In Search Of Peace" though I still haven't listened to it yet. I bought it on a whim because I thought all the sound clips were spectacular. Never seen the film it accompanies. My wallet hurts so bad! LOL. That is why I am still debating if I will get Innerspace...

I GOT IT! I GOT THE GOLDEN TICKET!!! Actually, even better, my Back to the Future arrived!!! I'll let you know all about it if you wish. Gonna listen to it now!

Hmm... I'm kind of dissapointed with these 3, to be honest. I guess I was really, really hoping it'd be Gremlins. But I guess the release of Back to the Future got me overly optimistic. I may get Innerspace though for the time being. I remember liking the music enough. And I do love Goldsmith! -

So were these the last releases from Intrada this year? Or are there still a month's worth next month to look forward to? -
Yeah, as excited as I am about getting the complete film score of BTTF 1 officially on CD in great sound quality, I am actually more interested to hear this 2nd CD of the original version!!! Maybe it is because I have heard the score apart from the film via this "other way" some people here have mentioned, but I just loved what I heard from the 3 sound clips of this alternate version. It's pretty much a full length score! I find it interesting that perhaps some tracks he didn't change at all from the beginning. Example: Disc 1 has the "'85 Twin Pines Mall" track, but Disc 2 does not, and yet Disc 1 and 2 both have their own long "Clocktower" tracks. So I guess certain tracks retained their use from the beginning, or maybe the alternate simply wasn't different enough.
-
I totally agree! The first score does repeat itself, but just enough to make it enjoyable, imo. However, the score for Part 2 is hard to listen for the exaggerated amounts of repeat (I think we hear the same renditions of the same music maybe 6 or 7 times at least, no joke, at least in its complete form). And Part 3 is just good in parts, but at least is different. But yeah, as for Part 2 being one of the best sequels ever, I agree! It is a bit darker, funnier, and goes back to the first movie with the exact same events from a different angle. It was a pretty brave thing for a sequel to such a successful movie to do, and I know not everyone likes it very much. But that was probably why they followed it with the much more formulaic Part 3, which is also enjoyable, but not nearly as original as Part 2 was. I don't think there is any film like it that was made before it or since.
