scallenger got a reaction from TSMefford in James Horner's THE LAND BEFORE TIME (1988) - NEW Intrada 2020
While I am happy with this release I am also happy to hear the possibility of getting the "insert" version of that track! Thank you guys for considering it! And hey, now it'll be the best of both worlds.

Call me novice, but I always wondered... when Horner did these long, suite-like tracks... ARE they all one take each? Or are they stitched together like how Williams does it? So if Barry The Bassoonist flubs a note in the last 10 seconds of the 10 minute suite, they have to redo the entire thing? Talk about pressure!

What about Krull?! Where's the love for Krull?! That one is definitely in my top Horner (and have the LLL release of course).

OMG YES! I do wonder just how much was missing from the OST? I don't think much. Even so... I don't even own this one on CD!

We can only hope that it will be as brilliant as that show, one of the best series in the last few years.

I am interested in this! Will be curious to see how it turns out. Happy they got Warwick back... if they hadn't I probably would barely have any interest. I mean he IS Willow. Sucks that it is unlikely Val Kilmer will be able to come back, given his unfortunate condition these days. :/ Maybe they'll sneak in a cameo somehow, but yeah... they waited too long. :/

used to watch the 1990 movie a lot as a child and just watched it again last night. I know there's always a certain chance to overhype things from your childhood, but I really think that the first 13 minutes – with the grandmother talking about her friend Erika and the death of the parents – are beautiful terrifying and very well made.

I am still waiting for mine in the mail (in the States), but someone I know allowed me to preview their copy in the meantime. I can definitely concur with Tom that this score sounds incredible on this release! Probably is the best it has ever sounded! I do think the sessions were a bit quieter and not as balanced compared to this, so this release is definitely an improvement over that from what I can remember! Regardless, this is the perfect presentation of the score... although I think the demos at the end are one of those curiosity listens that are fun to hear once, then never again. For demos they sound really good, but they basically just sound like deflated versions of what you hear beforehand and aren't MUCH different (like an alternate would be) otherwise. However, I can see why they added them to give more bang for the buck to take up space on a second disc, so this isn't a complaint at all; just don't want people to get too excited for those who had never heard them. I think sessions had more of these demos, but again it was basically just like listening to a flatter version of the whole score anyway.
Again, I REALLY hope people get this release so the chances of them doing the sequel scores will go way up!

I’m not sure the difference is materially different to the FYC, but the expanded release sounds pretty spectacular, the horns have a gorgeous roundness to them, the moment when they play out the main theme in Test Drive at 40 seconds hasn’t sounded better (to pick up in another thread that’s one of my all time favourite moments of any score, very much a hairs on the back of the neck moment notwithstanding that I’ve listened to that track probably well over 100 times (indeed it’s one of my all time favourite cues alongside See You Tomorrow)). I think the mix has more air to the soundstage compared to the original album so the sonic upgrade in that regard is worth the investment.
The additional cues round out the original selection nicely. Given how much I love this score I really feel I should know it better (possibly a side effect of not having seen the film in a long while) but there are several tracks that always take me by surprise. And some which will doubtless take some by surprise who are only familiar with the original album. Parts of relax/stroke/hell sound like they’ve escaped from an historical epic.
I’m still in two minds about the song. Ans that’s said as a more than casual (but not fanatical) fan of Jonsi/Sigur Ros. However I think the other two are better, the second for the terrific way it’s mixed with extracts from Powell’s score and the third as its just a lovely song. Still glad to have it.
But yeah. This is a great release. So great to have the full score in amazing sound. It’s not just the many memorable themes, but that so many of the cues function more or less as “proper” music with a beginning, middle and end and a dramatic arc within them as well as across the entire narrative of the score. Superb stuff.

Yeah, I didn't buy it really for the new music either, since it has all been... out there already (at least I don't think this has anything that wasn't?). But I wanted to support this release and like others see if the sound quality is improved; happy to hear it is! I also want to support this release because hopefully it will inspire one for the sequels, if they aren't already in the works... There's definitely stuff from those that hasn't been out there that I would definitely love to hear.

I LOVE that film version with the sudden orchestral ending you mentioned... it's such an exciting yet unexpected way to conclude it!

Well, we should be in luck, provided Powell follows the same formula for the sequels as with this release.

Yeah, you're right! I have heard some of them, too. There are some unofficial edits of this score out there, but most are riddled with sfx of course for that kind of material. That's why if there is a expanded release for the sequel I REALLY hope it includes that kind of material, because to me it is part of the score.

Yeah it actually made it bit unpleasant, especially during the louder moments. This new album is still really loud but I get a sense that I hear more fine detail and the instrument sections don't feel as clumped together in one big mass. Again, forgive my lack of proper vocabulary but I'm trying to describe my impressions as best as I can. 😆 Overall, I'd say the sound difference is a bigger reason to buy this, not new music. It's all really good (the extra music) but the OST did the score justice already.
