I have conducted an interview with Leo Birenberg, composer of this series, for my channel.  Hope you guys enjoy. It includes music from the show throughout as we talk (over it), but one of the cues plays at the very end on its own.

scallenger got a reaction from crumbs in Rate and discuss David Arnold's score to Godzilla
Honestly, this will forever be my favorite David Arnold score. Is Independence Day a better score? Yes. It has better dramatic music and more memorable themes in comparison. But I don't know, this score is just such a rush. It's relentless, especially in its second hour... I mean, holy crap. And I have honestly always loved the film. I'm with Thor on this one. Was never big on Godzilla's original films or anything else, so having him reimagined to look like a dinosaur iguana wasn't a big deal to me. Of course, as you can see, I am really into Jurassic Park; and I remember seeing this as a kid when it came out and was absolutely thrilled with all the references and etc. And the music made the film so exciting, again especially in its final hour, that I really was carried away with this film at the time. I remember the audience really enjoying it, actually! Maybe I just saw it with a good group, because I definitely see its faults now and also understand why people don't like it, especially if they were original Godzilla fans (I have since only seen the original film, and it is quite good!)... but I can't ever NOT like this film. It's goofy as hell and dumb, but never not fun (well... okay maybe the mid-section kind of drags). I am actually REALLY curious to check out its animated series it had... which continues right where the film ends. I'm told it's actually quite good and improves on a lot of the film's issues, even with the characters, including Godzilla himself. From clips it looks like a lot of fun. Don't think it uses Arnold's score though, haha.

I remember finding the promo bootleg during the Napster days... and man... was so happy when I did. I have fond memories of that presentation of the score, and it just didn't make sense to me why it was never officially released, and instead a album of unrelated rap songs? I never understood that trend, and never will. I remember I was coming home from work one day and saw the e-mail newsletter about Godzilla being released by LLL. I cannot tell you... other than LLL's release of Jurassic Park/Lost World... I don't think I had ever been THAT excited for a release before. At that time, such a thing felt impossible... I thought for sure Independence Day would have happened before it ever had a chance to, for example. But no... Godzilla came first. And I knew from watching the film what amazing music had been left unreleased all these years, buried in a lot of SFX to be extracted properly, and I remember at the time always saying "if it ever got a complete release, it would be one of the greatest action scores of all time." I wasn't as well-rounded with scores back then as I would like to think I am now, but I still think I was actually pretty accurate still in saying that.

Shockingly, I actually did sell off my set... but that was only because there was that 3-disc reissue that came out from BuySoundtrax. It included a couple more alternates which was cool, but I really got it for the first legit release of that promo album (which I am PRETTY sure has an alternate or two of its own in there). Having that back for nostalgic purposes was a huge treat, honestly, even though I prefer the whole score. I really recommend getting it if anyone here somehow still doesn't have this release. It's actually still in print.

Indeed. Never understood what people's issues were with this. I guess I can understand it if you're a hardcore Godzilla fan, and the film was too radical a departure from the design or tradition of the old movies, but personally I never gave a toss about that. As a monster flick, it's very good!

Great score, although only enjoyed in its original promo presentation of 49 minutes.

The film is massively underrated, IMO. I prefer it over any and all of the preceding films, even the original Japanese ones (well, the ones I've seen, anyway, I've never been a big Godzilla fan, really). Loads of great little "mini movies", i.e. setpieces in the style of JURASSIC PARK at times. Fantastic build, like Emmerich always does well.  But obviously also moments of 'hokeyness'.

Yea that's why they should only be releases as bonuses on a bonus disc, not part of a main program.  And yea, I'm sure a competent producer could make them sound much better than the producer of the box did - or even locate an earlier generation element from before the singing was married to the orchestral recording

Yea I picked up the exclusive Best Buy version of that, which had more demos than the "normal" version... and this was after we already got that one demo on Music For A Darkened Theater 2, and before we got all the demos in the box

A 2CD set would be great

Disc 1 = The complete score with all the songs throughout
Disc 2 = The demo versions of all the songs + the instrumental versions of the songs

    Easy peasy!

Apart from Solo not being a universally liked film (I thought it was actually pretty good, although with some issues), I think the soundtrack for it is largely liked/loved within the soundtrack community. So here's hoping that will be enough to get some people to go after this. Plus, it DOES help that it features more Williams music. They should play that bit up a little more for the nerds like us.

Solo and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom were my favorite scores of 2018, and some of the best in the past decade imo. As others have noted, Solo didn't even have an FYC or any other "leaks", so having this arrive is so freaking awesome! I guess the possibility of a limited CD version is out?

Is this the future of film music anyhow, to have digital releases? I wouldn't be opposed anymore, honestly. General music is widely available online, and film music should be too. And not JUST the OST releases, like is currently the model. These complete releases should have the same availability in the modern digital market so an aspiring 15 year old can use their parent's PayPal to listen to... well in this real case, the complete release of Solo! Instead of scouring on ebay for for out of print CD copies and paying 3 times as much on their poor parent's account and then have to explain themselves when the CD comes in the mail.  For example: Jurassic Park and The Lost World. The set is out of print, and fetches for a pretty penny now. The Amazon digital release is only the OST (edit: in JP's case there is also the 25th anniversary edition, but we know that wasn't complete either!). So this fictional 15 year old I speak of can never hear the wonders of "Race to the Dock" and "Ripples"?! NO. lol.

Anyway, congrats on Solo! Powell should be proud of this score. It's my favorite of his next to his How To Train Your Dragon trilogy. Hey... can THOSE be next, please?

So today I got in the mail today via eBay what is a NEW CD release of this score! I went to Orlando last year and never saw this anywhere, so this must have just come out this year or something. It is a legit CD release from someone in the Orlando area, so I am sure it is a park exclusive. Take a look!

EDIT: Some more info from the seller: Unfortunately Disney is not carrying them at the parks they have done away with all their music albums and cd's sadly. We have to order them through disney records and they too are no longer issuing them so were not sure if their sold out for now or just discontinued. Some of the park music is starting to come out on vinyl only such as the Tiki Room and Star Wars Land.

Yeah the music was the only thing that was really a step down for the show, apart from some weaker visuals in comparison to the film at times. I also think I liked the film versions of Monty and Josaphine, too. Otherwise, both Carey's and Harris's Olafs were great. I honestly think they tie in performance; and I think Carey could have carried his take just as well if he had been allowed to in future films. I LOVE how this show turned out, and yet I still really enjoy the film version.

I’m relieved I’m not the only one who thought Grimmel’s theme sounds like Blue’s theme! I thought I was nuts. Though, yeah, I guess I am anyway. It works anyhow, as Powell puts the theme through a lot more variations than Giacchino did with Blue’s.
