scallenger reacted to Taikomochi in John Powell's How To Train Your Dragon (3): The Hidden World
I like Armada Battle, but I think it suffers in comparison to 2’s Battle of the Bewildebeast which was so propulsive and featured new developments of many of the themes, where a lot of the material in Armada Battle is better-orchestrated restatements of older material, which is a little disappointing to me. I love the new material in that track, but some of it feels redundant.
I think Powell was probably playing to nostalgia a bit the way he did in Solo’s Reminiscence Therapy, except with his own material, but Armada Battle doesn’t have all the awesome transitional material that that track had that, to me, made it so exciting.

Not missing anything thematic wise, however I believe this suite was made as a concert piece of sorts, similar to what Williams would've done. Different 'connective tissue' so to speak.

I'm joining the "love" camp, for the score/songs and film. To be fair, I was never huge on Mary Poppins, even as a kid despite having seen it then (and re-watched it before seeing the new film). Sure, the original does some things better but, color me crazy, I feel like I connected with this film more. The songs and the film have several ways of tapping into depression/sadness, even the livelier ones if you pay attention, that I thought was both clever and meaningful. It definitely has some genuine heart and effort put into it above the usual "cash grab" attempts at reigniting a classic film. I'll take this any day over the BORING-looking remakes of Dumbo, Lion King, and Aladdin that all previewed before this film! At least here there was something new... and something catchy.

I really like the suite! Is anything presented in it much different than heard elsewhere in the film score, from those that have seen it?

I just rip that section as one track to keep them combined. I can never imagine to listening to them separate; it's just too weird to me.

scallenger got a reaction from Arpy in The Academy has announced the shortlist of 15 scores for best score
I still can't get over Solo not being able to be nominated for best score due to a deadline. Makes this year's Oscars totally irrelevant to me for it to not even be considered. It's one of the best new scores in years and... no, I can't.
Not surprised Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom didn't get nominated for best score, despite it being my second favorite new score of the year. A vast improvement over the previous score, and moves at a real nice clip on album form, but I guess the epic choir statements weren't enough for a nom this year.

Yes, the PoA teaser version (and the Prague Philharmonic version) is indeed more enchanting, magical, and somehow mischievous! Like I mentioned before, the choir sounds more female and is higher pitched, I think that's the main difference. This song is associated more with witches than with wizards, maybe that's why it sounds better? Not sure.
But the OST version, while I love that version also, sounds a bit clinical and less enchanting, by comparison...

So the best score of the year isn't getting an FYC album or even a nomination possibility? Unbelievable.

Hey I love his score to the IMAX film T-Rex: Back To The Cretaceous. Of course I would know this score (have any of you seen my avatar and sig?).

So what was with those rumors of the music being destroyed for the trailer? Just flat-out false, or was there some truth to that and a copy elsewhere was found?

I've figured out what is happening here... this Potter set has turned us all into a bunch of Dudleys!

I'm probably in the minority here, but as a big Chris Columbus fan, I consider the original Potter movie--Philosopher's Stone--to be the best among the bunch. What CC achieved with this movie is monumental. It's just not overtly fancy and avant garde like Cuaron, but still, it's one of the best movies in this category. This movie is immensely well made and watchable.
That said, the score is a different matter. PS and PoA are, for me, pretty much on the same level, although they differ in style. CoS suffers a little from Ross's involvement, but JW's new themes are no doubt as good as his themes from the other movies!
