  1. @Jay 1978 - WTF? Seriously, bro? Not in your TOP 50??? Speed 2? Earth Star Voyager? But NOTHING for ‘78? We need to talk.
  2. Conan The Destroyer is terrific fun with great stunts, Arnold at his physical peak, plenty of sorcery to go with the sword, and yeah a smashing good score. It’s a little more playful and sometimes easier to watch than the original. I love it.
  3. None of which I’m aware. I can’t imagine any of his other films having a lead performer merit an Academy nomination. But Roddy Piper deserved it for They Live.
  4. Wow I haven’t seen Starman since I was a kid. Need to watch that again or turn in my John Carpenter fan card.
  5. Young is white hot right now. John Powell is so last week! I have no Christopher Young scores, but Hellraiser is on the way. Is this one good?
  6. Omega Man is one of my favorite recordings ever. Rest in Peace.
  7. Could it be argued that Waterworld is a pirate film? I missed that one until recently too, and my review is almost identical to that of Cutthroat Island - that it was an unfairly maligned, fun, if imperfect, charming actioner. It seemed in the mid 90s that Hollywood columnists had a fetish for building up negative doom hype about overbudget event movies. And it sort of worked to drive audiences away, until Titanic came and put a stop to it.
  8. Interesting that the 4K Arrow release was only the Theatrical Cut. There are a significant few at the Blu-ray.com forum who prefer it to the DC. The 4K is now OOP in the US, with some speculating that a release of the DC is why.
  9. I’m too busy watching trash cinema and b movies. It’s on my list.
  10. I haven’t seen the film or heard the score. All I can say is that I talked to Ke Huy Quan once at a convention about film music and he says CP is his absolute favorite.
  11. Yeah, that’s a fun one! Cutthroat Island First time watch for me. What didn’t audiences like about this? This was everything I wanted it to be. The 90s were very good for action movies. Before digital stunts and digital hyper camera movements. The pyrotechnics and stunts are top notch. The performances are just fine. My wife chuckled at some of the hokey dialogue and romance while Modine removes a bullet from Geena Davis. I told her, “It’s Cutthroat Island. What do you want?” Unpopular opinion: I still haven’t fully warmed to Debney’s score. It is without relent. I did have to volume down the remote a few times. The score is the gold standard for bombastic. I would’ve liked some nuance and subtlety where the scenes would’ve allowed. It’s propulsive though, I’ll give him that. The movie gave me everything I wanted to see in a throwback pirate movie. Cannons blazing, sword fights, pirate treasure, swashbuckling rope swings, double crossing, and old Hollywood romance. This movie looked expensive, and was a feast for the eyes. The production design felt real, the visuals felt earned. Sure, the characters were a bit thin. I was too busy enjoying the monkey to care.
  12. I fail to see a logical connection between the two. Get them both. When Subspace Rhapsody was released digitally, I told myself if they ever released a vinyl I would buy it. The retro style and whimsical art aesthetic won me over. So yeah, this will be mine.
  13. Something in the air. I’ve been taking a Sarde journey too. The box set is in my cart.
  14. Subspace Rhapsody has a physical release on vinyl. I’m not a vinyl person, but this artwork is perfect for the format, and I loved the episode, so… Star Trek Strange New Worlds "Subspace Rhapsody" https://a.co/d/bzkDYiu
  15. I want the Blu Ray, but I keep waiting for a release that is cost effective for western territories.
  16. the Sword and the Sorcerer , 1982 D. Albert Pyun Wow, that poster looks like it was airbrushed onto the side of a 70s Van! Believe it or not, everything in that poster actually happens in the climax of the film. The problem is, Albert Pyun makes really crappy movies (Cyborg, Captain America, and almost Cannon’s Spider-Man), as in boring. Not enough sword, and definitely not enough sorcery. It’s a bit of a slog. I always remember this VHS was ubiquitous at every video store. Although I can’t imagine watching it on VHS because boy is it DARK. There’s decent swashbuckling from our hero, but it’s a lot of back and forth getting new characters to help aid the revolution. Richard Moll is good as the sorcerer, there’s just not enough of him. 5/10
  17. Discovery Season 5 is off to a fun start. This show will never be what some people want, but there’s a definite lighter tone for this season. Feels like they’re trying to bring the fun. It is, as the producers admitted, an Indiana Jones style quest. Some of it is almost literal homage. I’m having a good time with it.
  18. Great fun, that one. Love the scene of Shatner picking live tarantulas off the car seat before getting in his truck.
  19. Ah another good example I’d forgotten. Just got back from walking the dog and had the Rocketeer’s themes swirling in my mind. .. the themes of both Jenny and the Rocketeer are so interconnected and intertwined, to suggest it’s not much of a theme is to say the same of the Rocketeer theme itself. They’re sort of the same thematic coin.
  20. I think so. It’s more accessible, I’ll put it that way. I also think it resolves in a more satisfying way. It’s safer, and stays within the box a little more, but I think that’s to its advantage. We’ve always had a remnant of the first theme in the final version of The Enterprise, and it always seemed like a nice variation of the final theme (which at the time, we had no knowledge was a re-write). But it never surpassed the BAM of the Enterprise theme kicking in with the money shot of ship. Anyways, Jenny’s theme from the Rocketeer is melodic, hummable, emotionally satisfying, and thematically practical. Horner did well.
  21. Right, it is very hummable. And it truly is long lined, I wasn't being sarcastic. It has two repeating phrases, an ascending middle that rises to a crescendo and then comes all the way back down to the beginning. Then its midsection plays counterpoint with the Rocketeer theme. It's gorgeous. Oh and Robert Wise was wrong about Jerry's first Star Trek theme too. It's lovely. I'm glad he rejected it because the second theme is better, and now we have both. But how could Wise not hear the theme?
  22. I am hyped for this Omen prequel. More than I know I should be. They've done the marketing right. There was a retro style trailer, and the posters pay homage to the original. I wish I was in one of the cities that is projecting this in 35mm!!! That would be amazing.
