Still, what's so unsatisfying about what happened in the movie that someone would feel their DeviantArt posts are better? What would be more dramatically satisfying?

Why do people want Rey's parents to be anything but what they were said to be in The Last Jedi?

I've considered this shot many a time over years, because of the impact and objective of Williams' music there. The climatic final scenes of E.T. are sometimes accused of being overblown or "too much", but I think this is to miss the point; see, I don't think Williams is scoring "forever changed" Elliott's personal story in this final shot (and the exhilarating reaction shots preceding it).

The resolution of the "Boy's Life" was already paid due service in the emotional farewells earlier in the scene, that aspect had already wrapped as E.T.'s glowing heart disappeared behind the spiral door.

After that, Williams, in those final closing moments, adopts a Homer-esque stylistic grandeur in his music, it becomes underscore for the ending of an epic poem, a near mythological grand finale only suitable for what is a momentous event not just for a little boy, but for all of mankind. Williams took Spielberg's child catharsis in Elliott's face and juxtaposed it against a backdrop of mankind forever changed - in the event of First Contact being made.

That's why the pounding timpani is there, that's why the music is so transcendent, and that's why Williams is a total beast.

I agree with Chen in that I don't think there's intention there to call back to Vader. For me, it's really cool music that plays as Luke strides out of the hunkered saloon to face the banditos in the empty streets.

Honestly, pushing the plot forward in cases like that seem more redundant than having a one-off with returning characters. Maybe if I was into the whole cinematic universe thing I'd feel differently, but really with these movies, all I want are fun adventures that show a director's or team's (key word:) personal little take on this world started by Lucas 40 years ago.

And if that's too much to ask from a corporation like Disney, well, I'm sure they'll be fine without my financial support.

People have been pissin' on this movie from the beginning, no help from all of the production woes that have been swirling around. But with some of the footage, coupled with Powell, Williams, and an interview with the Kasdans saying they didn't set out to write an origin story per se,  but rather an adventure with their favorite character, and this might be the first Star Wars spin-off I see.

Wade's Death is one of my favorite Williams tracks. Holy crap. Who knew a World War 2 film could bring John Williams at some of his angstiest? At 3:20, I wanna say Earnest is having a private moment of grief...the bitterness and tension create a depth that really encapsulates Williams' supreme abilities of scoring drama in a supportive yet powerful way.

As far as bringing back an older theme in this score...man, did Williams take the ball, chew it out, then pimp slap it out of the park. The reprise of Luke and Leia is so tender, yet also carries this certain tension that smacks me right in the heart.

The ostinato thing feels very strange for John Williams to do in a Star Wars movie, but I think it works.

To me, the ostinato part is the highlight of the cue. I wouldn't be surprised if that part of the movie was temp tracked with Bruckner.

Again, I think it might be more a matter of people just not finding the backstory of a beloved and iconic character who never needed one to be very interesting. Like how people were complaining about Prometheus because they didn't want the mystique of the xenomorph and that whole world explained.
