Good question. At the start of T1, the events of 1984 have not happened. Only by travelling back in time, does Arnie set these events in motion. For example: someone from 2017, goes back in time to murder your mum, therefore, no you. But you are alive in 2017, which means that nobody went back to do your mum, until 2017, which means that the events of the future both do, and do not, happen.
