As far as I'm aware, JW wrote about 40 mins. of new score, including at least four new themes. Ross then adapted the first score to fit the film (and a splendid job he did, too).
Personally, I don't care who did what, as it's a really good score. 'Nuff said.

    Guys, that's FIRST KNIGHT

I have this score, but it's been ages since I heard it. I'll give it another listen, asap, but I remember it not being one of his most inspired works. The film is, basically, Muslim-bashing, before Muslim-bashing became popular.

Josh, you really need THE FINAL CONFLICT, and STAR TREK:TMP, asap!!!

That wonderful bit of music that plays when R2D2 and C3PO jettison from Princess Leia's ship in an escape pod in the original Star Wars. I remember moving the needle back on my record player and listening to that small bit of music over and over again.

OK, so it may not be Christmas time, but who gives a damn? This short brass interlude from Home Alone 2:

Hey like it or not, samples is the way forward these days. Studios don't want to pay for full orchestra unless it's the bigger movies and even then it's struggle to get them to pay. I am not judging him on using samples. But write something while you use the samples. Write around it. Write something simple but interesting. Not one note... I have Zimmer Soundtracks (lets be honest though, who knows who wrote what in them, lol) But I own them. I like some of his factory's work.

As for the person who said I am self important and plugging myself or something and that I don't have a studio at home because I am a big shot or whatever. Lets take it the other way. I don't have a studio at home because I have no room for a studio in my house. It's not because I am some big shot. It's because at home I just have my piano, and even that is in my living/dining room and until this TV project I have never had need of a studio, all my writing is pencil to paper and then I orchestrate into Finale. I like doing everything myself.

Plugging myself, well, lets see. This is my job, I'm a small fry in Hollywood but I am proud of everything I do. If I didn't plug myself who will? Isn't that the point though? To learn to be proud enough of your work to share it? No matter who is going to say what about it? There are those people who will hate me and those who will like me. Same with what I write. But I'm OK with that.

It might be effective in the film, but I have to agree with ocelot: this is damned lazy, even by Zimmer's piss-poor standards.
BATTLE IN THE AIR it ain't!
If this is the future of film scoring, then I'm going to give up and start listenening to thrash metal.

It's not about liking or not liking this crap. Music is subjective and you can like and listen to whatever you want to. I have crap I listen to. But every single person in this forum can do this track. One finger down on the keyboard for the drum loop, and it is a drum loop because I have it and I have used it. One finger down on the repeating note. You put your finger down and it repeats at the exact tempo you are in. You have to do nothing, and one finger down for the other sounds that you are bending. IE: LAZY LAZY LAZY!!! It's fine to use samples and loops, but you still should write music around it, through it, on top of it, even if you are keeping it simple. This can be done by anyone, without any knowledge of music. You don't need to know one instrument or be able to read music. This track literally takes 10 minutes of your time at best to do. That's it.

Option 5: as TLJ is all but finished, JW composes THE PAPERS from September-November. This leaves him free to score RPO January-February, next year. Sorted.

The notion that accepted consensus is king and critical dissent is poison and those representing it 'problematic' is a development that really rose to the front in the 90's when society became much more apolitical (than, say, in the 70's and 80's) and we entered what in Germany was labeled 'fun society'. Had its advantages, too, but it is also a reason for several less sympathetic developments.

All of this has nothing to do with successful modern film composers, per se, but they represent one of the results of a less incriminating age where there's neither much demand nor obligation to reach a level of excellence.

And that, in Hollywood for chrissake, for a long time we had exactly that (long before Williams and Goldsmith) and musical standards have been extremely high, it's just sad to see it go to such pragmatic levels of 'it works'.

Pssst, Richard, not to spoil the dream but i think Williams probably just wipes a crocodile tear now that he's out of this shallow enterprise (going by the book). And i honestly think it may be for the best as there hasn't been much beyond craft in those last Spielberg kiddie movies.

I know I'll get shot for saying this, but...can I venture another option: ditch Spielberg and Star Wars, and get back to some truly original scoring. Make his last years count, and don't waste them on tired kiddie-crap, franchises that have become moribund, and working for a 70-year-old director, who has absolutely nothing further to prove.
