  1. George Oldziey is running another Kickstarter campaign for a second volume of live orchestra recordings of his Wing Commander soundtracks:

The first (successful) campaign resulted in an amazing album, especially for someone like me, who played Wing Commander 3 for weeks when it got released. Its soundtrack got burned into my brain, so these recordings were exactly what I needed.

Here's a short documentary about that first campaign and its recording sessions:

And the FMVs? Wiggly smudgey upscales next to crisp 4k in-game backgrounds. EH.

While there were some shots in the video, where the animation cells where upscaled, they did get some crisp paint overs where detail was crucial (the eyes, for example). But then again there were other clips, like the opening panorama shot of Paris, where the background was a fully reworked high-res version of the painting, with stunning detail. So I guess wherever possible they rebuilt the cutscenes from scratch, while animation cells were too much work to re-paint completely. It doesn't look like simply upscaling the original compressed cutscenes was ever the plan (unless some material is missing completely).

That being said, the Kickstarter is still active, with the collected money ALSO utilized to further improve the remaster (and not just pay for the merch).

  3. I've been wondering: If there were proper LLL or Intrada releases of the Indy scores, would 2-CD sets of each one be enough, or does any of them warrant more discs? In case of a box set I've been thinking of Harry Potter, where the first movie got a 3-CD set. Would something like that be necessary for Indy?

Can't understand why, given the huge demand, this hasn't simply been released digitally long ago... I would have bought it immediately. I'm simply no longer willing to pay at least 50 € including shipping to Germany for one or two polycarbonate frisbees and then the package might end up at customs and I have to pay more and wait even longer. Anyway, after all these years, the best cues have already been unearthed in one form or another, albeit a little less... officially ;) That's quite enough for me.

I always order via the (German) Soundtrack Corner. Top Gun is €39.95 + €2.50 shipping.

Love those! I should get around to organizing my Emperor's Tomb sound files sometime to actually make a cohesive soundtrack. If anyone has any tips on that, that would be great.

Actually, about 20 years ago, I ran a website called LucasArts Soundtracks. For that I edited the complete music from the game (in fact, a rip from the Xbox version, as the audio files had a higher bitrate than the PC version) into a 2-CD album. I even used playthroughs of the game as a guide to make the track titles as sensible as possible.

That looks awesome! What titles did you come up for the track list?

I gave ChatGPT a description of the game, its locations and characters, and told it to come up with a soundtrack playlist in the style of Indiana Jones soundtrack releases. Then I edited it a bit afterwards :D

Damn in the trailer they didnt use any spanish dubber of harrison ford. He sounds like Hugh Jackman now...

Its great they use film quality professionals, but when the character is from a film, it doesnt work if you dont use a similar voice. The should try to hire impersonators like in the english versions.

Same in the German trailer, where they didn't use Harrison Ford's German voice actor Wolfgang Pampel (78), BUT: They've used Florian Clyde (40), who voiced Aaron Eldenreich in the Solo movie, and who - at least in Solo - managed an impressive impersonation of the young Wolfgang Pampel. It didn't work as well in this trailer, but either dialogue direction will get him there for the final game, or they'll hopefully use Pampel one last time (even at 78, it's just the German voice you associate with Ford, who he voiced since Star Wars).

  7. My story isn't nearly as heartfelt, as I just got it off eBay in the mid-2000s to add to my collection. If memory serves right, I got it for a meager 25 bucks or so. My actual first purchased SW album was the first Special Edition soundtrack (I vividly remember spotting the digipak version at our local electronics market - plus eagerly hunting down the other two in the coming months (which I, unfortunately, only got in their jewel case form).

I have a shorter playlist of Fallen Order that perhaps may help you appreciate the score a bit better.

Wow, thanks a lot! I had the same problem as well, with being a bit overwhelmed by the amount of music. But this is a beautiful 1-CD selection that flows like a well curated OST.

"A New Saber" is one hell of a swashbuckling track!

  9. I don't have many specific memories about the first film, though I totally remember the latino flair and bits and pieces from its action scenes. You know that feeling when you remember a movie not for its plot, but for some individual aspects, like how an actor looked in a costume (Banderas and the bandana/mask was so different from prior Zorro masks, and his "lower half of his face acting" was so good), or how a set design made you feel when watching it? Don't remember much about the story.

But even less so with the sequel, where I only remember it feeling like someone's let all the air out of an action-packed and exciting first film. It felt really depressing.
