‘The Sound of Music’ Soundtrack Due for Deluxe Expanded Reissue: Exclusive 
9/27/2023 Keith Caulfield The chart-topping film soundtrack to Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music will be reissued on Dec. 1 in an array of new expanded, remixed and remastered formats. Among them: a lavish Super Deluxe Edition boasting over 40 previously-unreleased tracks – 11 of which are never-before-heard alternate takes from the 1965 blockbuster movie.
One of those alternate takes is an unreleased rendition of the film’s opening number “Prelude / The Sound of Music,” by the film’s star Julie Andrews, and cast. The song is now available to stream and download (Sept. 27) — listen below.
And, for the first time, all of the Academy Award-winning film’s music – including every musical element from the movie – will be included on the Super Deluxe Edition of the album. Among those classic songs: “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”
The Sound of Music soundtrack spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1965 and was a near-constant presence in the top 10 from the spring of 1965 through the spring of 1967. It spent a staggering 109 weeks in the top 10 – the most of any soundtrack in the chart’s history. In 2015, Billboard ranked The Sound of Music as the most successful soundtrack of all time on the chart.
The Super Deluxe Edition of The Sound of Music will be available as either as a four-CD/one-Blu-ray audio boxed set or as a digital download album. The Blu-Ray audio disc contains the film’s full score in hi-resolution audio, as well as a new Dolby Atmos mix of the original 16-track soundtrack released in 1965.
The boxed set features new liner notes written by film historian and preservationist Mike Matessino, who remixed and remastered the album from the original multi-track tapes.
The Super Deluxe Edition is one of multiple new iterations of The Sound of Music that Craft Recordings will release on Dec. 1. (Craft is the catalog label for Concord.) The Sound of Music will also be reintroduced in a Deluxe Edition (on two-CDs) and a three-LP vinyl collection (including a “Picnic Meadow Green”-colored vinyl pressing limited to 500 copies worldwide). A standard edition of the album will also be refreshed, where the original 16-track 1965 soundtrack will be reissued digitally in standard digital, HD digital and in a Dolby Atmos mix. (The standard digital album will also be available in multiple non-English-language editions, including Spanish, German, French and Italian).

The seller *can* charge the VAT of the destination country if they like, to allow you to pay everything up front with less hassle. Amazon does, for example, and also Arrow Video. But if they do, they have to correctly declared the package so that it's marked as already taxed and isn't re-taxed by the customs office (and they have to pay the collected VAT to whoever collects that, obviously). DME's FAQ states that they cannot and do not charges taxes on international orders, but apparently they do (at least what I've seen so far has always seemed to match the VAT in the respective destination country) - but they don't declare it on the package, so effectively, they're just increasing the item price by the VAT amount and collecting the entire amount themselves (whether they keep the whole amount or pass on the extra bit I don't know), and then, because it's not officially taxed already, the destination country's customs office calculates the actual VAT based on that (already increased) final price and collects that (plus handling fees).

These Ghent albums are fantastic. It's almost like a modern continuation of Gerhardt's Classic Film Scores series.

Like Jurassic Park, John Williams did not compose any "true" concert arrangements that were recorded at their film's recording sessions.
 
For the first film, the OST album track "Theme From Jurassic Park" contains two short pieces he did record specifically for the album (heard from 0:00-0:48 and 3:15-end), but the entire middle of the track is the film cue "3M2 The Dinosaurs" - the exact same performance and mix as what you heard in "Journey to the Island".
 
He did later put together a concert arrangement of the film's themes, which he performed in concerts many times, recorded for the second Spielberg/Williams album, and recorded again at the sessions for The Lost World.
 
 
For The Lost World, the OST album track "The Lost World" is the music he wrote and recorded for the end credits.  Of course, it's a de facto concert arrangement, since it basically functions as the concert arrangement of the major new theme, despite being written for the end credits.
 
He would later revise the opening of this 3 times.  The first revision was recorded at The Lost World's sessions, under the name "End Credit Intro", and you can hear that opening the track "The Lost World (Alternate)"

A second revised opening was used in the sheet music that was published shortly afterward, and was conducted by Williams in London in 1998.  It was also used on Erich Kunzel's re-recording:
 
 
Some years later, he revised the opening again.  This 4th opening can be heard in the FSO re-recording:
 
 
 
 
 
The 10:15 length listed there is clearly an error.  It says 33 pages, which is correct and is just the usual 3 minute "The Lost World" track, but with the revised opening.
