  1. Saw the concert Sunday Mantinee, sat 3 rows from the 2 pianos for Chinatown. Was truly breathtaking to see the Maestro so closely. It was truly remarkable to see his expressions and subtle hand gestures. He puts his hand over his heart on a lot of the softer endings. You could truly feel the emotion in his work. It felt like being at a scoring session being in such an intimate setting. If you're anywhere near Southern Ca this is truly the experience of a lifetime.
  2. Saw the film today. Truly captivating and moving. The scene where BB leaves home to go to sea when his theme kicks in really moved me. Also when Daisy and BB look at themselves in her dance studio mirror very moving as well with the score.

  6. Have to agree as well, the scene when immediately creeped me out to Fire in the Sky. Little things like skin color and eyes, which are definatley less creepy in CGI were different. I've wondered for the past few days why Spielberg chose this versus the almost apelike appearance in War of the Worlds.

Future of film music definately not dead but has slowed tremendously since Casino Royale and Happy Feet, lately I recommend Varese Sarabande's new releases to the Astronaut Farmer and Nomad- which is very remeniscent of Conan the Barbarian. Also Meet the Robinsons sounds pretty good some clips at cinemusic.net, We also have Rataouille and if miracles can happen Order of the Phoenix. I'm probably one of the few who thinks Ottman's Silver Surfer has possibilities.
  13. Maestro Goldmith was clearly influenced by Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, specifically the chase cues in Nemesis. On another note someone in the film score industry advised me Horner lifted some Schumann almost directly and in the same key for Willow.

Your comment about the credit is true, however Ottman truly crafted a powerful and emotional score, his new theme for Superman was one of the only memorable melodies besides John Powell's work this year. This score is beautifully constructed and very respectful to Williams style. It is one of the best orchestrated scores since Davis' Matrix trilogy. If you aren't amazed by the Airplane crash cue I'd be shocked, each shot of film is memorably cued, it even fits perfectly with sound effects, something only Williams has truly mastered. I had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Ottman at a soundtrack signing event and he is a very humble person, who speaks to you like a regular person. I've read several interviews with him, Williams is his idol, also keep in mind he scored the film after months of also being the editor, a very exhausting process for those who know. He's Singer's editor on all of his films also. All in all I believe Ottman, Powell and Giacchino keep hope alive in me that there will still be orchestral film scores in the future.

I've tried to find pages with this info, so far www.musicfromthemovies.com has some listings, I recently rented the Omen, which has a great 10 min video with Marco Beltrami, one of my favorite rising composers. The director even says he didn't want to f#$% with Beltrami's score in his I believe scottish accent. I wish composers would get to do commentaries again, the last I found was Beltrami on Hellboy.
  17. I met Brian Tyler at a signing in Burbank, CA last spring, he signed probably twenty CD's between my friend and I, we even ended up in Dan Goldwasser's pics of the event. Tyler was extremely gracious and willing to sign everything. I became a fan of his after his suprisingly good, but unfortunate replacement to Timeline. I reminded him of his funny behind the scenes footage on the Timeline DVD he has a unique conducting style. The guy puts out five scores a year and is a fan of the full orchestra, he just needs an A picture, we almost had it with Constantine.

Seen the maestro 5 or 6 times Hollywood bowl since 1999, most memorable his birthday concert at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Feb a few years back, also I recommend if in Los Angeles visit the Henry Mancini Institute summer concert at UCLA's Royce HAll--where MOAG had recordings, last year I saw Giacchino, Newton Howard, and Alan Silvestri. Also at Masters of horror signing in Burbank met Brian Tyler, Christopher Young and Nathan Barr. There's another singing in several weeks John Powell is supposed to attend.--Check out www.soundtrack.net

  20. Sixth Oscar win in 2006--Goooooo Maestro, wish you the best, we're all rooting for you. Well at least he doesn't have to conduct the pit orchestra this time, so maybe that's a good thing.

Mines is the Tuba, hopefully most of you are familiar, Mr. Williams tends to hire Jim Self, a Los Angeles local who has several CD's and most notably is the mothership in CE3k, raptor theme in JP and has the memorable solos in feast scene in Hook. Check out his website www.jimself.com, he also runs Tubachristmas in LA. This guy makes a tuba sound as heartwrenching as a french horn. His CD changing colors is truly remarkable.

I saw Kong Weds night, the theater was pretty full, the opening scenes in New York were perfect, but 2/3 of the scenes on the Venture almost made me feel I should walk out, aside from an awesome performance by Serkis as lumpy. Once they get to the Island this is the closest to cinematic perfection I've seen since the LOTR trilogy. The only poor effect was the dinosaur stampede, which ironically had the best action score, which was drowned out by effects. This scene is so ridiculous it's almost laughable, but it's also extremely fun. Kong's full reveal made the hair on my neck standup, it was like you were watching a real animal, it was great because the audience responded to him well laughing and such, this leads to the trex fight which is hands down the most realistic CG effects put on screen to date. This scene will make you want to go back 3 more times to see the movie. Also the bug scene had the most disturbing and realistic creatures, especially these pink tube worms. Kong's capture was beautifully choreographed also; the scenes when he's on the loose in NYC were tremendously fun, but didn't blow me away like Skull Island. Probably the greatest achievement is the silent love scenes between Kong and Darrow; Kong’s facial acting is exactly on par with Watt's. I have to see this movie at least two more times just to take it all in. The Empire State finale will be remembered for a long time including Howard's Kong theme. I didn't tear up because I was analyzing the score and awe inspiring effects, but if you let the film wash over you it's pretty tough not to be moved. Overall this is a classic film and well worth the ticket price, score CD purchase and likely 4 disc DVD. Can't wait for the Hobbit.
  23. I live in the southern end of the San Fernando Valley aka "the Valley" in Southern California. Along a famous main street of this area known as Ventura Blvd. I've seen at least 7 billboards in a 5-mile stretch of road. In fact every billboard is only for Munich and no other films. Also this area has a large population of the Judaist faith, in fact even Hasidic. It seems Spielberg may be targeting an audience; it's weird because this is the 1st film I've seen with so many billboards in a small area. I have nothing against this; it's just unusual, wondering if the same is happening in Europe and other parts of the States.
  24. How's it going everybody? This is the 2nd time I'm writing this post, the system lost my post after I submitted. Anyway, Memoirs was great, it was visually stunning and decently acted Michelle Yeoh and Gong Li really stand out, Zhang Ziyi looked phenomal, but her voice acting wasn't quite there for me. The film opens with Track 2 and the first memorable cue we hear is Going to School, this is beautifully shot and the cue is very reminiscent of Jim's New Life. Next we have Brush on Silk which was poorly used and extremely muted except for the last minute of the cue. You can barely hear the koto in the beginning, this scene is great Gong Li tricks Sayuri into "Brushing on fine fabric", which segues into the first of many brutal whippings endured by Sayuri. After this we get Chiyu's prayer and Finding Satu, not memorable but fits well. Next is a great use of the Chairman's Waltz, where the Chairman meets Sayuri for the 1st time. After this is a change of seasons and a change to Zhang Ziyi as Sayuri, my main complaint is her eyes don't match the young Sayuri. After much training we get Sayuri's big debut in Becoming a Geisha, this cue was my favorite, it Williams in his rhythmic groove, you just want this scene to go on forever. After this is much koto playing, which isn't on the CD and will make a great complete score project for King Mark. After a lot of dancing and schmoozing comes Dr. Crab's prize, the solo amazingly captures the heartwrenching inner pain that Sayuri is feeling. Great musicianship by Ms. Ishigure, we can see now why Williams got the Shakahuri in his pocket from her performance. After this is non memorable track 12 and 13 which lead into the Fire Scene, I advise to listen to this cue closely, it fits the scene very well, especially the Japanese vocalist and heart aching Chairman's theme towards the end. The rest of the score worked well but didn't stand out. Once again I say hat's off to our Maestro for writing a truly wonderful score, hope everyone sees this on the big screen.

I was in blockbuster today and the clerk there told me he's going to a test screening of Meoirs at the AMC Promenade 16 in Woodland Hills, California, north of Los Angeles, curious if there are any southern California posters online. This also would be a great covert op for recording the score, as far as we know this score was recorded early september. Hopefully someone else in the area can catch this, it's at 7:30 PM weds Oct 12.
