What does JWfan think of Edelman's Gettysburg?
Dean1700 replied to Indiana_Fett's topic in General Discussion
I don't believe any movie can work successfully without music and there will always be a level of emotion in music. It is unavoidable. Watch The Birds. Good point. In general, Jedimaster, I agree with you that cinema has almost always required musical accompaniment, but when you get down to individual films, this varies. I find that some films are much better without musical accompaniment. Also, are you referring to score, or just music at all? Have you seen the works of Bergman, Allen, Truffaut, or Kurosawa? All of them have made movies without any score at all. Ted My initial post about no music was for an entire score. If I have seen a movie without music then I don't remember it although I have seen some/most of The Birds but many years ago. It is also a failing on my part not having seen any Bergman, Allen, Truffaut, or Kurosawa films. But being brought up on Spielberg films and others it no surprise. It would be strange watching a film without music, since when I watch movies that is something I am listening out for at the same time, although I know some scenes work best without it. -
For me it is Han and Her Worshipfullness

What does JWfan think of Edelman's Gettysburg?
Dean1700 replied to Indiana_Fett's topic in General Discussion
My understanding is that it was a "made for TV" movie but in the booklet of the deluxe version there is a note by the director, Ronald Maxwell, that was issued at the film's premier SCREENING. This tells me that it was a theatrical release but it is possible that it had a limited run in cinemas before going straight to TV. You are correct in that the film is not about patriotism but I disagree about the music being "inspirational or feel good". When I listen to the music in some cases I find it sad along with the scenes that the music belongs to. To think that those men could fight a war, walking into the fire of the enemy the way they did then is tragic. But you have to remember that these men WERE brave souls, on both sides, to do what they did and the music should reflect that fact as well. Do you think that the Battle of Little Round Top should be more subdued? Do you believe that heroic music should not be used in a scene depicting an almost no win situation for a regiment of men who, with almost no ammunition, many wounded/dead men and a Commanding Officer with almost no professional military training, charge into the face of an oncoming enemy and routing them in what historians recall as one of the defining moments in the Civil War? How could you NOT have heroic music. Heroic/feel good music should be used as the scene requires but you can still acheive a score that reflects the tragedy at the same time. I don't believe any movie can work successfully without music and there will always be a level of emotion in music. It is unavoidable. -

The Deluxe version does not have ALL the music as there is still some very good music missing. If you can rip it from the DVD let me know as I'd like to know how you did it (ie what programs you used). This is one of my all time favourite scores. I especially the music to the battle scenes like Battle For Little Round Top. A fantastic addition to anyones collection. -
Patience? Don't talk to me about patience. I've got tons of patiences. Now where the hell is the CD for christ sakes!!!!! tic

I'll define heroic. Doing something extraordinary that ordinarily would not be done. Eowyn vs. Witch King. "For Frodo" Merry and Pippin (the first to charge into battle) at the Black Gate. I wouldn't say Ripley taking on the Bitch in the power loader but definitely Ripley heading into the sub-level's to save Newt. And death doesn't automatically mean heroic either because I don't think Capt Miller's death is heroic. More tragic than anything else. On the other hand Obi-Wan's death is heroic as it is one of self sacrifice.

I agree, and Jerry's introverted score fits the character like a jock strap. I like the last two films, but there's something a bit more personal and gritty about the first film, despite its occasional lapses in believability and logic. That is because in the first movie he is a person with flaws like anyone. In the next two films he is not. But musically you cant beat FB and R:FB2.

I'm missing something: Why is Goldsmith great?
Dean1700 replied to Vaderbait1's topic in General Discussion
I have been looking at getting this one as well. I will get it one day. -
As far as the movies go I enjoy First Blood more than the later two films and this also applies to the music as well. The way I see it the character of John Rambo in films 2 and 3 is completely different. A totally different person just with the same name. In First Blood John Rambo is a very trouble veteran whose return to civilian life is interrupted by a small town cop who takes an automatic dislike to him, completely unlike the near invincible, super warrior in the other two films who also happens to be at peace with himself (which is a complete contradiction of the character)!

Because most of the Disney sequels are made on the cheap and usually direct to video/DVD. Personally there are very few good Disney sequels to their animated films. I think the best one was The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride. The story goes had the executives known it was going to be so good, due in part to the animation (which was done here in Sydney) they would have released it at the theatres. There is a definite disparity in the quality of animation between the originals and the sequels.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. Rutger Hauer as John Ryder in The Hitcher "You useless waste"

It also happened at Elstree Studios when Stanley Kubricks The Shining was being filmed. This was the same stage that TESB was to be filmed in and the full scale falcon set was days away from being assembled. Filming for TESB then moved to another stage.

Lloyd Bridges as President Benson (Hot Shots Pt 2)

Without a doubt Gladiator. The tracks I love the most are the first 10 minutes of the film, Barbarian Horde and the Elysium theme.

Tora Tora Tora was never revered in any way shape of form, it was a box ofice failure, which got luke warm reviews. I've seen it, the film really is not actually all that good. The American actors all act like they are in a chear TV production without any kind of conviction or even effort. The special effects are good for it's day, but you can still see too often that they are blowing up model boats. The Japanese parts of the film (filmed by a completely different director and crew) is by far the best part of the film. And of course it has a very effective Goldsmith score. True, the film is not revered but it is considered the most accurate acount of the events of the day. Part of the reason why this film was not the success it could have been was because it was released when the US was still heavily involved in Vietnam. So naturally public sentiment for a war film was at an all time low. And it was not restricted to films either. Jeff Shaara's Pulitzer prize winning novel The Killer Angels, later filmed as Gettysburg, and published during the Vietnam War was not a great commercial success either despite it winning one of the most prestigious literary awards in the world. However a few years earlier in Britain the war film Battle of Britain opened in spectacular style and was an instant success but this would have been partly due to England not being involved in any armed conflict anywhere.

POTC1 2CD Complete? Anyone know about this?
Dean1700 replied to Dean1700's topic in General Discussion
I have asked a question about sound quality though and if there is anything to make me think the sound quality is anything less than perfect. Even though there is 8 hours before it closes I do still hope for an answer by then. -
Ok I am not looking for smart ass remarks here from the "Zimmer haters" but have found this on Ebay due to finish in 8 hours, a 2CD complete version of POTC1. Whats the story? He claims there is no FX or voices either? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...em=190011083058

I'm talking about the international cut of Superman only.
-
As I keep saying, the majority of the time it's 'Region 1 only crap'. Out of probably 100-130 isolated scores out there, only about 10 or so are R2 only. Most are R1, and some are all regions. And I'd forgotten they had even made IG:2. Don't understand why only R4 gets the iso either. It can't be budgetary reasons and surely it would sell more to people like us as it blatantly wouldn't get a score CD. Yeah, I don't know why we we're so lucky in getting this one either!
-
Times. I want running times!!!! Will this new release of Superman beat my 1986 video copy of 170 plus minutes or not? So far since it's first release onto video in the mid 80's this movie has had 3 different running times. 129 minutes 137 minutes 146 minutes (current release) I will not buy this DVD until they produce a complete version longer than my own video copy!
-
What is with all this "Region 2 only" crap? Maybe the heading for this topic should of read "Isolated Scores By Regions" and asking members to list the movies by their regions because what may have an isolated score in one Region may also be isolated in another. These DVD's have isolated scores in REGION 4 that I know of (we do have isolated scores too you know!!!) A Bug's Life Contact Mars Attacks Beetlejuice Corpse Bride The Last Of The Mohicans Alien (20th Anniversary Edition) Inspector Gadget 2 Witches of Eastwick Patton (Special Edition) Hollowman LA Confidential Bridge On The River Kwai Superman The Movie There are others that also have scores with over running commentary as well but don't know any of these ones.

john williams is awesome and so is hans zimmer!
Dean1700 replied to sweethaley85's topic in General Discussion
I've avoided every Zimmer thread until now because I didn't want to partake in all the Zimmer bashing that goes on here. I'll admit to liking some of Zimmers scores such as The Lion King, Crimson Tide, and Gladiator. I tend to think that most people don't like him because he shares the responsibility of writing scores with others (Klaus Badelt) and he relies more on synths than traditional orchestras. I base my appreciation of Zimmer on what the score sounds like rather than how it was made and who it was made with. I even just bought POTC 2 because I have always enjoyed hearing Jack Sparrow's main cue. I just need POTC 1 now. -
Spot on, Alex. But I also think Anthony Hopkins did quite well, especially during the Supreme Court speech. Still doesn't beat Hannibal Lector though.

I think Morgan Freeman was miscasted badly because his role didn't suit his acting ability
