The music in Gladiator was embarrasing for the most part. It being a hit soundtrack with the masses only confirms this. When Hans said (to Ridley or producers) you need a real composer for Gladiator they should've listen to him. I think it does take balls to ask Zimmer. Overall, the shere lameness in soundtracks made me jump from film music to 20th century contemporary composers. Still, I will always like Williams. What can I say, I'm a fan. ( play corny Zimmer theme to underline the last sentence) ----------------- Alex Cremers

Do you always want the same cliché, dressed in black, mean and imposing looking evil guys you have seen in almost all other movies? Did the film failed in the eyes of the audience or the critics because the enemy failed as a character? Would you believe me if I told you that not all evil is scary or impressive in appearance? Yes, the Luthor gang had a light comical undertone but in the end Lex always wants something and that wanting is eventually going to cost many innocent people's lives and he's dangerous because he is smart enough or always has some kind of resource to pull it off. Hackman portrayed Luthor in a very unique and interesting way. I'm happy he wasn't the typical slick bad*** MF evil dude we've seen too many times in the past decades. He had a voice of his own and I will remember him for it. ---------------- Alex Cremers

Thanks, Ted. I'm glad you saw that. All I said was that Star Wars had changed with ROTJ (pssst, that's not a prequel, Ted) and suddenly people start throwing names at me. Why can't these people get over themselves? Oh, why? ---------------- Alex Cremers

I confess I liked the theme from Lois and Clark. ---------------- Alex Cremers

At least I'm no Lucas apostle who swallows everything this man presents. I might have a small mind but it's a mind of my own. ---------------- Alex Cremers

I dont need to give "excuses," for my thoughts and feelings. They are what they are, and I most certainly will not give you that "that's your opinion," first of all because it is the most annoyingly overused cliche on this Board that prevents any and all intelligent discussion from ever happening, and secondly because it is most often solely used as just way out, and it is really bothersome. Ted You got it.

I don't remember that one. How did that go again? Movie not so good though! ---------------- Alex Cremers

Wow, you think very highly of yourself, Merkel. I wish I had your confidence and self esteem. ---------------- Alex Cremers

OK, I think it all ends with John Williams. How long are we waiting for the next filmscore God to arrive? If I get in touch with my surroundings I foresee he/she will not come. Don't you feel it too? Elfman is a fraud! The others too. They use gimmicks and 8 French horns to impress the audiences. If Williams dies, the world will finally realize, even more then now, what he stood for. ---------------- Alex Cremers

Ted wrote: If you watch some Star Wars shorts on TFN Fanfilms then George is still a genius. If you watch ROTJ you feel Star Wars is taking a U-turn both in style and audience targeting. The deterioration was already apparent in The Original Trilogy. Don't you know this? And don't give me that "that's your opinion" excuse! Here there are no opinions, just facts. Open your eyes and save Star Wars from George Lucas. He once knew the way but that was a long, long time ago. He use to be cool (really cool, see THX 1138, that man was ice!) but now lost his grip, his eye of the tiger. Franchise Star Wars to new, fresh and eager talent. Write other and better stories. Wait for computers and programmers that can handle CGI and Star Wars will be alive, even long after we are gone. ---------------- Alex Cremers

Yes but you could have saved your honor by saying that you couldn't pay for it until November (when it was originally planned) and not two weeks earlier. You just don't have any money in October. Then everybody would've agreed with your first post and no harm would've been done. Unfortunately, things went a bit different and now it's too late. Oh Marc, what have you done?! I'll pray for you. ---------------- Alex Cremers

I believe that is good news, not bad. ---------------- Alex Cremers

The original always makes the most impact. (Except for those people who start watching later when Star Wars was no longer Star Wars, of course) ---------------- Alex Cremers

Is there any proof that Williams is an important composer?

Somebody else got a problem with that? Huh? Nah, I didn't think so. Now don't bring it up again, you hear! ---------------- Alex Cremers

What shoud've happened... Potential buyer: "What's this music then?" Ocelot: Well, that is... Williams, John Williams." Potential buyer: Ahem! You mean (ahem, cough), him from Star Wars fame??? Ocelot: Yea...Nooooo! Nononono! Haha! Not HIM! I mean the OTHER John Williams! You know? The one from Australia? Potential buyer: Really? Ocelot: He's not bad, isn't he? Potential buyer: Not bad??? It's the best I've heard all week! Ocelot: Here, that will be £12.90 , sir. ...And the HMV salesman of the month is...OCELOOOOT!!! ---------------- Alex Cremers -
You are confusing popcorn films with bad films. Neil How disapointing. No, I'm not confusing anything here. Popcorn films are here for one reason: Sit back, relax, don't think, eat popcorn and enjoy the ride. 99% of American movies today are made with this philosophy in mind. All I meant was, while most popcorn flicks are forgettable( it's in their nature, they are build that way), others had a greater impact. So much so, that we even speak of them today, eventhough some of them are getting a respectable age. What went wrong (don't interpret wrong negative) with a few of them? Why aren't they forgotten? For Pete's sake, there are crowdy websites about them! Is there a website/forum about every popcorn movie? I don't think so. Now don't disappoint me again, Lieutenant Neil! ---------------- Alex Cremers

No, I'm not. (I can be as brief as you) ---------------- Alex Cremers

OTOH, popcorn film aren't suppose to last and should be forgotten by the next day. What went wrong? ---------------- Alex Cremers

Ask your professor if he can write a better theme for Superman or Star Wars (give him a VHS copy). If the answer is that he can't but Mozart and Wagner could have, then we have proof that Williams is in the same leaque of the ones he admires. ---------------- Alex Cremers -
Williams cues that sounds like absolutely nothing else....

And with the more or less same brass accents? I don't think there are still composers using the distinctly eighths ostinato in the low register with more or less the same brass accents anymore in fear of quoting Jaws which is recognized by the general audience pure for its rhythm and orchestration. And this is where Sacre (Dances des adolescentes) has a noticeable resemblance. ---------------- Alex Cremers
