  1. Exactly. And to think his behavior was even rewarded with an Oscar.
  2. About CODA, I heard it was the new favorite of the bookies and it appears they were right. Because of current troubling times, Hollywood wanted a feel-good movie to win.
  3. No politics, please!
  4. I'm glad you said Buggles and not The Buggles, Richard.
  5. Me AC1, not Drax, or one of his clones.
  6. Deep Water (2022) Adrian Lyne's latest erotic thriller starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas (photo) starts fairly entertaining but gets ridiculous in the second part. 4/10
  7. I finally know which band used the same riff too, Marian. Buggles! Needless to say they didn't come up with it.
  8. I stopped watching Cyrano because it looked terrible. It's possible that the TV channel that aired it had a terrible copy. I could hardly see a thing, which is a problem, because I happen to think film is a visual medium. Crazy, right?
  9. "We all have our individual interests, of course."
  10. If there's an HBO show that might come close to Game Of Thrones ratings, it has to be this one.
  11. How odd that Mads Mikkelsen isn't in this movie!
  12. It's deliciously enlarged or heightened, just like Cape Fear. I think there might be something that makes these two directors different. Before he was chasing Oscars, Scorese was already known for making serious movies. He was a very well-respected and established 'serious' director who just didn't win Oscars. OTOH, Spielberg was exclusively known for someone who knew how to make entertaining, crowd-pleasing movies, and he possibly wanted to prove to himself he was more than that. When Empire Of The Sun was released, the audience and critics reacted indifferently and confused. That to me says Spielberg made Empire Of The Sun for himself, not for anybody else. It's a movie that needs multiple viewing to fully appreciate what is going on or to understand the imagery. Today many critics say it's his overlooked masterpiece and I agree. If you're going for the Oscars, don't throw something in the water that confuses the fish, make a movie that everybody understands from the get-go, like Schindler's List.
  13. Again, I'm talking about style, not the story or the subject. I don't know what you mean by "required" but as far as I know, nothing forces a director to uphold an old-fashioned style or vision. Even though it is technically impressive, stylistically, Spielberg's version could have been made a long time ago (lens flares included). Even the film stock looked old (probably because it's 35mm low light film).
  14. It had Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel-Day Lewis. Things can't get more Oscar bait than that. - Super cast - Well-respected director - History - Epic
  15. Of course, I was talking about the style, not the topic. However, looking at Rotten Tomatoes, it seems that it's actually the naysayers who are living in a bubble and who are completely isolated from what arouses modern audiences and critics. Tomatometer: 92% Audience Score: 94% (!) What a world! What a world!
  16. I will, because one of the google results says:
  17. It seems that you crave more for winning an Oscar statuette than me because you have 2150 results. Point is countless of people either expected or deemed it to be Oscar bait so it's really not so bizarre. Those who loved it will say it's not Oscar bait.
  18. That's nothing compared to 'Silence + Oscar bait' which got 8. 650.000 results.
  19. That surprised me the most, how unbelievably old-fashioned it was. It's as if Spielberg is completely out of touch with everything.
  20. That's not the impression I have. At a certain point Scorese stopped making personal movies and concentrated on movies that would have a wide appeal and that were more eligible for winning Oscars (The Aviator, Shutter Island, The Departed, ... ) Maybe you guys didn't see it that way but I did.
  21. Perhaps it's because Silence looks like my out of date definition of Oscar bait. Perhaps that was Scorese's mistake? So if I google for Scorsese's Silence + Oscar bait I will get zero results? Surely it's not difficult to answer? Or is it? Why not?
