This opening (00:00 - 01:18) would make great film music.

Some more nice albums with ethnic influences mixed with Western tradition:
Memoirs Of A Geisha by John Williams
The Last Emperor by Ruychi Sakamoto and David Byrne
The Sheltering Sky by Ruychi Sakamoto
China by Vangelis (officially not a soundtrack but I don't care about that)

I think you are ripe for one of those classical boards for elitists that piss on John Williams. Somehow you are getting very close to their level. No, you are worse than them. Classical elitists can appreciate McCartney's pop writings.

I just recorded a cover (albeit very different) of one of his songs, Richard, namely, River Man, one of his best songs ever.
Now don't tell me that you think it's just a so-so song and that all his other songs are much better because I'm getting tired of this, Richard! You hear me?!

It's necessary if you want to avoid an overdose of 'weightiness' and if you want to put things in context or into perspective. Listening to the score makes me understand the comment "Interstellar crushes under its own weight". If this mood is felt throughout the film, scene after scene, then I know I will start throwing bricks to the screen after a while. Listen to Nolan's role model, 2001: ASO, the mood changes constantly from horror (Ligeti) to lightness (Strauss II) to loneliness (Kahaturian) to wonder (Richard Strauss).

Yesterday I listened to the Interstellar score on spotify. I was really surprised (you could sell this as The Tree Of Life music) but after a while I felt it could do with some frivolous woodwinds. I mean, it's always the same emotion. No wonder people say "It's a religious experience". It's as if the music is constantly saying: "This... is ... important."

I thought the white dress was way sexier, Steef! Especially when she was held in the cell.

A 100% of what the multiplexes play is not a "tiny fraction".
Thor, you always say there is no difference, whether it's Blade Runner or Body Of Lies. Or Alan Parsons' Mystery And Imagination or Gaudi. I simply see and hear way too much differences to believe that. Wearing top hats is no longer in fashion either so people are correct when they say the top hat is no longer a part of our street scene.
Finding an occasional oboe solo in experimental films, small independent films (do they even have the money for real musicians?) or student films is not the same.
So people don't agree that classical woodwinds have been replaced by ethnic woodwinds? Strange, because that's all I hear.

Interesting, that scoreless version of Gravity. It should make the movie better. Is there also a dialogue-less version?

With my modest and realistic expectations (not to be confused with Mike Oldfield's 'Incantations'), I can only be pleasantly surprised.

I think Dogville did several things very well. Mainly, I loved how the perspective changed from 'idealistic' to 'hell' and how 'lines' became 'sets'.

    And the photography, of course.
BTW, I try not to see it as a true representation of provincial mentality in America.

2001: ASO didn't need restoring. The movie have been preserved exceptionally well. The terms "digitally restored" and "remastered" are selling techniques.
