Digital Noise Reduction? Sure, turn it off!

A24 reacted to Incanus in GAME OF THRONES
He always does it very well. Especially aristocratic authority. And he is particularly wonderful as Tywin Lannister and I am so glad they expanded his role compared to the books and fleshed him out. When I first read the novels I remember thinking that he would be an awesome Tywin Lannister and lo and behold he was cast in the role. Apparently somebody in the GoT team thought the same.

This Russian horror sci-fi looks like a David Fincher movie.

A24 got a reaction from bruce marshall in What is the last Television series you watched?
A typical reaction for those who deem it a Black Mirror clone.

I actually thought the opening scene was the strongest in the entire picture. My problem is that his films want to be frustrating. Like watching someone walk into a trap and yelling at them not to. Rather than fearing for them (since you are always clued into the danger as an objective bystander), you are only frustrated that they can't discern what's up. Nothing wrong with frustration. I just think you can rarely float a movie on it unless you build it into the premise. The movie Child's Play does this very well, although it is not that scary. But watching the child protest and protest while no one believes him is far more effective in context than what Aster tries to maintain for 2+ hours, which is have an entire film function as one long gaslight.

It feels like a Glen A. Larson show.

I would even go as far to say that we associate those classical selections with the movie and no longer with the concert hall.
I do think that, on its own, it's an incredible score.

The look Fincher used for Social Network, Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl and then continued with his House of Cards episodes has been aped by a lot of the streaming services these days. Most streaming dramas tend to be 2:1 these days

I don't see why some directors are against an actual musical score. Scores are supposed to enhance a film's emotions and accentuate the storytelling. I get it if they don't want to use a score, but going for needle drops (like Scorsese and Tarantino) is just laziness.
And they cost more.

A24 reacted to KK in What is the last Television series you watched?
I checked the first three episodes out and remain unconvinced. The plots are utterly predictable, with half-assembled characters that take an entire hour to catch up to the obvious twist that you foresaw within the first 5 minutes. And the visual language is just not strong enough to justify these ponderous “meditations” (if that’s what they want to call it). The opening narration of the third episode sounded like a cringey Malick imitation, with none of the style or substance to sustain it. And no, the Philip Glass-lite arpeggios don’t succeed in making it any more “artsy”. I mean, it might all work if these individual stories didn’t feel like they were written by teenagers who just saw the Twilight Zone and wanted to try their hands on it.
I don’t think I’ll be continuing. Just stick to Black Mirror.

It's good that you weren't in charge of Joker then. Tod Phillips' approach clearly struck a chord with critics and audiences. Perhaps they did pick up and appreciate its gritty social commentary.

Columbo is all you need anyway.

I need to watch The Last Emperor again. So many, many visually incredible scenes. I bought and checked the European Blu-ray, but I didn't like the way it looked, so I refuse to watch it.

A24 reacted to Naïve Old Fart in Best-Scored Films
A film that is once seen, never forgotten.
Alex, this is an absolutely perfect example of the thread title. The songs form an integral part of the narrative, being both incidental, and source music, and reflecting the characters' emotions.
Let's face it: most scores can sound great with a film, but very few manage to get under the skin (no pun intended, Jay) of a film.
STAR WARS; TITANIC; LORD OF THE RINGS; BATMAN; E.T. they all sound great with their accompanying images, but on their own they are just aural cotton-candy; throwaway, and completely inconsequential.
A truly great score becomes enmeshed in its film in an almost subconscious way. It becomes part of the fabric of the film.
SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER is one of those scores.

A24 reacted to Koray Savas in Which of these late 2000s flicks I never saw should I finally catch up with?
I voted Revolutionary Road for both, but it ultimately depends on what type of genre you're in the mood for. The Road and The Reader are also good films/scores I would recommend checking out at some point.
