pete reacted to GerateWohl in What was your first encounter with Jerry Goldsmith?
Why am I asking this? Because for me this wasn't love at first sight.
Since the age of 11 I was visiting record stores and scrolling through the soundtrack department.
I was the greatest Star Wars fan on earth and a big science fiction fan, too.
So I recognized the compoer name on records like Alien or Star Trek TMP, which probably was the first movie with a Goldsmith score, that I had ever seen.
Later I saw Logran's Run (on TV) and Gremlins. But his scores more or less did their job.
Different from John Williams, who's scores made me immediately want to listen to them outside the movie.
Tbh, the first time I actually recognized the Goldsmith Star Trek theme was at the title credits of the Star Trek Next Generation TV Show, so little of an impression it made on me, when I watched the movie.

I neither watched Alien nor The Omen or Poltergeist. I was too young at the time.
The score that made me want to dig deeper into his work was "Legend".
I bought the record more or less by the cover.
I had iked The Last Unicorn, this was again a fantasy story with unicorns and a red bull, I like Ridley Scott's previous movie "Bladerunner", so I was hooked and really fell in love with the score. Luckily I didn't watch the movie at that time.

For a long time Legend was the only Goldsmith score I owned. Finally a broader interest in Goldsmith was woken up by my first discussions with two other movie score conaisseurs, which I met in my 20s. Studs Lonigan, the two Poltergeists, The Omen, Mom and Dad Save the World, Total Recall, Planet of the Apes and a big deal was later L.A. Confidential. And the Alien expansion.

Still I would say, that I admire much of his music, but I don't necessarily love it.
Overall I would call his movie music brillantly operational.

    Or to say it differently:

Is he one of my favourite composers? No.
s he one of my favourite movie composer? Yes.

I’m loving it. Each episode seems to “fly by” in what feels like 5 minutes. And I have been enjoying the music more - there have been a few scenes where the music really stood out for me in a good way in recent episodes.

i haven’t seen Band of Brothers since it was released, so it’s been a while but I really think the quality is similar.

I'd love to hear pieces based on the seven note melodies that Williams prefered over the five-note CE3k signal! I'd heard the story before, but it just struck how many unused precious gems could be found on scraps of paper in Williams' office and in linen cupboards in his home.

But it's fascinating to know of Spielberg's influence regarding musical decisions: combining and using the two Indy melodies. the preference for Remembrances and Schindler's List theme as the score's main theme, and keeping the CE3K signal to five notes. And Spielberg urging Williams to conduct the ET finale without looking at the footage. There must be so many other examples - decisions from every score I'm sure - where one influenced/nudged the other to achieve the results we all know and love. All without ever having an argument. I think they must have the most trusting and respectful relationship between two humans in the history of the world!

I'll love the upcoming doc and book - that's just a given, but I would really love to be able to learn of more similar examples.

Oh I remember that answer in the other thread, I was curious about which single one you picked in this second round @Marian Schedenig.

    Check these out:

Here's the point, in two tracks:
Perfectly good! I think it works well in the film and is probably Jarre's best all-synth score.

But this later orchestral arrangement I enjoy listening to much more on album:

This I 100% agree with you on; it was my #1 choice too. The synth trilogy would be my last pick of these four options but I still would love to hear it and I think it's worth doing.

Oh, Leigh still plans on doing it! He just wrote this in the FSM poll thread an hour or two ago:
    (bolding emphasis mine)

And even that's not guaranteed. It's just a possibility. These polls might determine what Leigh starts tackling before Lionheart, or they might determine what he starts after Lionheart. He just endorsed my doing the polls because he was in a bit of limbo land with the Lionheart plans, and wanted to take the temperature of Goldsmith fans on what else they wanted.

Oops, Yavar clarified here that other projects would come first.

pete reacted to Holko in AI music scam impersonating composers
So I was listening to my usual Tidal playlist of weekly new release recommendations and I came across some weird albums by known but not huge film composers (Broughton, Debney, McNeely, Badelt), all with nondescript titles, 3 tracks not recorded with a real orchestra, with obviously AI generated covers. I couldn't find anything about any of them except for the streaming/youtube uploads, nothing on the composers' sites, no news about them. The Youtube uploads are not on the composers' own Topic channels, but on "Release - Topic", and all attributed to the Vietnamese "OnlyStar Music" production company.

What can be done about this if it's some larger scale scam?

All Williams concert coming up in Seoul on March 23. No choir, but I've always wanted to hear Duel of the Fates without the choir... not that I dislike the choir. I think Williams has performed it a couple of times sans choir.
This kind of makes up for missing out on the Japan concerts! It'll certainly be cheaper since I live a $1 bur ride from the venue, and the tickets I'm getting are $30!

Weird finishing the Harry Potter suite with Aunt Marge's Waltz, but I can live with that.

Generally when a piece such as this is commissioned for a particular performer, that performer is the only artist allowed to play the piece in public for a certain amount of time. I don’t know that that’s the case here, but it very well could be.

At any rate, I’ll be at the Chicago concert. If anyone here attends, come say hi!

The prequel was formally announced in April 2023. The series will be written and executive-produced by Martin and Ira Parker. Ryan Condal, who currently serves as House of the Dragon‘s showrunner, and Vince Gerardis also will be EPs.

“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros,” the previously released official logline reads. “A young, naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall” (aka Dunk) “and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.
