  1. It's always nice to have some expendable red-shirts around. Frogurt's "death by heart burn" (as it was described in The Transmission podcast) was one of the more enjoyable death scenes in a while!

  2. Yes, Juliet is consistently enigmatic. I love that about her character; no matter how close you get to her, there's always more to her than you know. She returned to form in a way tonight, speaking fluent Latin all of a sudden, taking charge of matters, and hinting at knowing more than she's letting on. I was glad because last week she took more of a back seat and didn't seem to acting very Juliet-ish.

  3. I know, it just jogged my memory and I thought it would be a silly thing to find meaning in

EDIT: Oh yeah, I thought it was cool that Widmore seems to actually be putting some trust in Desmond by asking him to keep Penny hidden (presumably since Ben has at this point already vowed to kill her).

  4. Spoilers from episodes that have already aired don't need to be hidden, but I think theories or guesses should be (

like the Mrs. Faraday=Ms. Hawking one

). Not that most people haven't already thought about that, but just the same.

Anyway, terrific episode! I found it amazing that it turns out Locke was the reason Alpert visited him as a newborn and then as a toddler....and kid Locke recognized the compass as his! I was surprised at Juliet's apparent knowledge of Richard's history and age. And does everyone else think he was referring to Jacob when he mentioned answering to someone? Are we to assume that Richard was already on the island before the Brits? As usual, so many questions....but it was really done well, and I didn't even miss the O6 storyline.

Oh and did anyone else think back to Boone's nanny when we were introduced to the ailing Theresa? ("Theresa falls up the stairs, Theresa falls down the stairs..."). A major connection, I'm sure. :P

EDIT: Okay, you guys are too quick for me...

  5. Haven't heard all of them, but Button has made a good impression on me after a few listens and hearing it in the film. It's an interesting and definitely listenable mix of restrained emotion and whimsical charm. I particularly enjoy how Desplat seems to score most scenes as if they're a montage, with the music constantly moving and not always matching specific sync points in the film.

  6. Listened to Defiance. I'm liking it a bit more. There's one theme in it that I really, really, like. Haven't been able to stop humming it.

It's been growing on me as well. There are definitely a few themes I've noticed, so I'm not really sure where the accusations of it being themeless came from (the promo download maybe?). One I particularly like is featured in "Camp Montage" and the final track...simply gorgeous. And Bell's violin work is wonderful throughout, though I can't help but think it a tad redundant for JNH after using Hilary Hahn in a similar manner for The Village. In any case, I think it's pretty well-deserving of its Oscar nomination.

And regarding The Final Conflict, I've just been getting into The Omen scores (gotta love Amazon's price for the trilogy boxed set), and they're pretty damn amazing. I've only listened to each score once through, but I'd say my favorite at this point is the third. The music conveys such a compelling struggle between good and evil. And yeah, "The Hunt" kicks ass.

  7. Hmm...LostPedia also says that he asked to be written off the show after losing both his parents in 2005. In any case, I did like his character and it'd be cool to see him again sometime. Though like most of the characters, his flashbacks had started to get a little stale.

  8. Maybe I'm too easily pleased, but I just love it when earlier parts of the show get revisited in appropriate and interesting ways - and appropriate and interesting are certainly the words I'd use to describe most such events on the show in the past.

Same here! That's why I loved it when we got to see the drug plane crash in the season premiere. And I always enjoy seeing characters that are no longer with us, like the visions of Ana Lucia, Libby, Boone, etc. I wonder if such appearances will ever be explicitly explained.

  9. I wonder if you maybe shouldn't count votes that don't have a corresponding post; it seems that on every poll there's at least one person who votes 1 star even though the score clearly doesn't warrant it (this one included). It would at least be more valid if they explained their disdain.

  10. It is fun to spot how the writers spread the numbers throughout the show. I remember something recently, I think in Season 4, that was something related to 108. I can't for the life of me remember what.

I remember that too...I think it was that they were on the island for 108 days.

  11. Great discussions...I love reading everyone's ideas about this stuff!

With regards to the makeup of the Others, I've always thought of them as the original natives (aka Hostiles) who were united with the surviving members of the Dharma Initiative through Ben and the Purge. Then of course, there are other "new recruits" like Juliet who aren't natives and weren't members of Dharma. I guess we don't really know for sure which category people like Tom, the Picketts, and Ms. Klugh would fall into. To make things even less clear-cut, all the Others seemed to use the Hostiles' primitive attire from time to time, usually to deceive the survivors.

    Spoilers about upcoming casting/characters:

Regarding one of Marc's unanswered points, I was looking at the cast list at IMDb the other day, and way down at the bottom, listed as appearing in only two episodes (in 2009) was "Young Danielle Rousseau!" So it looks like we'll be getting some more of her story, which is great, although I'll miss seeing Mira Furlan in the role.

  12. I remember finding out about this years ago on the MB, and it was kind of surprising because Demi lives on my street (or rather, she lived with her parents on the street where I lived with my parents throughout middle and high school). She actually babysat for my brother one time and recognized the "Childhood" melody when he was playing "Flight to Neverland" on CD. Small world!

  13. I think I remember reading recently that Claire will appear in Season 5, but even so I'm sure it'll be fleeting. I have to say, her fate is one of the more compelling mysteries to me now. That look she gave Christian in "Cabin Fever" when John asked how to save the island was chilling!

And regarding Libby, according to this article they'd like to tie up Libby's backstory, but it's "contingent on factors beyond [their] control."

  14. If Locke's "death" ends up being related to the Medusa spider, it'll actually give "Exposé" some worth! ;)

Speaking of Locke...anyone think his throat looks weird in this shot?

Yeah, that does look odd. Almost like some weird kind of face mask. ;)
