1.. An opera would be nice (and I also happen to like Thomas and the King but that's just me) but if Williams feels he's not up to it then I respect and accept that.

    2. The petitioner seems to think that not writing an opera is all that's stopping Williams from achieving "true greatness", as if the Maestro isn't already truly great. J.S. Bach never wrote an opera and it never hurt his reputation. Bach did come close with the one-off "Coffee Cantata" but that's his "Thomas and the King"

    3. The petition only needs 100 signatures. I figure it'll take a lot more than that to convince Mr Williams to "operate."

    4. Reading the petition I get a sense this project is borne more out of fanboy desire to please the fanboy.

    5. I take it someone used the word "gay" in its proper context and meaning and someone else was offended?

    Cheers.

"Helping his career" is a bit of a stretch, perhaps, but several years ago -- before he got the A list assignments -- Jim and I became cyberfriends. I had several CD-Rs in my collection that needed artwork. He offered to make the artwork for me for his own practice. A couple of years later, he used those artwork pieces on his CV, as a way to get the assignments in the record label business. I still have many of them on my hard drive; I could maybe post them here for Jim Titus fans out there!

He also designed the cover of my master/Cand.Philol. thesis in 2004, which I eventually printed on a nice, glossy paper:

The Rhino release is Out Of Print.

The Blue Box is Out Of Print.

The full original OST program has never been legally sold in the USA.

Of course a release combining the complete score with the OST should be available for anyone to buy.

The fact it has improved sound and new alternates is just icing on the cake.

No one is forcing anyone to buy it, so no one really has the right to complain.  But this hobby is full of people who like to complain, and there are many outlets for them to complain at.

The process used for this score - cutting the performance edits using the actual 1st gen tapes - is pretty unique overall in the realm of all film scores ever.

But it was actually quite common for a period of John William's output.  Star Wars, CE3K, and Superman were all done this way.  I'm not 100% sure about Empire, Raiders, Heartbeeps, Monsignor, and Jedi but I think they were too?.  The Fury, Jaws 2, 1941, Dracula and ET were not.

Anyway, if you've never had issues with how Star Wars or CE3K sounded before, you won't have any issues with Superman either.  Basically, if you listen really closely, you can probably hear the edit points.  But I believe Mike cleaned up all of the most obvious ones for CE3K and Superman too.

That_Bloke reacted to Henry Sítrónu in new YouTube project: Piano Arrangements
Hello all. I've decided starting to upload some of my own piano arrangements on YouTube since I thought I'd be a shame if they are only watched and used at my place by just myself. 😉
For now and the near future it's just about John Williams but I will add some pieces by other composers, too.

I'm focussing on "hidden treasures" more delicate pieces that are actually suitable to adapt just by piano. Also, it's not about score reductions, so naturally, some parts of the orchestral score are not included. I just went online a few minutes ago and I'm glad to present you my first three videos. Btw I have no experience with video editing or YouTube at all. And I'm also curious if I'll encounter any copyright issues... 😛 But for now, enjoy!

Once is right, people who don't follow Williams or film scores at all. A lot of songs Williams has been involved with aren't _terrible_ per se, but when dudes like Leslie Bricusse writes the lyrics...you hear these tunes and say "These are movie songs", know what I mean? They don't really say anything outside of the film they're written for...but _some_ Williams songs...everything is at an equal level of quality, and the result is a song that can speak to people who don't even know that it was written for a film by a film composer, it transcends.

Read the comments on videos of "Nice to be Around"...people relate to it so much. In fact, star singers like Helen Reddy loved the song so much, she performed it for forty years, up to her death!

Sorry to dash your hopes upon the rocks @D_nev but can't you achieve the same results by referencing other books on Williams and other sources, or perhaps musicians and people who have worked with him before?

I think it would be an interesting read to track Williams' styles throughout the years.
EDIT: @Doug Adams has made a few detailed podcasts on the topic too

Excellent analysis, I am finding it enlightening and very educational as well! I’m glad to see other people are enjoying it too.

I quite enjoy the analysis sections where they break down some of his scores and look at how he develops a theme. It’s so fascinating to me how he does that and it’s nice to see such a concise analysis of that phenomenon.

It is unfortunate about the price, I agree. @That_Bloke makes a good point though, it’s geared more towards a more acedemic approach, though I’d still consider it accessible to everyone who is interested in learning more about Willaims’s work, even if some of the more theoretical articles are a bit harder to understand!

I am a music student though so I figured it was a well enough purchase to make, considering.

It is is a great read though, so I definitely consider waiting until a soft cover is released or finding a cheap used one.

Hell, I’d even be willing to let you borrow my copy if you’re really interested!

It's an academic text, not a coffee-table book for general public consumption. It's common for academic texts to be that price, because of the smaller market, and it's also the hardback edition. But I can understand the concern. I suppose if it wasn't an academic text it would be filled with simple-level stuff we already know or can get online for free.

I'm going to wait and see if a cheaper softcover edition comes out.
