That_Bloke reacted to Nick Parker in The Songs Of John Williams: which are essential?
Once is right, people who don't follow Williams or film scores at all. A lot of songs Williams has been involved with aren't _terrible_ per se, but when dudes like Leslie Bricusse writes the lyrics...you hear these tunes and say "These are movie songs", know what I mean? They don't really say anything outside of the film they're written for...but _some_ Williams songs...everything is at an equal level of quality, and the result is a song that can speak to people who don't even know that it was written for a film by a film composer, it transcends.

Read the comments on videos of "Nice to be Around"...people relate to it so much. In fact, star singers like Helen Reddy loved the song so much, she performed it for forty years, up to her death!

Sorry to dash your hopes upon the rocks @D_nev but can't you achieve the same results by referencing other books on Williams and other sources, or perhaps musicians and people who have worked with him before?

I think it would be an interesting read to track Williams' styles throughout the years.
EDIT: @Doug Adams has made a few detailed podcasts on the topic too

Excellent analysis, I am finding it enlightening and very educational as well! I’m glad to see other people are enjoying it too.

I quite enjoy the analysis sections where they break down some of his scores and look at how he develops a theme. It’s so fascinating to me how he does that and it’s nice to see such a concise analysis of that phenomenon.

It is unfortunate about the price, I agree. @That_Bloke makes a good point though, it’s geared more towards a more acedemic approach, though I’d still consider it accessible to everyone who is interested in learning more about Willaims’s work, even if some of the more theoretical articles are a bit harder to understand!

I am a music student though so I figured it was a well enough purchase to make, considering.

It is is a great read though, so I definitely consider waiting until a soft cover is released or finding a cheap used one.

Hell, I’d even be willing to let you borrow my copy if you’re really interested!

It's an academic text, not a coffee-table book for general public consumption. It's common for academic texts to be that price, because of the smaller market, and it's also the hardback edition. But I can understand the concern. I suppose if it wasn't an academic text it would be filled with simple-level stuff we already know or can get online for free.

I'm going to wait and see if a cheaper softcover edition comes out.

That_Bloke reacted to crumbs in The John Williams Expanded Score Master Spreadsheet
Forgive me if a thread like this already exists, but I couldn't find a spreadsheet on the forums which listed all JW's film scores and their release status (expanded, complete, OST, unreleased, etc.) Someone kindly messaged me asking if I could expand my spreadsheet for the Williams/Spielberg/Matessino expansions to contain ALL of John's filmography, so I came up with this.

Happy to be corrected on any mistakes (I did it in a rush and there could be expansions missing). I've also left lots of blank spaces next to scores I'm not familiar with as I have no idea whether they're complete or not. I stopped around the late 60s scores because, well, I'm just not that interested in that phase of his career. Sorry!

I figure this could be a useful resource in years to come as we look towards possible future expansions.

The OST album track called "Entry Into The Great Hall And The Banquet" only contains 4M1 The Banquet.  That album name had to be retained on the new set.

The actual cue for them entering into the hall first is 3M5 Entry Into The Great Hall and was unreleased until this set, where it's called "Through The Doors".

Of course, the Sorting Hat scene (3M6 House Selection) occurs between them entering the Great Hall and when they eat, and that's "House Selection" on the new set.

The Diagon Alley scene was originally scored by William in the beginning of a long cue called 2M4 Diagon Alley which also contains the entire Gringotts scene as well.  In the final film, Columbus dropped what Williams wrote for the alley sequence and tracked in a portion of 3M5 Entry Into The Great Hall in its place.

Williams clearly liked what he originally wrote though; Not only doe the session leak include many takes of them trying to get the violin solo just right, but also he decided to make a concert arrangement of the alley music for the Children's Suite.... and when assembling the album, made sure to include the Children's Suite recording of the alley music in the "Diagon Alley And The Gringott’s Vault" album track (which continues on with the Gringotts portion of 2M4 Diagon Alley after the Suite recording).

That_Bloke reacted to Jay in Harry Potter - The John Williams Soundtrack Collection 7CD boxset from La-La Land Records (2018)
It's a physical-only set.  The short version of why is because Warner Brothers Records own the rights to sell music from this score, but Warner Brothers Pictures owns the rights to all the music recorded that wasn't on the OSTs, so a third party (La-La Land Records in this case) needs to come along and license the music from both parties to make a release like this happen, and the only license they are given is for a physical set, limited to a certain number of copies.  You can hear Mike explain this much better than I ever can on this great episode of this Jurassic Park podcast here, and I think there's some more about it in this interview I did with him.

Nope, that's not correct.  As explained above, because the license to sell this music is owned by Warner Brothers Records, Water Tower Records (which is the music label of Warner Brothers Pictures) cannot release anything on their own.

This is not only the case for these three scores, but for Potters 4-5 as well.  Interesting by 6, WB Pictures was releasing the OSTs on their own labels, so they could create their own expanded scores for 6-8 and sell them digitally if they wanted to all by themselves with no specialty label needed.

This is a similar situation to the original six Star Wars scores, where Disney now owns all the music rights to all six, and can do their own expanded releases on their own and sell them digitally without a specialty label as well.

That's an interesting question that I don't actually know the answer to!

With all this talk of Harry Potter and the hopefulness of Indiana Jones in the coming years, it dawned upon me that you could easily merge many of the HP movie titles with the Indiana Jones name and they would sound legitimate. Par exemple:

Indiana Jones and the Philosopher's Stone
Join Indy as he uncovers the secret of the long lost "stone of power"!

Indiana Jones and the Chamber of Secrets
You thought the Temple of Doom was scary? Don't enter the Chamber of Secrets!

Step aside Cup of Christ, the Goblet of Fire takes the stage in the all new Indy adventure.

    Just to name a few.

Mike originally wanted to use Philiosopher's for the set, but WB wanted to use Sorcerer's, so that was that.

Schindler's Workforce is an album track containing two cues, 2M3/3M1 The Money Exchange and 3M1B Recruiting.

The original album featured different version of the cues than the versions used in the film, while the new set features the versions used in the film to open disc two. I don't believe there is anything else for these cues worth releasing, anything else in the leak would just be alternate TAKES, not rewrites.

Was it truly said by Williams himself? If not, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a hoax. After all, SuperShadow (the early version of Mike Zeroh) was at his prime during that time, making up thousands of fake rumors regarding Episode 1, many of which were reported by the press.

It's hard to wrap my head around what he wrote. Theoretically he wrote something new as to avoid using Luke's Theme, given Luke wouldn't be in the trilogy until the final moments.

So then presumably he wrote a new Main Title using a prequel theme? But if so, which? Or was it just an entirely standalone theme with no relationship to anything else in the entire score? Seems unusual to me.

I'm sure if it was performed it was recorded, which means it might surface one day.
