Now that we are still talking about it...
Late '90s - early '00s is the "power anthem" era of John Powell...
(A hidden gem this day, as we are now more accustomed to Powell's refined orchestration)

    Which one is your favorite?
    Here are the candidate:

    1. This moment in FACE OFF:

    2. This part from ENDURANCE:

    3. This  segment in ANTZ:
(^^ to be fair, the theme referred is originally composed by HGW, but here, it is JP's track, so I will let you decide)

    4. THE ROAD TO ELDORADO, as have been mentioned before:

    5. This moment from EVOLUTION:

    6. This part from DTOX:

    7. This moment from DRUMLINE:

If we can sum it the quality of the themes above,
that would be Simple, Cheesy, yet Electric.

Personally, i have to choose the one from Evolution, as that track is the one that "invite" me to love John Powell's music.
But Antz is close second, as i used to repeat over and over again the moment mentioned above when i was child.

    What's your pick?

Just wanted to take a moment and recognize this fantastic cue. I couldn’t stop humming this swashbuckling theme ( starting at 3:07) when I saw this as a youngster. This was the first time I wanted to know who this Powell guy was! The swirling strings that build to an explosion of that same theme (3:51) is such a joyous adventurous moment. And the rocking-zimmer-esque theme at 1:43 is a great fun too. Just a great sample of his ability to tell the story musically.

Powell has become and even better composer since then! Man I love this guy’s music.

John Powell by a margin. Chicken Run was probably the first score by him that I really loved (even though it’s co-written with HGW) and I was disappointed that Julian Nott didn’t get the gig having scored all of the Wallace and Gromit shorts (and I’m still a bit annoyed they felt the need to get Hans involved in the feature that Nott did score but I digress…). Listening back to Chicken Run I’m still firmly of the view that JP probably contributed the most interesting thematic material and had the stronger influence on the overall tone of the score. I can only imagine how the Narnia scores might have turned out done by JP as I can’t remember much HGW’s work on them (and I do like HGW).

Unlike, say Michael Giacchino who would probably have been my first pick a decade ago, JP has got better and better in his writing whereas MG has got broader and clunkier. Sure JP perhaps writes too many notes but his orchestration, thematic material and the intricacy of his writing is superb. His writing is ambitious in its detail and he has worked hard to ensure his ability matches his ambition. I really hope he does get some more non-animated films to score that allow him to write the kind of thematic orchestral film music we all love but for now I’ll take what I can get as he rarely disappoints.
