I think this is one of the most emotional scenes in film history with maybe JW's most moving theme performed so beautifully on the piano. When I first watched the movie (didn't hear the socre before) and that music appeared I got goosebumps. Amazing moment I will never forget.

Cool photo! I love how all the people at the table are smiling and listening as Williams tells them some fun anecdote that no one has heard before.

I am not sure this is helpful or not information given all that has been written in the thread, but I'll provide it in any case.

When I worked on Young Indy, we had access to all the Skywalker Sound sound effects reels. (These were on quarter inch, half tape format reels - e.g. 2 stereo channels only going in one direction as compared to consumer quarter inch that had 4 channels.) Amongst those tapes were the stereo mix downs of the recorded orchestral Raiders's music. We used a few bits as temp music before Joel McNeely and Laurence Rosenthal did the new scores. Overall, George Lucas preferred us to use no William music at all in the temps because he was worried that the tunes would be too associated with their original placement in the movies.

    Back to the question:
2m1 was not on the reels. I know this because I made a copy of the reel to cassette which I still have (but is in storage) as well as a capture of that tape. So, I would agree with @Jay that this was not recorded in 1981 - possibly it was spotted and maybe sketched. Since the tape reel were almost complete (even the insert fixes for 8m3 Indy Rides the Statue were there), my guess at the time is that they represented everything printed from the music recording sessions. (The 1m3 insert for the Boulder sequence was not there so I guess that was done later or created out of another take? CORRECTION: I checked, and it was on the ¼" reel and my cassette!)

However, there were no source music pieces on those tapes - there was only the Williams score, leading me to believe that those queues were found/recorded/licensed from elsewhere.

For example, the diggers song at Tanis was on the sound effects reels for Raiders. This song occurs at about 58 minutes. My understanding was this was recorded by the extras during the film production. (I personally edited this into the YIJC Cairo 1908 episode as an Easter egg when Indy arrives at Howard Carter's camp 21 mins into the My First Adventure movie that includes this episode.)

Elfman wasn't essentially relaced at the end of Spiderman 2, he left.  True he was getting more and more agitated at the business of film scoring which includes having to please producers and others not particularly involved on the creatives weighing in resulting in umpteenth revisions on complicated cues and that happened a lot on Spidey 3 too.  Set pieces are huge investments for studios as tons of planning of budget go into them plus they can be the first big action seen in an action film full of audience anticipation.  The first big action set piece on Spidey 2 was the elevated train (the first set piece in Spidey 3 was Harry and Peter's fight).  Elfman followed the scene and slowed the music down as the train slowed which execs felt made the scene anti-climactic.  Young amped up the energy (tempo, clusters, and volume) as the train slowed because it was running out of track which was preferred.  It was clear that Raimi and execs preferred Elfman for Spidey 3 but the rift was common knowledge and frequently referred to.  He wanted nothing to do with Raimi at that time so Young as did Raimi's Drag Me to Hell, etc.  As far as I remember, none of Elfman's music was recorded for Spidey 3, it was tracked in from the other films.  Young's theme has a big hole where Elfman's music when then play and the music editor edited in Elfman's music from previous films so Elfman does show up in cue sheet credit but for preexisting music.  The session and project were very intense and chaotic so that might have changed later but that was my memory.  Raimi and Young were both jerked around by the execs on Spidey 3 and the no soundtrack was released because the film was poorly received by fans and Sony didn't think it would make money as the landscape was shifting to digital downloads rather than physical cd's and almost all soundtracks except for Pirates of the Caribbean were not that profitable in the changing landscape.  A soundtrack master was produced and delivered; Sony declined to make a soundtrack.   If the reception was better, they would have felt it could make money and they likely would have opted to release the soundtrack.

The lack of subtitles is such a non-controversy in the movie...every Spanish scene has them speaking some Spanish and English and all the important lines are in English. It's only "woke" because of people who think they see "woke" in everything.

Haha. Quite. I like JW’s Han theme but Powell could quite well have written a great theme himself. As I’ve said before, Powell so effectively weaves it into his own style and material that if I didn’t know it was a JW theme I’d never have guessed (outside of the concert arrangement which has far more JW stylistic touches and orchestral thumbprints). Powell may not have quite the string of pubic consciousness themes but he’s a fine tunesmith in his own right.

The community has gotten to know each other over the years, and like in every long-running show, there is just more connection between us all. I think I can speak for all the regulars that over time we have learned how to read the JWFan room a bit better and just know what to say to each other.

Also, observing Williams aging and entering more and more mature phases in his career has made every return of his, no matter how small, feel like a little celebration of life...

...only for Williams to get so active as of late that we get to throw a reunion BBQ party every week now

I highly doubt Powell would tackle the task, well.... solo... because of the amount of music the show will probably require.

What a beautiful reason for Falstaft to dust off that musical catalogue once more!

There is something I find genuinely so endearing about Williams, this very soft-spoken, private, and reserved man who deals in the traditional ways of pen and paper, being so protective over this massively loud space opera franchise of all things. Prior to the Disney ownership, I really wasn't sure how much Williams cared about his association to Star Wars, but the last few years have really helped to drill home that he really seems to hold such an association close to his heart.

And now we can add new John Williams Star Wars music to the list. 2022 sure is feeling a lot like 2002.

"Hmm, a theme for Obi-Wan, huh? Okay, um, let's see here... George had me shelve that theme for him back in '98. Damn, it's got to be here somewhere. Think, Johnny, think!"
