Yeah, he's still better off than Alex North, though. Now that premiere must have been memorable for the composer.

it can work if the wings fold in a manner that does not resemble that much a pterosaur. That and him not walking like a pterosaur...
It will look cool on the ground, but flying it going to look like the 'reign of fire', beowulf, harry potter dragons....
But yes, 4 legs and sepparated wings make a dragon look cooler
Damn jackson that changes the model between films.
They should have hired Ciruelo Cabral to design the dragon:

I'm starting a new mini-series of three blog posts on Morricone's well-known score for Once Upon a Time in the West.
Here's my take on Jill's theme (the main theme):

Although it has been mentioned Zimmer and The Lion King, I think Beyond the Forest has some points in common with Ennio Morricone (composer that Zimmer has always looked carefully) and The Mission.
Listen to clips from 43:02 and then here:

Is a wonderful piece and I find it fantastic that there are composers as Shore who still write extremely melodic themes in the style of Morricone and Barry.

Fucking brilliant, left me exhausted by the end in a good way. Excellent directing and performances all around, specially the Charlton Heston cameo. Brought me to tears! Billy Cristal totally stole his scene; and of course Branagh and the rest of the leads are brilliant too. Was particularly impressed with Winslet, truly terrific performance.
Also, being a Shakespeare fan and my two favorite works of him being Hamlet and King Lear, I absolutely adored seeing the most-complete version out there -at least that I'm aware of. There was a lot of stuff that I didn't remember from my previous reads. Now I'm interested in re-reading it and watching the Olivier version to compare.
I always find it amazing how much I identify with Hamlet's character. Can't tell exactly why...
The only down-side was some of the too rushed editing. I got that this movie was going for a really agressive editing, but in some instances I wish they would have let the movie breath a little more. But I guess they felt it was already too long and didn't want to extend it any further. But four or five more minutes to a four hour movie wouldn't hurt.

Talking about POA on The Book Thief topic and how eclectic this Harry Potter score was considered to be, it got me into thinking about one of the most curious (and unreleased) cues from the soundtrack.
I'm talking about Harry's Vow. Also known as Brief Snow Scene.
Now this a cue that no thematic material whatsoever but it still extremly interesting and -I believe- so different from the rest of the score. I imagine Cuarón tracked it with something very specific and asked Williams to do something similar, but I can't find any evidence or music to support that. Therefore it's only a speculative theory. But it's still a very curious cue, and one that I haven't seen discussen anywhere around here I believe.
It has such a specific mood and it's quite haunting, and even a very different approach to what any other director might have asked for. Radcliffe's acting is over the top and cringe-worthy even, but the music doesn't go over the top. It stays down, soft, hurt... As you can see, this cue truly intrigues and fascinates me.
That's about it, just wanted to see if anyone else was interested on this cue.

Yeah, and there's quite some stuff that harkens back to Images. For example, Secrets of the Castle reminds me a lot of Dogs, Ponies and Old Ruins -it kinda makes sense, both Susanah York and Harry live in magical worlds- and the Dementors material sounds quite a bit like Reflections.
I remember there was more of this, and even got me into thinking that Cuarón was a fan of Images, but I can't remember the other examples.
Having said that, I absolutely adore POA and I think it's one of Williams' better scores from recent years.

The song does nothing for me. The problem is this - while some of the lyrics suggest otherwise, it doesn't feel like it's about a band of Dwarves in the way that Song of the Lonely Mountain did. It feels more like a ballad some guy is singing to his loved one on the eve of some apocalyptic event - dare I say it, a love song. I suspect many teenage girls will love it as a result.

Hmmm...many IMAGES threads, so I wasn't sure which to ressurect, but I'll try this one.
I was recently asked by the Norwegian Art Institute and the organization NyMusikk (New Music) to select a film with striking music and introduce it as part of their Film Club series. So after some thought -- and considering the venue -- I decided to go for Altman and Williams' IMAGES. Hopefully, it will introduce the film and score to more people and show them that Williams is so much more than just neoromantic fanfares and stuff! Here's the event info:

The Ohio State University Marching Band performs sheer magic when it plays John Williams and Hanz Zimmer. Less so with Howard Shore which is the low point in this video.

It's hard not to be impressed but there are always naysayers, this and the Michael Jackson tribute are a lot of fun.

I should have put a discription. They start with Williams Superman, Zimmies' MoS, Shore's LOTR, William's Harry Potter, then Jurassic Park which is amazing to see, then the finally
with POTC, the Sea battle between the SS OSU and the SS Meechegan is quite nice.
