    It's a great score!

Wish that Davis would have gotten more opportunities to shine in Hollywood movies, he would have kicked ass.

Personally, I like JURASSIC PARK III's score.
What we got, at the very least, was not a JW clone.

Davis said the following in an inteview for Soundtrack.net regarding scoring the film:

So it may just be as simple and mundane as Williams and Davis having the same agent who brought Davis up to Williams in conversation and Williams just went "okay" and that got pinned down as a personal recommendation from Williams.

Take out all of Williams' contributions and Solo is still easily the best Star Wars score outside of the main line series. There is nothing in Rogue One that is as good as "Into the Maw." I would argue Powell did such a good job with the score, Williams' contributions were insignificant.

Thing is, you're comparing a concert arrangement, with no limitations in instrumentation, conforming to scenes, or anything like that (essentially Wiliams writing literally whatever he wanted for 4 minutes), to Powell scoring a scene with specific requirements and instructions from the director.

Muad'Dib reacted to Tom Guernsey in The Official Ennio Morricone Thread
Just to let anyone thinking of getting the new Morricone: Cinema Suites for Violin and Orchestra album and buying it from 7Digital (https://uk.7digital.com/artist/marco-serino-orchestra-haydn-di-bolzano-e-trento-and-andrea-morricone/release/morricone-cinema-suites-for-violin-and-orchestra-18738180), they have somehow screwed up the file upload. On the website, the first six tracks are all marked track 1, same for the next half dozen marked as 2 etc. but in reality, all of the tracks marked 1 are the same track repeated, so basically you only get the first few tracks (see screen shot from my iTunes library... the track names are right, but you'll notice the first six tracks are all the same length). I've emailed customer support to ask them to fix it but just wanted to let people know and will update on the outcome. It's also at Presto Classical but was actually more expensive (which is unusual) and there were a couple of other things I wanted from 7Digital so I got it from there instead.

From what I've heard so far, it's a great album so I can't wait to hear the rest! Definitely a fine companion to the Yo-Yo Ma cello album.

Update: 7Digital will request a "redelivery from the record label"... given that could take a random amount of time, I went for a refund and have bought it from Presto Classical (https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/9264214--morricone-cinema-suites-for-violin-and-orchestra) as it's only £1 more in CD quality FLAC, plus you get a digital booklet from Presto that 7Digital don't do. All tracks appear to be present and correct!

I respectfully disagree with this view entirely. I think cinema has the capability of creating art. It is an artistic medium - just as sculpture is, just as literature is, just as painting is, just as theater is.

To the extent that a medium has the capacity to create art, to represent the truth of humanity, to explore the mysteries of our minds and how we think, it is immensely valuable.

I do not subscribe to the view cinema is just entertainment. That might be the case with Hollywood blockbusters but there is a lot of worthwhile art that is created in this medium also. Might not meet the criteria of entertainment for 99.9999% of people but to the extent art is a noble pursuit, then no cinema is not useless.

    Just my humble opinion.

La La Land was made for relatively little money, Blade Runner 2049 cost a fortune that was never to brake even. The fanbase isn't that strong and the word of mouth didn't help it.

I LOVE Spielberg but there is an unmistakable whiff of an ego project about WSS for him. He has been shouting from the rooftops since decades he wants to do a musical.

He did not want to do the hard work of creating a musical from the ground up. Say what you will about La La Land but they did that. No Spielberg wanted that HIS musical would be nothing less than the best American musical of all time - when it has a perfectly good classic adaptation.

Honest to god but for Spielberg, this probably wouldn't get made and now he has gone and set fire to 100 mil dollars just to scratch an itch.

As a fan of Spielberg, I am not sure this was a good use of either his time or his clout. I would much rather he gotten some other of his dream projects funded and made like The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara etc.

It would have been a gigantic failure regardless. The problem for this movie is not timing - but its existence. Who was this made for? No one. Nobody asked for it. You can't make a product with zero demand and then wonder why it did not sell.

Muad'Dib reacted to QuartalHarmony in JW's Liner Notes
Not sure they really count as 'liner notes', even in a generous sense, but I've spotted the following interesting performance notes in Music from the Star Wars Saga (HL04491067):
In The Forest Battle, theme entry at bar 63 (1m 33s on the OST recording) has the remark "Can-Canish" In Cantina Band, the solo section starting at bar 49 (1m 27s on OST) has the remarks 'ad lib. (Gene Krupa style)' in the drum part and, in the vibes part 'Solo ala Lionel Hampton'. On the OST, steel pans play the vibes part. I'd never thought of the Forest Battle theme as being in the style of a Can Can, but now I've seen it in the score, I can't unhear it, so to speak. In Cantina Band, it's interesting to see which (excellent) performers he seems to have had in mind.

Oh good! Well, here's the rest of what I have.

I did exclude a few like Olympic Fanfare or Lincoln which didn't have any personal thoughts or reflections about the music, they were just kinda bland summaries ("this is when I wrote it, what it was for, who performed it"). Some others were borderline uninteresting but I still threw them in here. Most of these have something to say, or just good writing. A few of them are extra beautiful, my favorites being Superman, Trumpet Concerto, and Across the Stars (the last line of that one, damn, John!). And in my previous post his Fanfare For Fenway note <3
