Stray thought 4: serving up nearly the entire brachiosaur reveal scene from the original film while rescoring it with generic high-plunking piano is the most brazen and witless act of pop-cultural appropriation since…well, any Star Wars trailer between TFA teaser #1 and the Obi-Wan trailer.

Didn’t look like the movies were ranked in quality, just chronological order?!?

I beat the World 7 (Castle World I guess) in Super Mario 3D World last night and it was a blast.

I liked the general red lava feel most of the levels had, but there was also a fun level with blue lava (and a new kind of platform that had an arrow on it pointing to where the next platform would appear, and all platforms disappeared after a short time), and an underwater level with a new kind of fish enemy (Rammerheads)

What made the night extra fun was that when I got to the final castle level, I needed 130 stars to enter it... but I didn't have that many!  So I went back to World 1 and started collecting every star I had missed (and made sure to get any stamps and top of flagpole touches I had missed as well), and had a super fun time hunting around for stuff, and re-exploring old levels.

Then I went back and really enjoyed the castle level and its battle against Bowser in a car, hehe.  Nice cutscene after beating him that opens up a whole new world up high!

    What a great game!

I like that they're going with slasher horror this year. The kids had had their 80's sci-fi/fantasy scares and now they're going to be threatened with slicing and dicing by Freddy Krueger himself.

It's kinda funny to use the word "prequel" regarding actual history.

I think it's really cool that Robert Englund is in the new season. To have the actor who played Freddy Krueger for so long, an iconic horror character and actor, be in Strange Things I think is exciting.

Yeah I mean effectively it's just the LSO anyway. An institution is made up of people, and if the majority of those people are present then it's basically the institution but without the name.

After a quick skim, I there's no question that you've rectified the glaring errors JW made with omitting material.

I would personally find a way to include the Shrieking Shack scene, but that's just me - I find it works rather well as an understated suspense cue.

My only criticism would be the sheer amount of material out of film order. Part of the appeal of a score album for me is to be able to recall the film and its events through music, and when composers put all their cues into a bag and shake everything, for me that takes away from that experience.

I always just say the LSO did HP1-3, even if it's not technically true, it's like 95% LSO members. Same with the Hollywood Studio Symphony doing the Star Wars ST; there were some freelancers thrown in here and there, but it was almost completely HSS players.

Even the HSS Wiki page itself lists the Star Wars sequels:

Here's links that worked for me for the trailers Jay shared:

Strange New Worlds looks great, even if the trailer leans a bit heavy on the Marvel-esque quipping. Anson Mount really is impossibly attractive and charismatic. Wish we got to see more of Rebecca Romijn's Number One though, she was so good in Discovery. Not long to wait though!

I haven't watched Lower Decks outside of a few clips that looked pretty good, but this teaser doesn't do much for me. I've heard good things about it though, and for anyone who's seen it, does it take a while to click into place or is it good from the start? I might check it out while I still have a Paramount+ account.

Between Picard, S4 of Discovery and now these I feel like I'm really getting back into Trek after years of disinterest. Pretty great to have all this stuff happening now! Anyone seen Prodigy? I know it's more of a kids show but that doesn't bother me, and Janeway was my first captain so I'd love to see more of her. I'm disappointed she hasn't shown up in Picard... yet.

    Conrad Pope says

"A friend of mine shared with me this newspaper article from 1949. Scroll down beyond the Britten part to the section called "Phuff." There, the columnist writes about a young band of teenage musicians from North Hollywood High School.
The "Curly" of the article is John Williams. NHHS was the alma of other iconic musicians including Paula Robison and John Neufeld, among others. The article clearly shows you're never too young -or too old- NOT to take music seriously. It also shows that over a lifetime dedicated to music, wherever JW stood, he always stood out! Hope you enjoy the read. "

Well the thing about aging is that it happens to all of us, and some people like to see that reflected in the characters they grew up with. I can't speak for everyone, but as a child who came of age alongside Harry Potter and his pals, it felt nice to grow with the characters in that sense.

Seeing characters in their elderly years isn't so bad. Community elders give us wisdom that was gained through experience, and continuing the stories of once young characters allows depictions of elderly people to exist within a broader context, rather than as pure archetypes of "old". Your mileage may vary in terms of execution, but the idea is solid.

Also it's nice to see actors over a certain age continuing to get work in a notoriously ageist industry (and society).

Do you stop seeing friends, family, relatives because they grow older? Why should film characters be any different?

Aging is reality. The challenge is for filmmakers to justify why we need to revisit these characters in a later stage of their lives.

The original Scavenger cue shows a fascinating glimpse into the creative process behind this trilogy, and serves as a parallel to Attack of the Clones. At this point, Williams knew Rey would be the granddaughter of Palpatine but wanted to write material that would not give it away. However, Abrams clearly thought it was too subtle, and had William rewrite Rey's music to include the minor third interval, a clear and irrefutable link to Palpatine. This echoes the foreshadowing of the Republic's transition into the Empire at the end of the end of Attack of the Clones, which also featured a revised cue designed to telegraph where things were going...and who was behind that shift too? Our man Sheev, of course.
