"This release will also include the coveted 'Fanfare for the Vienna Philharmonic Ball' complete with audience clapping, talking, and coughing to give the listener the real feeling of being present in the venue".

The official onsale is March 19 at 10am EST, but the email I got says "As a previous ticket buyer, you have exclusive access to tickets starting
March 18 at 10 a.m." Something for everyone to be aware of!Are you given a different link to use or do you just need to log in using your BSO account? I didn't get that email. I might have turned off promo emails.

Just wondering if anyone has received any replies to email queries since the new year. Over the last few weeks I sent three emails asking a specific query about an order (not related to the Bond issue above) and haven't received a reply. This is in contrast to the previous time I emailed them when I received a reply within days.
Don't want to seem like I'm complaining and I'm sure they are very busy but I would like a reply. If other people have received responses, it makes me consider the possibility that my emails are going into their spam folder for some reason.

A 2023 JW score shouldn't have to compare against JW's best work to earn a nomination. It should only have to compare against other 2023 scores. I love the DoD score but I think even its strongest defenders will acknowledge it cannot match his 1981 - 1989 output or even perhaps KOTCS. But that's not the point of the Oscars. It should only be nominated for its merits as a 2023 score and not as a score when benchmarked against the composer's greatest works.

I'm just stunned by the view that the Dial of Destiny score is less worthy than the other nominees because John Williams has been nominated in the past or because it isn't as iconic as other celebrated scores he's written.
Yes, a person could make the same flawed argument about De Niro's nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon. He's been nominated in the past for more iconic roles which arguably produced more broadly appealing performances but that doesn't detract from the quality of his work in Killers of the Flower Moon.

As the music branch is obviously comprised of composers, I think it is reasonable to say that they recognised the technical complexity and musical mastery of DoD which non-musical commentators would not be aware of.
It reminds me of reviews I see on YT for cameras by professional photographers. I often see comments saying that iPhone cameras are much better but the professional photographer will have a whole different criteria for judging a camera compared to the general public.

I think Spiderverse deserved a nomination but not necessarily at the expense of DoD.
-
I was thinking about that myself. JW's score is suffering from the lukewarm reception of its movie. JW got nominated for a score for a film that was met with a lot of derision, whereas Daniel Pemberton scored Across The Spiderverse which was a movie universally acclaimed but got no score nomination even though it probably deserved one. In this context, I can understand how JW's nomination became the punching bag for people to release their frustration that Spiderverse wasn't nominated and that DoD received some Academy recognition.

To be fair to Schaffrillas, I've never heard of him before this thread. But when it comes to film takes on YT, especially where Disney is concerned, there is so much garbage that I tend to start with the assumption that videos are from algorithm feeding haters until demonstrated otherwise.

Those kind of stupid outrage videos are proven to get plenty of views and Disney content is often the target. It appeals to the lowest of the low.
Also, unless a new JW score contains a "song" as EPIC!!!!! as Duel of the Fates, some people are going to say it's a bad score. I think JW's scores since TFA require attention to recognise their quality, which I don't think the haters are giving it. I don't know if that makes me sound elitist or a JW fanboy, but I think it's true.

I suppose from the point of view of the people on social media who hate the nomination for DoD, they probably only saw the movie once or twice, and maybe listened to the OST once. Most of JW's work post TFA has taken multiple listens for me to appreciate its greatness. I doubt those people have put in the same time.
It's also interesting to remember that a lot of reviews of the movie had praised the score, so I guess its nomination wasn't entirely from left field.

His nomination was a surprise to me and therefore I didn't expect him to be nominated. A first nomination for a younger composer would mean more and be more consequential to their career than the 54th one for Williams. But that doesn't mean I'm still pleased to see him nominated and recognised by his peers.
I think the scoring of the whole Airport / Syracuse part of the movie justifies the nomination by itself, and I'm trying to think of that objectively and not as a massive JW fan. One of the comments from those Reddit screenshots is claiming there's no new decent music in DoD. If they can't recognise the quality of those tracks, I think they either didn't pay attention or JW's modern style of scoring simply isn't to their taste.

The best they can do is acknowledge him with nominations and that's fine with me. It's pretty obvious he isn't winning another competitive Oscar; I think that final ship sailed with Fabelmans.
The wider Academy voters when they listen to JW's scores that were nominated by the music branch...

What's the process? Does the music branch vote for the nominees and then the entire academy votes for the winner?
-
That was a nice surprise. I wasn't expecting that.

I'm not the biggest of Rose's theme. I'm not saying it's a bad theme but it's just personal preference. I can still enjoy it while listening to the score but it is probably my last favourite Star Wars theme. I like Helena's theme much more.
The Airport / Battle of Syracuse / Centuries Join Hands are the best trio of tracks from both scores.
As for the movies, TLJ is a decent Star Wars adventure (aside from the terrible Canto Bight stuff) but it is an awful sequel to the story threads introduced in TFA. For that grievance alone, I prefer DoD.

Listing to this great end title cue from the 70s. I definitely hear the three notes of the beginning of his Voyager theme.
