  1. Indeed, I remember another interview where he said he was able to write better tunes than John Williams.
  2. Sounds really intriguing. I'm very much looking forward to this score.
  3. hm just confused... Has this ever been officially anounced? The only reason why I think people would believe that is because in some internet movie fle you briefly saw some LSO Abbey Road Studios Footage together with Call of the Champions (I remember it well) but it was just a snippet and covered with dialogue.. it could have easily been just random video footage combined with random audo footage... So how do you think that he actually did a re-recording with the LSO? For what purpose.. to have a "definetive version" in his private library? If I remember well, it was reported on an online article on BBC news or some other UK news website. Williams recorded "Call of the Champions" with the LSO and the London Voices just a few days before the Sorcerer's Stone sessions. Speaking about yet unreleased Williams' fanfares and themes, I hope he or someone else will record "Esplanade Overture". It's probably my single favourite Williams piece ever.
  4. That is a piece taken from Non Stop Music production library. In my job I have to use a lot of production music libraries (I'm a promo producer for a broadcast television company) and in various occasion I stumbled across many pieces "inspired" by famous film music cues. It's the purpose of a music library: broadcasting and production companies don't want to spend a pooload of money in licensing famous pieces, so you have to search for a piece that sounds like Williams or whatever or that has the same vibe/style.
  5. Does that differ from the CD? If so, how? There's a different opening and a more bombastic closure. It's not that different from the actual OST version, but it would be nice to have it. And yes, I'd too totally love an album like Yo-Yo Ma Plays Morricone with new specially arranged pieces from various scores. Let's hope the upcoming Geisha suite recording Williams and Ma will record in Chicago in the next weeks will include also something like this.
  6. After hearing the new gorgeous arrangement of "Marion's Theme" that Williams debuted in Tanglewood last week, I found myself thinking that it's really time for JW to record another compilation album à là The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration. Here's a list of pieces I strongly hope Williams will record soon: . "Marion's Theme" (new concert arrangement) from Raiders . "Escapades for Alto Sax and Orchestra" from Catch Me If You Can . "Dry Your Tears, Afrika" (concert version) from Amistad . "Irina's Theme" (expanded concert arrangement) from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull . "Escape from the City" and "Epilogue" (expanded concert arrangements) from War of the Worlds . Theme From The Lost World (the concert version has a very cool, brassy intro) . "Hymn to the Fallen" from Saving Private Ryan (I think he could record an even better performance than the one on the OST, especially the chorus) These would be a great treat on an eventual Spielberg/Williams Vol.3. Then there are the pieces from other films: . "A Bridge to the Past" and "The Knight Bus" (concert arrangements) from Prisoner of Azkaban . Full "Harry Potter's Children Suite" (didn't he record it during the Sorcerer's Stone sessions?) . Full Suite from JFK (Theme, The Motorcade, Arlington) . Theme from The Patriot (concert arrangement) . Theme from The Accidental Tourist (concert arrangement -- he played it in Chicago last November and it was amazing) And then I sincerely hope he will record soon the Horn Concerto. Did I miss something else worth?
  7. Very interesting and informative piece indeed. I particularly loved the section where Matessino talks about the camaraderie spirit between the composers during their Fox years. It was an amazing gathering of talent that it's almost scary to imagine they were working under the same roof (Williams, Courage, Spencer, Goldsmith, North, Fraser, Morton et al). And the tribute to Sandy Courage was really heart-warming. Kudos to Neil!
  8. Judging from these quotes, Lucas wants really to go prequel-style for Indy as well, but I'm pretty confident Ford and Spielberg don't see exactly the same way as their fellow. It's more likely in the end Lucas will produce a TV series à là Young Indy with Mutt as the main character. However, Lucas is saying it all: Spielberg did Indy 4 just for the fun of doing an adventure romp in the style of the older films, while he had different views about the film. I guess they now have incompatible point of views about the character and the style to adopt.
  9. Wow, it should have been an amazing concert... Can't wait to hear it!
  10. If I'm correct, The Iron Giant was performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and not the City of Prague. However, it seems lately the City of Prague has really improved. It probably depends also on the conductor and the rehearsal time, but their latest re-recording such as The Private Lives of Sherlock Holmes and The Guns of Navarone are superb. And I can't wait to hear the new El Cid re-recording, the preview clips sound amazing.
  11. I had the luck to attend those magnificent concerts last November. In that same program, Williams and the CSO gave terrific performance of the two pieces from Witches of Eastwick ("The Balloon Scene" and "The Dance of the Witches") and "Adventures on Earth" from E.T., not forgetting also the gorgeous concert arrangement of The Accidental Tourist as an encore.
  12. The piece is indeed conceived as a tribute to Williams' long-time friend Seiji Ozawa in the form of a kind of little Concerto for Orchestra. Williams said the piece gave him the opportunity to explore several unorthodox instrumental combinations and groupings, in which all the sections bounce in and out several thematic "ruminations". It's indeed an impressive piece, a real tour-de-force for the entire orchestra, but it's lightweight and exihilarating in its nature. You can find several info about the piece on Markus Hable's great website.
  13. I saw the film just once many years ago, so I can't remember it very well. However, the score works quite well in the film, it's a more traditional approach than JFK (in which the music was conceived almost as library cues for a documentary piece) and there are several interesting pieces like "The Meeting with Mao", in which the music takes almost an operatic overtone. The music gives a very brooding, morose tone to the film. It's probably one of Williams' darkest scores.
  14. I'm listening to the new Coldplay album in the latest days. It's really good. Chris Martin surely knows how to write a good melody, he has a great sense of lyricism.
  15. Keep in mind that Chris Nolan apparently doesn't like melodic-oriented scores for his movies, so if Howard would have scored this film solo, probably it would have ended up along the lines of Michael Clayton. Anyway, what I heard so far about The Dark Knight stinks big time. I disagree wholeheartadly. Even if it ain't no masterpiece, there's far more creativity in just one minute of KotCS than in the whole 70+ minutes of The Dark Knight.
  16. It was expected, but it's a very welcome news! Cool!
  17. Oh, I have SO many songs that are special for me... I'll try to put down a short list, in no particular order: "Across the Universe" - The Beatles "Tiny Dancer" - Elton John "In My Time of Dying" - Led Zeppelin "Everybody Hurts" - R.E.M. "In Your Eyes" - Peter Gabriel "Shape of My Heart" - Sting "Forever" - Ben Harper "Dear Chicago" - Ryan Adams "Landed" - Ben Folds "All I Want is You" - U2 "Secret Garden" - Bruce Springsteen "Foolish Love" - Rufus Wainwright "Wild Horses" - Rolling Stones "Good Riddance" - Green Day "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" - Creedence Clearwater Revival "Head Over Feet" - Alanis Morissette "Here Comes the Sun" - The Beatles "All Along the Watchtower" - Bob Dylan "In My Room" - Beach Boys "Let's Get It On" - Marvin Gaye "Superstition" - Stevie Wonder "Bohemian Rhapsody" - Queen "Come Down In Time" - Elton John "Kiss from a Rose" - Seal And many others...
  18. "Exsultate Justi" and "Cadillac of the Skies" from Empire of the Sun "The Ice Planet" (aka "Stored Memories") from A.I.
  19. Man, I'd love to hear these pieces specially arranged for wind orchestra. Let's hope someone will record the concert!
  20. In no particular order: Monica's Theme from A.I. Hedwig's Theme from Harry Potter Avner's Theme from Munich The Father's Theme from Catch Me If You Can Theme from Angela's Ashes Honorable Mention: Sayuri's Theme from Memoirs of a Geisha, Blue Fairy's Theme from A.I., Amelia's Theme from The Terminal, Theme from Sabrina
  21. That's a terrific recording indeed, performed with great gusto by Sedares and the Phoenix Symphony. The original film recording is of course of great historic importance and absolutely fundamental for archival reasons... but when I want to enjoy The Magnificent Seven I always put the Koch recording in my CD player.
  22. It looks pretty legit indeed. As in other occasions, Johnny take the suggestion from the temp track, but succeed to improve it. I do not particularly love the "Victory Celebration" cue, but it has a nice melody and it surely is much better than the one in this temp track. Oh, and it was several years since I last saw that Avid countdown! I used to work with Avid, but now I use Final Cut Pro. Nice catch, btw!
  23. I start saying that I'm not an audiophile nor a huge sound expert, but I think I can recognize a good recording from a bad one. That being said, I think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is one of JW's best recorded album of the latest years. There's a great dynamic punch throughout all the recording, a beautiful clarity that enhances greatly the wonderful performance of the L.A. musicians. I know Shawn Murphy is criticized a lot on this board for his recording techniques in Williams' scores, but I think KotCS is really a top-notch recording.
