Randy Newman is one of my favorite composers. I don't know a lot of his works, but the Pixar scores always bring a smile to my face, and are a joy to listen to. - Marc

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Mr. Breathmask replied to Mr. Breathmask's topic in General Discussion
Oh, sorry. No, I meant another theme. I don't have the soundtrack with me right now, so I can't really look it up, but one of the times it's featured with the Dursley's is when Uncle Vernon reads Harry's letter. I also think it plays in the main menu of the CoS DVD 1. - Marc, who needs to listen to PS again, but is busy listening to his new scores. A Gift of a Thistle from Braveheart -
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Mr. Breathmask replied to Mr. Breathmask's topic in General Discussion
Marian, I think that theme represents something of an inability to cope with magic, as it is both used for Neville, and for the Dursley's. I used to think it had something to do with flying, but that way it would be kinda weird to have it as underscore for the Dursleys. I have to give The Face of Voldemort another listen, to figure out the thematic elements right. And Merkel, what you're saying is right, because from what I've read, Williams actually read the books before writing the score, one of the few occasions he actually dove into the material before writing the themes. As I understand it, he usually writes a main theme or two, and then when he spots the movie with the director, he goes in deeper, writing music to go with the scenes. - Marc -
The other day, I was listening to this score again, and it struck me how absolutely brilliant this one really is. Williams completely captures the spirit of Rowlings writings. With The Order of the Phoenix still fresh in my memory, I was surprised to hear how well Hedwig's theme fits to it. Williams captures both the magic and the underlying threat of Harry's powers and the world he lives in. Once again, I get the feeling that Williams was the one person involved in the movie who really knew what it was all about. It is too bad Williams had such a busy schedule last year. If he could have devoted more of his time to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, I'm sure the score would have been spot on again. As it is now, the score may flow good with the movie, but listening to the first one again makes me realize there were a lot of missed oppurtunities. While Harry's theme is great, and the new themes for Fawkes and the Chamber are also wonderful, NOTHING can compare to Hedwig's Theme. Here's hoping that Williams will have a lot of time to score the third film, and come up with a wonderful dark score. - Marc, who hummed music to go with the scene at the end of chapter 1, book 5.

Spielberg's Best Cinematographer?
Mr. Breathmask replied to Elmo Lewis's topic in General Discussion
Yes, I thought that up by myself. By making the camera move more freely, I mean like figuring out what sort of camera to use. For instance, if you put a camera on a track somewhere, the actors will have to step over it. If you use a steadicam, you get a fluid motion, but it won't be the same every take. By making it move freely, I mean also that you should be able to move the camera all the way, without seeing crew or equipment. - Marc -
Spielberg's Best Cinematographer?
Mr. Breathmask replied to Elmo Lewis's topic in General Discussion
So, the director decides how he wants to show things, what angle he wants to pick, how he wants the camera to move, and the DP or cinematographer then makes it possible, right? Does this also include stuff like making the camera able to move freely? - Marc, who's glad with this explanation, since he was already planning on asking about this. -
Spielberg's Best Cinematographer?
Mr. Breathmask replied to Elmo Lewis's topic in General Discussion
All right, I must confess. I have no effin' clue what a cinematographer does. I absolutely can not tell the difference between good and bad cinematography, because I don't know how to look for it. When I saw Road to Perdition everyone was all like "wow, this is great cinematography", but I have no clue at all. - Marc, :? P.S.: Is a cinematographer the same as a Director of Photography? -
What's your John Williams C.D. collection like?
Mr. Breathmask replied to King Mark's topic in General Discussion
Oh boy. -How many Williams c.d's do you own? Let me see... 15 I think, including one classical CD. In order of acquaintance (includes also work by other composers): 1. Peter en de Wolf (Boston Pops, first CD I got, years before I discovered it actually was a Williams CD). --. Titanic (Horner; OST) along with: 2. Jurassic Park (OST) 3. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (with Bonus CD-Rom) --. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Shore; OST) 4. Star Wars (SE) along with: 5. The Empire Strikes Back (SE), 6. Return of the Jedi (SE), and 7. Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace (OST) 8. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (20th AE) 9. Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace (UE) 10. Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones (OST) --. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Shore; OST) 11. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (with Bonus CD-Rom) 12. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (OST) --. The Perfect Storm (Horner; OST) 13. Jaws (25th AE) along with: 14. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (CE), and 15. Superman: The Movie (2 CD Rhino Release) UPDATE: Just added: 16. Schindler's List (OST) --. Braveheart (Horner; OST) --. Dinosaur (Newton Howard; OST) ANOTHER UPDATE 17. Catch Me If YOu Can (OST) --. Batman (Elfman; OST) --. Toy Story (Newman; Score) --. Toy Story 2 (Newman; OST) UPDATE: --. More Music From Braveheart (Horner; *cough* rip-off! *cough*) 18. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (OST) -Do you have every Legit releases or most of them? Well 15 isn't an awful lot, so no, I guess. -Do you only get the film scores or/and the concert works. Only film scores, but I happen to have a CD of Peter and the Wolf and the Nutcracker Suite performed by the Boston Pops and conducted by our main man John. It was my first CD ever, about eight years before I became a JW fan. -Do you plan to eventually get everything? I haven't planned to, but you know, maybe some day. Some wonderful day... -Are you obsessed aquiring every note Williams ever composed? No. -Do you get Williams scores even if you don't like them for sake of completeness? So far, I have not yet done so. -Do you get stuff you never even heard? No. I always see if I can check out the movie first, unless it's music from a series, like Star Wars or Harry Potter. This is also the reason I haven't bought any of Williams' concert works. -Do you have the various bootlegs that are floating around? No, none of them. -What's your "Prize Posession". I guess it's the Star Wars SE's, because TESB is just the best score ever. I don't really have any valuable scores. That Peter and the Wolf CD has gone long out of print, though, but I hardly listen to it, since it has someone talking through it. -What's your Holy Grail? The Indy trilogy. 'Nuff said. -Do you have some complete scores from rear channel DVD extractions? No, but I do occasionally take the time to switch the settings on my DVD player so I can listen to the score only while the movie plays. -Do you buy the Boston Pops c.d.'s? No. -Do you buy the Williams compilations by other orchestras? No. I haven't even bought Williams compilations by Williams. I want the whole thing or nothing. -What are any major holes in your collection? Well, the Indy scores. -What do you plan on buying or aquiring in the near future? Well, again, the Indy scores. And the BttF trilogy, but that's Silvestri, so I don't know if that counts. -Are there certain types of Williams c.d.'s that you don't like and avoid even if they are available?(60's comedy scores,americana...) It's not like I really avoid Williams' slower and more gentle work like Schindler's List (which I don't have), but I just prefer the bold, bombastic stuff. Seeing as I don't have a lot of money so I can buy CD's at random every time I walk into a store, I only go for the stuff I'm certain I will like (although I have taken a few gambles, even though you can't really go wrong with Jaws and CE3K). So I don't consciously avoid them because I dislike them (this also goes for scores I have not yet heard), I just don't have enough money to take the gamble every time. -Any major Williams scores(Star Wars,Indy,Superman,JP,Potter..ect...)you never heard on c.d. presention? Again, the Indy scores, although I have some tracks as Real Media files on my computer. I haven't heard anything of TLW outside of the movie, except for one listen to the rear channels only and a midi file of the main theme. -Are you only a Williams fan for mainly for certain specific series of film scores because you are big fans of the movies and don't really care about the rest?(Harry Potter,Star Wars) No. I picked up A.I. for ?5,-- not knowing what I was going to get, and it turned out to be great. It's not listened to as often as, say, E.T. or Jaws, but it was a wonderful experience to find this little gem for a small price. When I buy music, I buy it because I (think I will) like the music. Not just because of the films. I do do this sometimes with serials, but we all know Williams is the master of sequel scoring (well, and normal scoring anyway) so you can't really go wrong there either. - Marc, who thinks this should be a sticky topic. -

Merry happy birthday, then! Myself can't even remember when it was that I turned 16. Enjoy yourself, Marc! Thanks. -
I think it's weird. Lucas said that one of the reasons he's so glad he got to do the prequels is that he could do the Clone Wars. As it turns out, we only get the first and the final battle in the movies. I think this once again shows that Ep. 1 took WAY too much time to introduce everything. - Marc, who will watch Ep. 1 again in less than half an hour.

Of course not. Some schmoe just wanted to be interesting. Besides, the raptor motif is four notes, CE3K is five. - Marc, who gets annoyed by trivia's like these. The Shark Cage Fugue from Jaws

I've seen those poster version jewel cases in stores. I have the ones with the medal-like fronts, but what's this about them booklet versions? Don't tell me their's like six different versions of the SE's out there too? - Marc, who will be 16 tomorrow. Montage from Jaws -
Married... With Children is definately one of the best shows of the past 15 years. Al Bundy was the ultimate anti-hero on television. It always helps you to think that it doesn't matter how bad you have it, at least you don't have it as bad as he does. They're airing reruns over here as well, I think they're still in the first season or something (where Steve is still Marcy's husband). I don't really watch it anymore, because I've already seen most of them, especially the older ones. Too bad the hooting took so long in later episodes. - Marc, who thinks Married... is absolutely brilliant.

Why I Don't Like Superman: The Movie
Mr. Breathmask replied to Elmo Lewis's topic in General Discussion
I have also had problems with Superman: The Movie. Gene Hackman was never able to sell Lex Luthor to me as the greatest evil genius on the planet. He's just some guy with a big ego and little patience. Also, when you have someone like Superman, who is virtually invincible, the ONLY thing that he can't beat is time. We all know time goes by, and things change, whether we want them to or not. So this is Superman's only weakness (besides the Kryptonite of course). Then why THE HELL did he have to overcome that too? And like Ross said, why is Clark Kent a nerd? Anyway, I don't really like the movie, but I think the score is good. Even though it did disappoint me a bit, because I find it to be... well, just... loud, really. A bit over-bombastic. Perhaps that's due to the subject matter, but this score wasn't as able to grip as CE3K, which I bought at the same time, and had no expectations of, except to hear the finale. - Marc, who hated that bit where Superman started about "The American Way". I just couldn't identify with that. -
Who does not have a theme on his own either. That's true. But Chewbacca always seemed a bit like a sidekick to me. - Marc
-
I think it's because he's always with Han Solo, or someone else. So there's not really much use for a Chewbacca theme. He's never really had any moments of grandure or anything. Well, maybe in Episode III. And welcome into the community! - Marc
-
Losers. At least they're not as bad as the BBFC. - Marc, who thinks giving a movie an 18 rating just because of a headbutt is rediculous.
