For Always just has those overdone Oscarbait lyrics. The oscarsongs always have something like "I'll love you always", "you'll be in my heart forever" blah blah blah
Even though it was not used in the film so there's no way it could have been nominated.

I must have missed that it wasn't used in the film. But anyway, lyrics like that just bother me. I have the soundtrack to The Perfect Storm and the song on that one is also one of those (Yours Forever). So was the song for Pearl Harbor. I don't know if this is really true, but it seems like this ever since My Heart Will Go On won the Oscar. Perhaps it was like that before, but anyway. The lyrics just bother me.

I don't know about that, but I know there's some creaking at the end of Journey to the Island (Jurassic Park). And I believe you can also hear someone inhaling at the end, when the chopper flies into the distance.

Great read, Kevin. I thought Padmé was going to die, though. And in your story, I feel Mace died too early. He's a fairly large character from the Jedi's, and he shouldn't die that early in the story. I also find it hard to believe Boba Fett is already a bounty hunter at the age of 12. But still, a very good read.

Gollum's song is just perfect. And it's so darn sad, it almost makes you cry for thise character.

It annoys me how the Academy often looks at the nominees name, and tries to give everyone something. While everyone who gets nominated deserves to be, because they're all fine composers, I often get the feeling that Williams sometimes gets snubbed, just because he already has five Oscars. That's a load of BS, because the award should go to the BEST SCORE OF THE YEAR, and not to THE BEST ATTEMPT AT A GREAT SCORE BY SOMEONE WHO HASN'T WON THAT MUCH YET. :?
Besides, it's been 10 years since Williams' last Oscar, so it's time he gets another one. The genius is not dead yet.

Dammit. I was waiting for June 11 to post something like this. I completely forgot. Luckily you didn't, Ted.
Jurassic Park has been my favourite movie for many years. Not until I saw The Fellowship of the Ring did it come down a notch. Jurassic triggered a revolution in the world of visual effects, and it's one of those films that is enjoyable just because of the magic the illusion of film gives us.
It also featured one of Williams' best scores from the ninetees, the first Williams soundtrack I ever bought, after having looked for it for a long time.
Furthermore, it unleashed a dinosaur-craze, that was visible literally everywhere. After a saw this movie, I wanted to be a paleontologist.
Today, I want to be a filmmaker.

I have no problem with the pod race being without music, actually. I think it's one of the (few) highpoints in Ep. 1. But just because it worked for this sequence, it doesn't mean it will work everywhere. Shame on Mr. Burtt.

Last thing I heard, Saruman is going to die at the beginning of RotK, when Gandalf expells him from the order of the Wizards. The theory goes that Gríma will slice Saruman's throat, knocking the old man backwards off his balcony, to land on a large spikey wheel, which will impale Saruman, who is still holding the Palantír, which rolls away and drops into the water.
The seeing stone will then probably be picked up by Pippin, taken over by Gandalf, etc.
At this point, this is considered to be the most likely theory, although rumor has it that over five different deaths have been shot for Christopher Lee's character. So who knows? Only Peter jackson, I guess.

I thought Burtt just confinced Lucas not to have any music until the missile was fired, so the seismic charges would have a better effect. No music was written, or cut, as far as I know, for that bit of the chase.

Well, I'm not going to go in depth on all of the lyrics, but I think that the song also shows the parallel between Frodo and Gollum's journey. A lot of stuff that is spoken of is Gollum's personal quest, but to me it also seems to resemble Frodo's journey to destroy the Ring, how he feels alone, and the fear that he might fail. The fall of Gandalf and the breaking of the Fellowship have left him quite shattered, I think.

ESB is one of the best movies ever made!
The score matches the movie perfectly!
It pefectly compliments a film and heightens the already powerful drama.
Er... like I said, my intent was never to talk down on ESB. Maybe I should have said it's BIGGER than the film, instead of TOO BIG. Please read carefully.

Jeff, I did not vote in the JWFan top 10, basically because I hadn't heard enough of Williams full body of work to really shape an opinion (at that time I hadn't heard CE3K, Jaws or Superman, to name a few). I did see the final results though.
What I am saying is just that this is a stand-alone opera almost. And listen to the music that didn't make it to the movie. Every single bit of it is great.

Well, I'm not trying to bash this score in any way. Like I said, it blows me away. It's just that whenever I hear it on its own, I get a far grander picture than what is actually in the film. It's hard to explain.

Main Title and First Victim from Jaws -
Everytime I listen to The Empire Strikes Back, it blows me away. This score is John Williams in all his genius. It's like an opera of Wagnerian proportions. It's bigger than the movie it was made for.
The way I see this, is that TESB is Williams going full force, pulling all the plugs. While the film has its flaws (naturally, like any other film, good or bad), I can find none in the score (except perhaps for the use of Yoda's theme in Cloud City, but the pure melodic value of it makes it all work).
I wish Williams could do this again. Write a score without constraints. Without his music being butchered.
In my humble opinion, TESB is the best work Williams has ever done. Too bad I wasn't around to see TESB in theatres when it was first released.
