  1. Yes, for me too the first Williams moment, although I didn't realize it at the time, was Journey to the Island, when I watched the film the second time. I just couldn't get it out of my head, and I spent a very long time trying to get my hands on the soundtrack. It was the first JW soundtrack I bought. I really got into Williams when I bought the complete Star Wars trilogy about a year ago. I just love that music. But my latest Williams moment came only three days ago. Last Friday, one of my hours at school was cancelled, so I decided to take a stroll through the mall. I found a copy of the A.I. soundtrack for only ?5,--, so I decided to buy it. Even though I'm more of a fan of the big, brassy scores, I couldn't pass up on a Williams album for only 5 Euros. So I bought it, played it, and found out that from now on, I shouldn't worry anymore about seeing the movie first, or only buying the brassy scores. No, I now know for sure that Williams is the way to go. No matter what, I will always go back to him. As of right now, I am starting a quest to make a real collection of Williams scores. - Marc, who thinks his quest's going to be expensive, but worth it. Stored Memories and Monica's Theme from A.I. 2. Well, when there's a lot of popularity about something, I often go to check for myself and find out. Like with Star Wars. The first Star Wars film I ever saw was Phantom Menace. I had heard of Star Wars, of course, a bunch of films locked somewhere in a vague memory of seeing an add for it on TV or something. When all the buzz began, and I read up on it, that it was a cultural phenomenon, and that it had been 17 years since the last movie, I understood, that this film could do nothing but disappoint, because the anticipation was too great. So I sort of knew what was going to happen: a madness of anticipation, and then people complaining about how much it sucked and so on. I went to see the film either way, to make my own evaluation, because I knew other people's would be clouded by their experience of seeing those classics so long ago. I went to see the movie, thought nothing special of it. Then a few weeks later, I saw the originals in one go. Meh. Then I saw them again. And again, and again. Sure, they are not the greatest films ever made, but they are damn good entertainment, and I really like them. With Harry Potter, there's a similar story. The novels were first brought to my attention by the Dutch media, when reports of midnight book sales reached the 8 o'clock news. Harry Potter was explained and everything. I was curious. I went to the library and borrowed part 1 through 3 (4 wasn't out yet). I had to rush through the books, because I knew that someone was probably going to reserve them like I had, so I had to read them in three weeks. It turned out to be no problem at all. Rowling's power lies in her ability to create a believable and huge wizard world, combined with a strong thriller plot and some surprising twists. The parts not in the wizarding world, with the Dursleys, are written in a really funny style, so you're gripped from the beginning. It also gives young children hope, that someday a giant with an owl in his pocket will arrive and tell them that they have been chosen to go to a magical world, where they will have many exciting adventures. The first book was brilliant. Two was just a sequel: more of the same, but I'm sure it'll fit in the big picture later. Three is awesome. Dark, gritty, lovely. I couldn't wait to read book 4. It was great. Epic, adventurous, and with a huge cliffhanger. Just one step away from the great war. Pretty soon, I had a copy of each book in its original language standing on my shelf. Needless to say, I went to see the film. However, I think the film isn't really that good. I've made comments about the films before, I'm not sure whether it was here, but I think too much has been copied directly from the book. You can just see where large chunks were shot, but left on the editing room floor because of time constraints. The movies are not much more than the most memorable scenes from the book brought to life (extremely well, BTW) and cut together. And I too hate all the junk that's on the market. Harry Potter boardgames, what the hell is up with that? As for The Lord of the Rings, when one of my classmates told me in the spring of 2001 that In de Ban van de Ring (that's the Dutch title) was going to be made into a movie, and that it was one of the most popular pieces of fantasy literature, something in the back of my mind clicked, as I rembered hearing about the book a long time ago. I just knew the title, had no idea what it was about, I didn't even know what a Hobbit was. So I watched the trailer, and decided to prepare myself for what looked to be an awesome movie experience. I got a copy of LotR (in Dutch) from the library, rushed home, went back to get The Hobbit, as I didn't know that LotR was a sequel, and started reading. I always try to have background knowledge when judging a popular phenomenon, so I don't start yelling random thoughts of "it sucks" and "they're kiddie books" and everything. - Marc, who feels like he's just been ranting on and on... The Moon Rising from A.I. Artificial Intelligence
  3. I don't think it's all that bad, missing quidditch. Maybe they'll focus more on the story and make it really dark. - Marc, who finds it interesting to see that most franchises are best at their darkest.
  4. Joe, you ask how to fix the Oscars? I say people should look at the films, not at the people. Everything is politics nowadays. Business is politics, education is politics, art is politics. That sucks. Why can't we just put aside our differences and pasts and just enjoy film and respect the people behind it for what they achieved? Think about it, please. - Marc, who doesn't like politics.
  5. Damn, I'm not even going to try this one...
  6. Hmm. I know. But then I only have 10 JW CD's, out of which 6 are SW, and both Harry Potters haven't even been used. Like I said, I can hardly call myself a collector, I'm merely a modest fan. - Marc, who wonders now why he entered.
  7. I should've know Wade's Death. I remember seeing a film, scored by John Williams, with a character named Wade, but I couldn't remember what it was.

  9. There's more oscar speculation going on on the internet. IGN Filmforce has an article about which films will probably take home the gold. Williams is up for CMIYC. http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/390/390041p1.html - Marc
  10. There indeed is a duet composed by a John Williams, but he is credited as (I think) John M. Williams. We all know our Johnny would be credited as just John Williams, or, if the middle initial was used, John T. Williams. Therefor, it is not the same JW as our JW. - Marc, who noticed it in the end credits to RtP.
  11. Awsome! Are you gonna post a picture of it here? I would love to play it once. - Marc, who thinks the name "Johnnyopoly" kicks ass!
  12. I have. Been playing Fawkes' theme all week. Having some trouble moving my left hand, though. But with a little more practice, I'll figure it out. - Marc, who'd like a music teacher like Ren.
  13. Hey, Ren. Looks cool. That's made in Finale, isn't it. I'd like a copy. Thank you. christiaanspar@hotmail.com
  14. The one I remember was very funny. It was a mix between live-action and puppets. I watched it on TV a long time ago, and I can't remember the full title anymore, but I remember seeing the duck with a really dumb face inside the wolf's stomach, lighting a match to see where he was. Funny stuff. - Marc, who posted that last two messages by Guest, because he was logged off for some odd reason.
  15. I've taken it a second time. Now I'm Shore. I think that sums up my personality a bit better, whereas Goldsmith's discription bares some more resemblance to my "professional" side. - Marc, wondering wether he really has a "professional" side. Jurassic Park DVD playing in BG
  16. I'm Goldsmith. Huh? - Marc, who has never heard anything by Goldsmith outside of a movie.
  17. Prokofjef - Peter en de Wolf verteld door Leoni Jansen A Philips Digital Classics CD from 1989. Code 412 554-2. The Nutcracker's Suite was recorded in June of 1983, Peter and the Wolf in 1985. The album was produced by John McClure. - Marc, who doubts this album is still in print. Within You Without You from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (The Beatles)
  18. This morning, I was going through my CD's, and I stumbled upon the very first one I ever owned. It was the tale of Peter and the Wolf, accompanied by Prokofjef's music (perhaps an odd first CD to get for someone who's six years old, but anyway...). It also had the Nutcracker's Suite by Tsjaikofski on it. I'm guessing I was about six when I got this CD, so that would probably be about nine years ago. So I was looking at this CD, turned it over, read who performed it, and what did I read? "JOHN WILLIAMS en de BOSTON POPS"!!! I couldn't believe my eyes! So it looks like Jurassic Park wasn't the first JW CD I got (I got it about 1,5 years ago), but this one, THE FIRST CD I EVER GOT! I was totally amazed. This CD has gained a new emotional value to me. - Marc, very happy with this news. Fixing A Hole from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (The Beatles)
  19. Oh yeah, Good Morning is cool. I used to listen to that every morning when I woke up in my holidays. It just gives you so much energy to wake up to that song. - Marc, who will now go downstairs and take out his copy of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and just play the damn CD!
  20. The first Prisoner of Azkaban picture has popped up on the internet. It's a picture of the Knight Bus: It's kinda dark, but The Sun has an artice on its website, which has a good picture of the triple decker. Looks like the Art Department is going to pull it off again in HP 3. - Marc, who already looks forward to PoA, as it is his favourite book so far. But first the CoS DVD, and the OotP book! A Promise Kept from Titanic
  21. And TTT should also have been nominated for Best Make-Up. - Marc Death of Titanic from Titanic
  22. Yeah, but I won't be surprised if they win, though. TTT is a sequel, and AOTC was done by ILM, which has been snubbed for years, so they probably make another idiotic decision and vote for Spider-Man. - Marc, who thinks TTT should at least have received a nomination for Gollum's Song. The Sinking from Titanic
  23. I don't get this. There is absolutely no structure in this article. What is her point, really? That Kamen received two Oscar nominations? Well, Williams has received FORTY-TWO, so big deal. And since when is E.T. a big, brassy, bombastic score? Please woman, get your sources right! - Marc, ticked off. Rose from Titanic
  24. Singing about something is not by definition promoting something. It's not like they're telling you to go out and shag the first thing you see. I do not agree with RomanticStrings, nor do I fully understand what made you come to this opinion, but you are still entitled to one of your own, and everyone has the right to explain their opinion. I'll just leave it at that. - Marc, who thinks Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help from My Friends is far, far inferior to the Beatles', but doesn't mind Stefancos saying the opposite.
