  1. Tough one. I will be ecclectic, but here goes.

    1) JS Bach

    2) Ralph Vaughan Williams

    3) David Bowie

    4) Einojuhani Rautavaara

    5) The Beatles

    6) Kraftwerk

    7) Dmitri Shostakovich

    8) John Williams

    9) Miles Davis

    10) Klaus Schulze

Tomorrow this list may look very different, but the top three will stay the same.

  2. The fingerprints your hearing on both are Sir Williams Walton's, who was a big influence on Williams's Star Wars sound. R8P3 Lando's Palace as proven the leaked sketches is of his hand, no one else's.

The Walton sound is certainly there in both. It's a very "English" sound. Morley's music is definitely a direct descendant of Walton. The reason the Lando theme makes me think of Morley is that I've never heard anything even remotely similar in style in any other pieces by Williams. It definitely stands out, not only in the Star Wars scores, but in all Williams scores.

Morley is an orchestrator, just like Conrad Pope, Eddie Karam, Herbert Spencer, John Neufeld, etc...

What's the big deal? We all know JW lets others orchestrate his scores... They don't say things like "yeah, the trombones will play this, the trumpets that" or whatever. John Williams writes the music.

Actually that's exactly what an orchestrator does. What you're describing is a copyist. If all the "orchestrator" had to do was copy notes from one piece of paper to another, why employ such established composers as Morley, Courage, Pope etc for the task? Why not just get a high school music student to do it?

As any serious composer knows, orchestration is a part of the process of composing. It is absolutely a creative act. It is not simply a question of copying notes, there is an artistic craft to it. A little more respect for the orchestrators, please!

  3. Any fans of The Goon Show will know Wally Stott's music, as he was composer, arranger, and conductor for all the classic Goon Shows. Then he became Angela Morley and composed some beautiful film music. I still firmly believe that Morley worked on the Lando's Palace cue from TESB. It sound far more like Morley's music from Watership Down than anything by John Williams! Morley: great composer. Nice article, Augie.

  4. What a sorry-looking bunch of films! The only one I'm really interested in seeing is Prometheus, so I voted for that. Yes, I'm the silly clot who didn't vote for Batman. I'm 99.9% positive I'll be proved wrong, but I can still hope. Batman Begins was pretty poor IMO. The Dark Knight was excellent, but so much of it's "charm" came from Heath's portrayal of The Joker. It remains to be seen whether a Joker-less Batman can pull the kinds of crowds TDK pulled.

  5. I suppose they could have named each season after its specific book title. That's what the English miniseries of "House of Cards" did. The second series was "To Play the King", and the third series "The Final Cut". Three excellent series by the way, just in case anyone here hasn't seen them.

BTW Haven't seen Game of Thrones yet. I'm thinking of picking up the blu ray of season 1 and giving it a shot. Maybe when it comes down in price a little. Say around thirty bucks.

  6. Although we ARE missing the first two minutes of series 3, episode 12! For some reason the sketch, which was shown when the episode was first broadcast, was dropped from all subsequent repeats, and from all VHS and DVD releases. All official versions of this episode begin with the opening title music and skip the pre-credits sketch and animation. WHY? A poor quality version of the sketch can be seen here:

  7. Unfortunately we did lose most of Not Only But Also, despite Peter Cook offering to pay for the tapes to prevent them from being wiped. I can't imagine the pain of seeing your work destroyed, and being told there's nothing you can do about it. Apparently the Beeb couldn't sell him the tapes because of the legal issues. Because other actors, cameramen, and musicians worked on the episodes they would all have to give permission for Peter to buy the tapes. It's bloody stupid. I'm sure they'd have all given permission if they'd known the only other option was for the episodes to be wiped.

  8. I don't really see the Prequels ever getting an expanded release. Not to say I wouldn't snatch it up if it were released though! The Harry Potters are too recent for expanded releases also IMO. I think (and hope!) we get an expanded Dracula. I love the recent 2-disc set of "The Fury". Let's get the same for Dracula. Disc 1=full score, Disc 2=remastered original soundtrack album. Jaws 2 would also be very welcome.

Call me crazy, but I'd really like to see better quality and/or expanded releases of Earthquake and The Eiger Sanction as well. Two slightly dated but excellent and HUGELY under-appreciated scores.

There's already an excellent release of The Towering Inferno. Would a re-release really have that much more music than the incredible FSM set?

  9. Haha! You remember seeing Evil of the Daleks? And I thought I was old-school! My first episode was Invasion of the Dinosaurs, so you've got about 7 years on me. I envy you having seen "Evil" though. Even though you probably have very little memory of it, it's an amazing story and I can only imagine how cool it would have been to see. I have the Loose Cannon recon "on order" so I'll be able to watch it in that format soon. I can't wait! I listened to the BBC-Audio version with Frazer Hines narration a few months back and I was gripped even then. But of course, it only makes me more angry that the BBC junked the episodes in the first place! Did Leonardo junk his paintings when he ran out of attic space? Did The Beatles wipe their early mono albums in order to make new stereo ones? What were the BBC thinking??? :D

  10. Ok, I haven't received my Hook yet (hopefully later today!) so I can't comment on the music yet. But I do have a few brief comments on the last few pages of this thread. First, like most people here I am thrilled that this got released at all. Kudos to La La Land for doing this. In return for your hard work on this, you have my hard-earned dollars, and rightly so. You guys rock! However, I also understand the frustration from those fans who were holding out for a complete release. The frustration has nothing to do with La La Land's hard work and efforts in making the current release happen. Rather it's to do with the fact that, because of this release, it is highly unlikely that Hook will ever get another official CD release. As far as the Hook score getting a complete release goes, this is it. This is as good as it's ever going to get. And that is a crushing disappointment to many. I'm sure LLL did a great job, and I can't wait to hear it. However, this release has effectively dashed all hopes of a complete score ever being released (at least for the foreseeable future). So let's all have a big group hug and go easy on everyone. I say "Splunge" (which means "well done La La Land, great CD, I love the extra music, but also let me be sad and disappointed that I will never get the rest of it. Or perhaps It's a great-idea-but-possibly-not-and-I'm-not-being-indecisive!"...)

  11. I should probably just keep my mouth shut and wait until we get a trailer that isn't so obviously focused on the Western episode before making any predictions. Yes I moan and groan a lot, but that's because Dr Who is still my favourite show and so the smallest faults tend to seem gigantic. I get a little too close to it, I guess.

  12. I guess I am more aware of it being English myself. It's the kind of pandering to Americans that Hugh Grant used to do a lot back in the 90s. Hugh personified that bumbling sort of English stereotype in films like Four Weddings, and Notting Hill. Much as I love both those films, I find my teeth clench whenever Hugh Grant does his "look how jolly English and quaint I am" routine. Much like Rory in season 6, in fact. "Don't shoot don't shoot. Very much not in need of being shot!" Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm just blaming the massive shortcomings of season 6 on the American influence.
