Sorry to be such an annoying know-it-all but the chord you are refering to isn't an augmented 6th. The flat 6 is there but not the raised 4. The chord is actually a flat-VI 7 (borrowed) over a pedal V. Welcome to JWFan. I'm not always this annoying BTW. Pixie

Probably my favourite Beethoven. Marian - I think the entire seventh symphony is Beethoven's finest. Reading the comments above about Beethoven's music crossing the line between classical and romantic, it's interesting to remember that the rough dates for the classical period, 1750-1827, show us that Beethoven is generally regarded as the last classical composer. However, as has been pointed out, his music is so far advanced that his voice was strongly felt throughout the next hundred years. His third symphony is clearly romantic, possibly the first romantic symphony by anyone.

I don't think John Williams-scored films are noted for their subtle acting. -
Thanks for the link guys. I got the CD a couple of days back and I really like it. The whole disk is superb, not only the Williams. Fanfare (Hugo Montengro)

Good question. I also wonder if the pianist on Earthquake is Johnny himself.

Damn! How did you get such cool family and friends???? I'm jealous.

I remember this time of change very well! LP or CD! My story is similar to yours. In 1988 I couldn't find the Return of the Jedi score on vinyl anywhere so I bought the CD. It was my first ever CD and it was another 6 months or so before I finally bought a CD player to play it on! When I finally heard the CD I was blown away by the sound, but very disappointed with the music. The 11-track OST wasn't all that exciting really was it?

How excited are you about Ep.3, the score?

And Ken Wannberg.

What equipment do you compose on?

Ah, I thought this was going to be a "Finale vs Sibelius" thread. I use Sibelius 1.4. I used Finale for years and I hated it. Sibelius is SO much easier to use. -
I do, it robs music of all the magic it has. Does the trick become any more fun when you know how the magician saw that women in two? That's a fair opinion if you are not a musician. If any musician shares your view then boy are they in the wrong career.

TJ Poll #3 - Other kind of music you listen to?
pixie_twinkle replied to John McClane's topic in General Discussion
I like GOOD music, whatever genre. I picked classical just because I listen to it the most and have more classical CDs. Here are my music Gods: John Williams Dmitri Schostakovich Ralph Vaughan Williams Arnold Bax Einojuhani Rautavaara David Bowie Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac Jean Michel Jarre Kraftwerk Miles Davis Bob Dylan Oh, and I like Abba. Sue me. -
Ouch, you don't want to scare him away! Maybe start with orchestral highlights from these operas before buying the whole thing. I find the prelude to act 1 of Lohengrin to be beautiful music. When I first heard there was to be a movie of LOTR I imagined this as the opening credits music. It swells to two climaxes. The first would accompany the title "Lord of the Rings" on the screen, the second as the camera sweeps over the hills and we see the Shire for the first time. Of course my hopes for a great romantic score were dashed by Howard Shores noodlings. The music for the Fellowship of the Ring was a massive disappointment to me. Not least because I'd imagined Wagner!

Surely if you are stretching the word "classical" to include Renaissance and Baroque you have to include 20th century as well. The word either means the period (roughly 1750-1827), or ALL art-music. You cannot pick and choose which art-music to include through personal preference.

TJ Poll #2 - Which is your favourite "unusual" JW'

Witches of Eastwick. Closely followed by Spacecamp, The Fury, Stanley and Iris and Empire of the Sun. I agree with King Mark that Spacecamp is very underrated. No it's not just that I paid a small fortune for the CD! I think it is a very warm and rich score. It presents that unmistakable Williams sound in a way that is more succinctly obvious than most of his other scores. It's a score that wears it's heart on it's sleeve. I would have voted for it but Witches is a notch higher. I just felt compelled to defend it though! -
I was 10. My parents bought me the Empire Strikes Back double LP for Christmas 1980. I was miserable, I had wanted the record with the dialogue and sound effects on it like my best friend had. My parents got the wrong thing, who wants boring old score music anyway??? Well of course I put the record on and my world changed there and then. I still have cassettes from 25 years ago of me and my friend re-enacting the Empire Strikes Back and making up our own adventures with the ESB soundtrack playing in the background as our score. One day I may pick up the courage to listen to my "space adventures" tapes again. Of course the double LP is a little scratched and worn out now, but it got me into John Williams. In fact part of me wishes someone would issue the original double LP on CD, edits and all. Some of those cuts and cue-mergings worked really well. In fact there was one track "The Adventures of Luke and Han" which combined the music from Luke's fight with the Wampa with "escape from Hoth" music. I still hear the OST edit when I listen to the proper score. I LIKED it damnit!!!

Shark Cage is very good, especially the extended version on the Williams/Spielberg collaboration CD. Unfortunately the arrangement of the Jaws Main Title on that CD is pretty awful (What the hell is that ending all about????)

Changes to Star Wars trilogy on DVD?

Isn't there supposed to be a press-release sometime around now? -
With those looks he can only play villains or elves.

OK OK, I don't care what anyone says. Roger Moore ROCKED as James Bond! I think he's easily as good as Connery but in a very different style. Moore was actually Ian Flemming's original choice to play Bond, but it went to Connery instead. I just wanted to stand up for Roger, the only English actor to play the role. BTW My fave Bond films are: 1 From Russia With Love 2 The Spy Who Loved Me 3 You Only Live Twice 4 On Her Majesty's Secret Service 5 Goldeneye

It is a little expensive. Still, I figure it's not that much more than a typical English CD so I ordered it. SeekUYoda if you didn't get a copy maybe I can burn you one. Let me know if you want me to. Greater love hath no man than to pay 30 bucks for a CD then burn free copies for his friends.

Disrespectful or not, it would explain why Luke pulls that face when he tries eating the "food" Yoda has prepared. -
I have been looking for the CD. Anyone know where to find it?

Ewan McGreggor. Yup! Daniel Day Lewis might be good too. There was a time when Hugh Grant was being considered. Thank God that fell through.

Hi there. Well I did as you asked and registered with the site. It took me about 2 hours to download your pieces with my 28.8 speed dial-up, but I'm glad I did! I am very impressed! You have a real gift for orchestration and know your medium very well. You clearly have a good ear. I'm listening through "Space" as I type. This is my favourite of the two as it seems a little more personal. I can imagine these pieces were very well received when they were performed, they are real crowd-pleasers! I have recently been commissioned to write a celebratory work for three orchestras combined (!!!) which is rather a daunting task. I have never written celebration music before and I'm impressed ta how naturally it seems to come to you. The John Williams connection is there (it's very obvious in "Spirit"!), but hey, that's a good thing right? I know there are many "Williams-moments" in my own music. Also, don't get too down about the performance, I think these performances are actually pretty convincing. There were a few ensemble issues in "Spirit in Motion" but not enough to ruin the feeling of celebration or to cause the "spirit" to stop moving. If you have any other pieces I'd like you to add them to your page. Have you tried to get these published? They both deserve a wider audience IMO.
