I ordered this two days ago from Quartet (the day it was released). Although I received a message from Paypal saying that I sent payment, I have had no confirmation e-mail, or any communication at all from Quartet, and the money has not come out of my account yet. Now that it has sold out at Quartet I am nervous that my order wasn't processed. I really don't want to miss out on this release, so I went and bought a copy from SAE just to be safe. So now I probably have two copies of this disc, all because Quartet failed to send a confirmation e-mail. I am not happy at all.

Ordered. Total cost in US dollars came to $33.75. Not cheap, but not bad for a limited edition item shipped from Spain.
Miguel, looks like the doorbell isn't included

-
Thanks for the info Miguel. I'll definitely be ordering this. They are a Spanish label. 8 a.m. in Spain will be like 2 a.m. EST.
I just got from them a couple of copies of Nuno Malo's wonderful new score to "Miel de Naranjas" and 12.95 euros for each disc, plus 6 euros for shipping to Portugal (I would have payed that for up to 4 discs in a single order, which doesn't sound too expensive, though it's a bit for a single disc...)
-
Never even heard of Quartet records until I saw this. What do they tend to charge for single-disc releases? $24.99 plus shipping, I hope? I will be ordering this first thing tomorrow (providing they are on EST).

Not to mention the fantasic tongue-in-cheeck score to 2009's "The Informant", which set the entire mood for the film. Rest in peace, Sir.

A small observation on the music: both the new films and this series seem to tap into the off-kilter Eastern European instruments and a bit unbalanced themes to represent Holmes and his investigations. I guess genious is always somewhat unhinged musically.

Primarily the hammered dulcimer, also used in the theme music to Dexter, and the underrated (and subsequently cancelled after one series) Dirk Gently.

Tom Baker will never die. He'll just turn into Peter Davison.

What a devestating Summer it has been for Doctor Who. Last month Caroline John (Liz Shaw) passed away, and now Mary Tamm has died of cancer at just 62.

All this just a year after the wonderful Lis Sladen died. These women were all a big part of my childhood, and will be sorely missed.

Are any of the remaining scores likely to be released soon? I know there can be licensing issues if certain CD companies don't own the rights to market the music. I hope LLL or Intrada has the rights to the remaining three.

So which Star Trek scores still need an expanded release now? Am I right in thinking only Generations, Insurrection, and Nemesis need expanded scores?

I don't see a difference.My copy arrived today!

I haven't had the chance to listen yet. Did anybody else get an insert in a little cardboard envelope? It looks like something that should have an autograph on it, but of course does not.
Read the spine of the copy you got carefully, then compare to the reprinted version you got in the envelope
Oh. Never mind I see it.

Okay, so I've finally jumped on the bandwagon. My wife bought me the first 4 books for my birthday erlier this year and after reading the first two I realized we HAD to buy the blu ray. I'm halfway through book 3, and we're about to watch episode 10 of season 1 while eating homemade eggplant and meat lasagne and drinking Pinot Grigio. The books and TV show are both spectacularly fun! I hear books 4 and 5 are a bit less action-packed. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Wow, I really expected this poll to go the other way. From my experience most people prefer the action-packed Aliens to its darker, more terrifying predecessor. I'm really glad to see the original getting props in this poll. Both films are great, but the original is truly the stuff of nightmares. A complete absence of shouty and whiny marines in the original is also a plus.

Now I should probably pick up Star Trek VI too. Maybe next month. Doubt that one will sell out for a year or so.
-
No Return Of The Jedi? Wow. That's harsh.
He gets almost nothing to work with in Jedi, so I can understand why it isn't on the list.
I went with Bladerunner. His best films are Raiders, Star Wars, and Empire, but if we're judging his performance alone I think Bladerunner shows off his acting talents slightly better.
Surprised Hannover Street isn't on the list, though it's a pretty dull film.

You missed my wink. I was being facetiousAt 1:01 in Leia, it's definitely not the flutes. It rings again in 1.05 but shorter, it was obviously shut down.
-
That wasn't a phone ringing. It was actually the flutes. It does sound like a phone ringing though.

Dude, it's the violas. When the rest of the orchestra stops at 3:48 you can clearly hear it was the violas all the time. It's one of those amazing aural illusions. Yes, it sounds like a few women singing, but it's really the violas.
If you want to hear a really freaky aural illusion listen to Ligeti's Lux Aeterna. It's for unaccompanied choir, but in places you'll be sure you can hear all sorts of other instruments in there!

Great stuff!
Although the conductor in this version looks like he needs a shot of adrenalin!

A string player is found dead in the road, apparently the victim of a hit and run driver. Without opening the instrument case lying next to the body the police inspector says "It's a viola player". The sergeant says "How do you know it's a violist not a violinist? The inspector says "There are no skid marks in front of the body."
-
Hey, let's not get too crazy now. You keep heading down this road, sooner or later you'll have to start crediting the Angela Morleys of the world, and we know how horrible it would be to impugn the absolute nature of Williams' artistic autonomy.
-
But that's just human nature. Especially for collectors! But does that mean we should not discuss them? I feel like we discuss more what isn't out, or could be coming out, then we do what is out
I enjoyed Gremlins. Great release. I hadn't realized quite how much synthesizer featured in the score. I got a little tired of that "cat howl" ghost-house noise that keeps popping up, but it certainly adds to the sense of fun.

Tough one. I will be ecclectic, but here goes.
1) JS Bach
2) Ralph Vaughan Williams
3) David Bowie
4) Einojuhani Rautavaara
5) The Beatles
6) Kraftwerk
7) Dmitri Shostakovich
8) John Williams
9) Miles Davis
10) Klaus Schulze
Tomorrow this list may look very different, but the top three will stay the same.
Hey I'm glad to see my finnish "friend" Einojuhani so high in your list, Pixie. Johnny should be next to other John though, Bach that is ...
Aha! But I'm English. There's no way anyone comes close to moving me in quite the same way that Vaughan Williams does. With the obvious exception of the most phenomenal composer who ever lived, JSB!

My bank account has now been charged twice by Paypal, so it looks like I'll be getting two copies. Still no confirmation e-mail from Quartet though. Oh well. Maybe I'll try to sell the other on Amazon or E-bay.
