lairdo got a reaction from Chewy in SPACECAMP (1986) - NEW! 2022 2-CD Intrada Records
Actually, that is an image of Atlantis Challenger (good spotting @crumbs) as seen from the Space Station. The image is not from the movie. The marks are used to measure things in the image and are present in the original. That image shows something in the back of the payload bay of the orbiter, and in the film, the bay is empty. But, bizarrely, besides cropping the image, the artist actually flipped the direction of the craft (presumably to represent the sense of going back to earth as is the main drama of the 2nd half of the movie). You can see in the original image the clouds and coastline are the same, but the orbiter correctly points upwards in the process of docking.

Ooh thanks for that @lairdo I think I may go ahead and order. Can’t think of too many printed magazines with JW on the cover.

I think after the next issue (e.g. August 2022), you can email to order a back issue.
https://www.magsubscriptions.com/back-issues
Shipping to the US from the UK might be as much as the cost of the issue.
I am not sure, but I think Barnes & Noble (if you have one nearby) carries Gramophone in single issues. I just don't know the lag between the UK publication date and the arrival on US shelves.
Update: Just found Newsstand.co.uk will take orders for the JW July issue which they show as arriving on June 15 to their shop. Look at this page (which is for the June issue). There is a small line where one can add the July issue to the shopping cart. The company ships worldwide. About US$15 for an issue including 1st class postage.

lairdo got a reaction from Yavar Moradi in Way Back When... Gramophone September 1972 John T. Williams Sinfonietta
In the new cover story in July 2022's Gramophone issue featuring the Concertos of John Williams, the author references that the Sinfonietta of 1965 was released in 1972 and reviewed that year by the magazine. Curious, I found the old issue - nearly 50 years old - online.
https://reader.exacteditions.com/issues/33101/spread/1
Here are the two pages extracted that talk about Williams. The first page is from there updates section on composers and musical artists. The second page features the review of the disc itself. Alas, the reviewer was not really impressed.
I rather like the album (which is long out of print but copies can be found on LP and much more rarely on CD from Japan). It's an early exploration by Williams and just before the Symphony which we will likely never get to hear.

One of the rare times I can say I live where this was recorded!
I wish they’d reissue the CD.

Ah, yes. Certainly from the same session though.

"Now look to the right, Masetro. Ok, that's great. Maybe slightly wistful now? Yes, that's it. A bit to the left. Think of those Christmas Cookies from Anne-Sophie... but maybe less delight, perhaps a bit of the guilt about needing to compose some notes? Yes, yes, yes! That's brilliant. You're a star, baby!"

lairdo got a reaction from Once in Gramophone July 2022 - John Williams' Concertos feature article
Following last week's podcast interview between James Jolly and John Williams, out today is Gramophone's July 2022 issue featuring John Williams on the cover. I believe this is the first time he has ever been on the cover of this venerable classical music magazine although of course not the first time he has been written about in the magazine. (Anne-Sophie Mutter was on the cover following the release of Across the Stars in 2019.)
Andrew Farach-Colton writes about William's long history of writing concerti and contains quotations from Leonard Slatkin, Yo-Yo Ma and Anne-Sophie Mutter (but none directly from Williams). The article is a nice survey with particular focus on the first violin concerto (and a bit on the flute), the cello concerto (both versions) and the tuba concerto. Prelude and Fugue (1965) and Sinfonietta (also 1965) get passing mentions as early works. (The author suggests that the latter, recording for DG around 1970, deserves a reissue.)
Nothing really overly revealing within the article although it is a nice read and points to some of the technics (12 tone writing) and how the concerto pieces tend to be without a lot of melody. However, Farach-Colton does note the various influences he senses on Williams - Penderecki and Walton for example.
The issue also contains a combined review of both recent releases - A Gathering of Friends and Violin Concerto No. 2. Alas, neither merits an editor's choice award for the month. In fact, the review feels more descriptive of the discs contents than analytic of the quality.
Oddly - but maybe not - the editor in chief's monthly introduction section contains no mention of the feature article at all instead featuring layout changes within the magazine.

lairdo got a reaction from bollemanneke in John Williams & Berliner Philharmoniker 14th/15th/16th Oct 2021
My SACD arrived Wednesday but just picked it up today from the PO Box. Listening now, and of course it sounds great. Probably not any better than my HiRes Audio and certainly not having multichannel is a bummer. So, really, just a nice collector's item. I've been collecting the Japanese releases since the Vienna concert.
Yeah, the cut them down to 0. The Japanese audio versions do not include the speeches at all. I think this was the case for the CD release but I believe the Blu-ray video version has them subtitled.

lairdo got a reaction from Madmartigan JC in "A Gathering of Friends" Williams / Yo Yo Ma album with Pablo Sainz-Villegas & Jessica Zhou
I agree about seeing it live. I wonder if that might actually happen and where. One can hope nearby and that it is streamed on video and even released.
As for the mastering, I feel that the loud sections then the timpani sounds are pretty much crushed. Those moments sound ragged, something that could not possibly happen when hearing it live. I just don't get why those mastering it needed to max it out in such a fashion. There are creative uses for such things in many audio situations - I think Platoon's movie sound mix is deliberately distorted in places to add to the sense of war and horror. Certainly many types of rock music are at max volume too. I find it very odd.
But even with that, listening to the music is a a great experience. For me with the cello concerto, the music is first rate. My 2nd listening reinforced that I like this version very much. I understand the enjoyment of the original's opening with a triumphant flourish, but this new version starting more quietly, almost magically, is lovely. I very much like this revision, and it is almost like 2nd cello concerto other than using the same themes. Maybe a version 1.5.
The other tracks are appropriate to the album. As I wrote earlier, this version of Highwood's Ghost is not as appealing to me as the one on the Bernstein 100 Blu-ray. That's not to say I don't like it here. Just the one with the Boston Symphony sounds more coherent. Perhaps it is the mastering issue since the big orchestra section is not compromised sonically on that recording.
What's interesting about the Schilndler's List suite and the Lincoln and Munich's tracker is that they seem closer to tone and spirit with the cello concerto and Highwood. While the cello and Highwood venture into musical tones and ideas that rarely feature in Williams' film pieces, all 10 tracks fit cohesively here in terms of seriousness and in a straight play through. I think that does not happen as much with Markings on the deluxe Across the Stars album as that piece seems to be too different from the film arrangements proceeding it. It will be interesting to hear how Violin Concerto No. 2 feels followed by the 3 film arrangements on that upcoming album.
Overall, mastering aside (and I wish the issues on CD were not also in the digital versions, but they are), A Gathering of Friends is a treat and a lovely, long overdue, follow up to Yo-Yo Ma Plays the Music of John Williams.

Agreed on points 1 and 2.
Oh my on the off topic one of Thriller. For sure that is one I will get! My first three CDs were bought in 1984 (yes I was an early adopter):
1. Star Wars OST
2. 1821 Overture by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops
3. Thriller(!)
I know exactly where I bought them too (although the store is long gone).

Yeah, I figured that was the case. Even so, I ordered it. Will arrive on Thursday.
Now we'll see if Violin Concerto No. 2 gets the SACD treatment too. (I am guessing perhaps at the same time as the Blu-ray release.)
By the way, Atmos mix on Tidal is quite nice. Not overly aggressive in the surrounds, but still atmospheric. I assume the Apple Music version is the same mix and likely that is what we will get on the Blu-ray too.

lairdo got a reaction from Will in Williams composing fanfare for the Hollywood Bowl centennial - "Centennial Overture"
I have watched them both. I would say the 2nd one is maybe a bit less cluttered with extraneous sounds and people walking by, but this one is more muddy unfortunately.
Still, the piece is really different and the same simultaneously. I feel that JW was trying to capture all of the types of music the orchestras have played at the Bowl. So, you get some of the rousing fanfare pieces, the more eclectic rhythmic elements perhaps representing some of the 20th century composers, and of course, as noted earlier, Hurray for Hollywood - which even though I knew it was coming still made me laugh.
Hard to imagine how this gets released unless someone commissions something like "The LA Philharmonic Plays John Williams Concert Hall Pieces" (lame title, I know) and then they collect things like this, Soundings (which has no audio only release), the Oscars piece, maybe better recordings of the concerti that Slatkin never had a chance to do. There's probably 2 hours of music that could use some really excellent playing. Or of course, if they wanted to do a "John Williams Live at the Hollywood Bowl" from his 3 concerts this year, that could be cool! Maybe we could get the the TROS suite finally!
