What is the last score you listened to?
Goldsmithfan replied to HPFAN_2's topic in General Discussion
It's got a very nice main theme, but I've never been that impressed with the score as a whole. And the synths are definately not Goldsmith-esque. I remember there's some synths on one cue on the CD that sound like someone was squeezing ducks. Still better than Zimmer though, definately. I agree that the score as a whole isn't hugely impressive, but it's definitely a solid one. The cue "Alex's First Test" is so different from the typical sci-fi action cue. So rarely do composers try to add beauty to a piece of music intended for battle, but it always adds something special to the work as a whole. I really like Safan's use of electronics. Probably because they're not Goldsmith-esque. And the "duck" synth was intended for one of the goofier scenes so that was certainly intentional. Well, not necessarily sounding like a duck, but sounding less serious. -
Just why did it disappear so fast? It was an excellent release, but it departed way too soon. What's the story?

The Last Starfighter. Makes me wish Safan would take over more of the action/adventure genre instead of the Hans Zimmer replicants. -
It's annoying as hell to have that music associated with watching the news. "Coverage you can count on!" [Tryouts in the background] Gimme a break.

That much is certain... Unless we're talking about Dr. Seuss . . . -

This brings up a question I've been wondering for a little while. Why do people get so bent outa shape when others mistakenly refer to tracks from a score album as "songs". It's not really an accurate term for them, but it's not gonna hurt anybody. [Now I'm waiting for the arrows] -
What is the Last Film You Watched? - Part II
Goldsmithfan replied to Lurker's topic in General Discussion
I found it entertaining too, but for a different reason. I went with a couple of women friends of mine who decided, at the last minute, to see it instead of Premonition. About forty minutes into the movie, I was disgusted at how terrible a film it was. Then I looked to my left and realized that both ladies were slouched down in their chairs, terrified. I slouched too and decided to tease the girl closest to me. She kept telling me not to laugh at her, but it was hysterical to watch her hands creep from her mouth up to her eyes, before parting her fingers so she could watch what was happening on screen. I was more entertained by that than the movie! -
The 50 Best Soundtracks ... kind of
Goldsmithfan replied to Trumpeteer's topic in General Discussion
I enjoy Blade Runner quite a bit, but to see that and Shaft listed before a Goldsmith work of any kind is really gut-wrenching. Kinda makes me wanna vomit. -
It's a strange coencidence that this thread happened to be up when I clicked on the General Discussion page. Hearing about the new Von Ryan's Express DVD with an isolated score made me realize that new, expanded versions of that are probably going to start floating around. Not a problem for me!

Living near Notre Dame as I do often times sucks in terms of awkward uses of film music. For several months last year, any time a commercial for the news on our NBC affiliate popped up, so did "Tryouts" from Rudy. Drove me nuts for some reason. I'm glad it's over . . . for now.

Hagrid's Motif . . . a reworking of Jar Jar Binks' Theme
Goldsmithfan replied to Josh500's topic in General Discussion
That's odd. When I first heard Jar Jar's theme, I thought the first three notes sounded like the Ewok theme. -
I haven't seen a film at the theater in over a year. I'm actually going kind of insane. Last thing I saw: Wallace & Gromit in Curse of the Were-Rabbit. I still like A Close Shave the best. - My two cents for the day

Not to completely change the subject, but what exactly is Indy going to be looking for this time? Ark of the Covenant: DONE! Stones of Chumbawumba (can't remember what they're called): DONE! Holy Grail: DONE! So what's next? Two thirds of the main artifacts he looks for are Bible-related, so I tried starting there. I don't know if it's because I'm goofy, but the first thing that occurred to me was Noah's Ark. I don't know what magical power that would have. Maybe multiplying any object put inside it by two? Maybe he could look for the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch. (Or at least the box it was in before it blew up) I think there's enough mythology for him to dig through though. What about the Necronomicon Ex Mortus: Book . . . of the Dead! (Dramatic chord) Okay, that's a complete joke, but I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas. I don't know tons of mythology. But, considering George Lucas lately, maybe they'll cut corners and just name Indy's son Harry and have them look for the Scorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone.

Well, sunuvabitch! I really like that score!!!!

Muted trombones sound so angry it's not even funny. Goldsmith also put them to good use in some of his brassier early 80's material (Poltergeist comes to mind).

So are the tapes for Conan the Barbarian trashed or something? I keep hearing vague reports, but nothing very specific. If so . . . that really pisses me off!!!
-
Conan the Destroyer would be a really nice rerelease. Hopefully it's the original recording this time (the OST sounds completely different from what's in the film . . . or at least it seemed to the one time I watched the film). If anything, they should rerelease both Conan scores in expanded form.

Who ever said it was a director controlled system? Whoever it was, he had no idea what he was talking about. It is a 'driector's medium', certainly. But the word control rarely applies. I've heard many people refer to it as such. I responded with virtually the same thoughts as you. As much as directors should be in charge of their films, I doubt they ever will be.
-
That's funnier than it has any right to be.
-
Pardon my Latin, but that is absolute bullshit. The studio should have no say regarding the score or any other creative process in the film. They're just worried about how much money they're going to make, period. For this being the "director controlled system" it sure sounds like the studios still have the storytellers by the balls.

I'll definitely be on my toes Monday. Thanks.
