I love The Lost World. Don't get me wrong, Jurassic Park is fine, but The Lost World took it to a whole other level with it's darker mood. The first one is like, "Let's got have funn trying not to get killed by dinosaurs!" LOL Then The Lost World is pretty much like, "Oh my god. We're gonna go to this island and we're all gonna die . . . ALL OF US!" It's so much better it's not even funny. Although, the scene with the T-rex outside the kid's window is pretty lame. I think I'd have had the T-rex eat his parents, then the little turd wouldn't think it's so funny. Jurassic Park III on the other hand is absolute garbage. The first two flesh out their stories over two hours and change each . . . this one was basically Universal trying to capitalize on the name without really delivering anything really good. It's a half hour shorter than the first two, it has no finale, the list could go on and on. But I'll just stick with my one point. The ending! That's no kind of ending. Here, we'll give the raptors back their eggs and they'll leave us untouched. Then, instead of having one final real encounter with something or some other hitch in the plan, we'll get to the edge of the island and see a man in a business suit talking to us just as the Navy appears. Wow. Thanks Ellie. You must have presidential status or something to pull that rabbit outa your ass. And sadly, JP3 was the only one I saw at the theater.

That's probably the funniest random bit of dialogue found on an expanded score album. I remember the first time I heard it, I had to play it back a second time because I thought I was going nuts.

Alien Resurrection I don't have a DVD rom though so I can't put up a screenshot. I think I just broke a rule somewhere.

Are you a John Williams completist?
Goldsmithfan replied to robthehand's topic in General Discussion
I'm not even remotely a completist. That's not because I don't like Williams' music (why else would I be here?!?) but I usually get exposed to a score by watching the film it's used in. Sadly, I own very few Williams scores actually. (Star Wars Anthology, 2004 Rereleases, Episodes I-III, E.T. 20th Anniversary, Collector's Edition of Close Encounters, Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Superman: The Movie, Raiders, Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade and that's it) I'm not in the financial state to go out and get scores just because I like the composer, otherwise I'd probably have a lot more of everyone I like, so for now I'll have to stick to this. Oh, and grabbing as many CDs I can find when I go to the library. -
OT: Star Trek to get a Lucas-style makeover.
Goldsmithfan replied to robthehand's topic in General Discussion
If I remember correctly, the episodes of the original series were about 55 minutes in length. Considering the fact that the ratio of commercials in the U.S. is now 18 minutes for every hour of television, they "have" to make trims in order to fit it into an hour long time slot. I'll stick with watching it on G4 TV on Saturday mornings. -
Well how the f#%@ did I miss that?!? Well, I'm an idiot!

OT: Star Trek to get a Lucas-style makeover.
Goldsmithfan replied to robthehand's topic in General Discussion
Did anyone else see the redone version of Balance of Terror yesterday? I sat down to watch it, just for the hell of it, and boy are the new CGI shots pointless. They duplicated the crappy moves of the Enterprise 100% only in the computer. So now, instead of a crappy pass by a badly lit model, we have a crappy pass by a horribly rendered CGI model. Great job guys! You're earning your money's worth. Hell, the morons even used the CGI to make stock shots of the Enterprise's phaster bolts going into space, exactly like the stock shots used originally. If you're going to duplicate everything, even make the 'remastered' phaser shots utilize the same stock footage over and over again, just like it originally was, why bother? It just goes to show what happens when you're out of ideas. -
But KM, The Empire Strikes Back has (some) synths... 8O And do you mean all electronic instruments? What about theremins? Yeah, Williams' synths in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi are very good examples of synths put to good use.
-
I beginning to develope an aversion to orchestral scores. That's the spirit! "Fight the real enemy!" Wait . . . There are tons more good orchestral scores than there are all electronic scores. But that doesn't make electronics bad. It can go either way. Usually, if you're creative enough to write an orchestral score and augment it with electronics you've got enough crazy creativity in your head to make it work. However, it seems that many composers that only do electronic scores are the ones you gotta worry about. Or something like that. Luckily, they usually get stuck with low profile B-movies. I just don't get why electronics get such a bad rap. I mean, they're musical (unlike when a turntable is used as an 'instrument'; damn you for Mr. Baseball Jerry Goldsmith!!!). It just seems that a lot of JWfanners are really against synths or electronics as a whole. WEIRDOS!

The new Star Wars DVDs . . . Just how 'limited'?
Goldsmithfan replied to Goldsmithfan's topic in General Discussion
What he HELL was the point of that?!? "Hey guys! I got an idea! Hoth is cold right? Blue is a 'cool color' right? Howsabout we make the first shot of the inside of the rebel base BLUE!!!" -
The new Star Wars DVDs . . . Just how 'limited'?
Goldsmithfan replied to Goldsmithfan's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the information everyone. I should, hopefully, be able to grab them between now and December 31. I'm not really worried about the lack of 'special features' though, so that doesn't even figure in on this release for me. I've seen so many Star Wars documentaries I could probably make my own. But so could a lot of people here I bet. I just want to have the theatrical versions on DVD if I have to buy the SE with them. I haven't seen the 2004 version of the SE yet so I'll have to check those out . . . some time after I watch the theatrical versions. -
Hey everybody, I'm probably the only person on this board who doesn't already own Star Wars on DVD in any form. But anyway, I'm planning on getting the new 2 DVD sets that came out today because they've got the option of theatrical version or special edition. (Not going into that though) My one worry is the fact that I'm very, very short on cash right now and it's probably going to continue for some amount of time, so I was wondering if anyone knows just how 'limited' these limited editions will be . . . ? It's probably a stupid question, but I just wanted to see if anyone knows. Thanks!

While it's certainly not the most creative, unique or nuanced score, I wouldn't refer to the Evil Dead score as a bad one. (Sounds like a contradiction in terms doesn't it) It was LoDuca's first outing into film so of course it's going to be over-the-top and insane at points for a film like this, but it certainly works. The ensemble, made up of strings, percussion, synth, piano and accoustic guitar, may not be unique to the horror genre at all, but LoDuca made it his own. However, the way it works in the film is another story due to how butchered it was when it was mixed into the film. The 'Rape of the Vines' music was largely left out while the cue right after it, 'Panic', a lackluster attempt at best, was left in all its 'glory'. Far too much of the score was left out. The cue that practically begins and ends with Ash slamming the broken cellar door was meant to continue for about two minutes afterwards, going into new, more subtle, territory for the most part. I don't think Raimi knows how to leave a score alone. In any case, Evil Dead is a very laughable film, in my opinion, (I own it because of this fact) and the score is one of the best things going for it along with the cinematography. But uh yeah, the score to Army of Darkness is about thirty billion times better. I wouldn't say Blade Runner is a bad score either. Hmm . . . Considering many, many, many, many things I've read here I'm beginning to believe more and more that I'm one of the few people here that doesn't have some weird aversion toward electronics.

What the F*#% is the point of limited editions!?!
Goldsmithfan replied to Goldsmithfan's topic in General Discussion
I'm pretty sure it really is all about the money. They wanna sell as fast as possible without really thinking of those who put them in business in the first place: US! -
Golly gee, just yesterday I was made aware (by way of an email from Screen Archives) that the first ever legit 2 CD release of a Jerry Goldsmith score was released . . . of the score to Inchon! However . . . ! It was limited to 1500 copies! My question is, what is the point of releasing fairly popular scores in such limited numbers. It sold out like hotcakes for crying in a bucket! And I, with no money to speak of, was forced to watch in horror. But don't they realize that if they put it on a regular release they'd sell even more!?! I just don't understand the point. Same thing goes for Capricorn One. I could understand if it were a score with a very small fanbase (like a really unpopular B-movie type score or something) but this is getting ridiculous.

The first movie that comes to mind when I think of my favorite film is Flesh + Blood so I'll have to go with that. It's just so dark and realistic that it doesn't seem like an American film at all!

OT: Star Trek to get a Lucas-style makeover.
Goldsmithfan replied to robthehand's topic in General Discussion
I think the reason many people, including myself, say that is because of the fact that a very, very large amount of effects that could have been done with models was done with CGI (numerous space battles) and, despite the sets that were built, there were numerous sets that were all green so that they could be replaced at a later date. Episode III had the largest amount of this going on. In fact, if I remember correctly, the digital 'painters' had to refinish C-3P0's body in nearly every scene he was in so it wouldn't have any green reflections on it. It's basically the excessive use of computer animation, combined with digital composites, that make scenes look really fake. CGI rarely looks photorealistic and digital composites, while not having a matte line, have a very hard edge to them. Like every technology, digital effects have their drawbacks as well. Sadly, they're not as easy to gloss over because they have a tendancy to look so harsh. -

I've heard that by so many people with limited movie-fx knowledge, only to find them dumbfounded when I tell them "you know that _is_ a model at the start of Phantom Menace, both ships". I thought those ships looked far too detailed and just plain real to be CGI. Five points for me! -

 I have to agree with Joe you need to calm down and not take it so damn personally. Geezsus. I'm not really taking it personally. It's just pretty stupid to 'fix' the effects in a show that is usually watched for the camp factor in the first place. Although . . . If Gene and Alexander have nothing better to do, it would be pretty amusing. -

Goldsmithfan replied to robthehand's topic in General Discussion
There's really no point to this. Personally, I can't sit through very episodes of the original series without going nuts, but the ones I can watch I view merely for comedy effect. In any case, this is a waste of money. Who really watches the original Star Trek for the effects?!? Morons. It's just the jackasses that are running Star Trek into the ground finding a new way to destroy it even further. I hope Gene Roddenberry's ghost haunts them while they try to have sex. Maybe him and Alexander Courage could team up and scream the Star Trek theme at them while they try to have sex or something.
