Who should score the next Star Trek movie?
Goldsmithfan replied to Indiana_Fett's topic in General Discussion
First and foremost I'd say Basil Poledouris. He needs to score another big action film again! Joel Goldsmith worked wonders with the bits of First Contact that he scored. I think he would be another perfect candidate. Horner would probably work as well. It just might take a little coaxing to get him into the mode that's required for a Star Trek film. James Newton Howard might work as well. Elliot Goldenthal has quite a knack for strong themes and explosive action cues. If I were to make a Star Trek film he would be one of the first composers I'd go to. -
What is the last score you listened to?

The Lost World! I bought a used copy at the local CD store and . . . I'm not regretting it. Not that I thought I would. It's a LOT darker than the first score. And the crazy percussion in "Rescuing Sarah" and "The Raptors Appear" kind of reminded me of Predator 2. If the percussion in Predator 2 fit, that is. I had a serious problem with parts of that score. But that's another story. The Lost World is great. -
What I want to know is how did the music for the first trilogy get where it was intended to be (most of the time) only for Lucas to allow the prequel trilogy's scores to be tracked six ways from Sunday? If I were him, I'd watch Mr. Burt like a hawk.

The music was wonderful (and fit the film perfectly), but the way Obi-Wan watched as it happened made me laugh at the lunacy of the scene. C'mon! You love him like a brother and you're going to talk to him during the immolation rather than take his head off and put him out of his misery. Obi-Wan, I would have killed you on the Deathstar too!

I agree. I've been thinking of his score to Dutch lately. It would be nice for a limited release. It's not all that popular, but still deserving of an official pressing.

Hell yes! Marian - 8O In Dreams (Elliot Goldenthal) The only reason I even questioned it is because I've only seen that film two or three times and don't remember much of the score. -

Jurassic Park. I haven't listened to that score in a WHILE. Too long actually. It's a lot better than I remember it being. Not to say that I thought it was bad. Which brings me to my next point. I still haven't gotten The Lost World. They've got that at the local used CD place. Should I get it? -
2001 - A Space Odyssey - The Missing Reel...
Goldsmithfan replied to Greg1138's topic in General Discussion
I had never heard this, but it would be nice now to have some sort of speical edition DVD with the transcriptions as an extra......and....maybe......Alex North's alternate score???? .....or is that really hoping for too much.....?? I'd love to hear North's score en contexto! . . . Even though it's not complete. -

New Varese Sarabande Club releases
Goldsmithfan replied to Mr. Breathmask's topic in General Discussion
Give me a break! If you don't like what Varese (and any other specialty film music label, for that matter) releases, don't buy them. You are entitled to your opinion, but calling the CDs which you have no interest in "pointless" and "a bunch of garbage" is ridiculous. What you find a waste of a release, someone else may have been waiting decades to own! And they're forever grateful that Varese/FSM/Intrada/etc. spent money and effort to make available. We have become such spoiled brats. To ask why so-and-so didn't release such-and-such truly is pointless. Save your money and move on. Don't lecture me. You're no authority. People have been saying things like this repeatedly on this board and they never got lectured so stop trying to assume a high and mighty stance with me. I've got my opinion just like everyone else. I WILL save my money. That's the essence of free will. However, I think it's ridiculous to release so many small/unknown scores AT THE SAME TIME! I'll continue to call the releases whatever the hell I want. Why?!? Because this is a message board filled with opinions on things. If no one stated their opinion, it would be pointless. That's why I said those things, but then put them in a joking context. But it seems you forgot how to read half way through my post. Now, if you're done trying to lecture people el Senor God of the Internet, I'd like to move on with my life . . . and I hope you will too. -
New Varese Sarabande Club releases
Goldsmithfan replied to Mr. Breathmask's topic in General Discussion
One thing I thought would be cool, although completely unrealistic, would have been a COMPLETE version of Episode I. But that's not in Varese's jurisdiction most likely. It would have been cool though. But I'd rather have it not be a limited release. And when the time comes, I know it won't be. Whenever that time may be . . . And who's gonna release Back to the Future. I've always doubted Varese, but what about Prometheus or La-La Land!?! C'mon guys! It would sell like hotcackes! Remember when they released Predator! -

Goldsmithfan replied to Mr. Breathmask's topic in General Discussion
And by saying "nobody", you mean "you". Or are you truly speaking of everyone in the world who has an interest in film music. Yes. Okay, seriously, yes on one and no on two. But in general it seems that Varese releases material that interests a very, very small demographic. And why single me out? Other people have already eluded to what I said. I just tried to make a joke out of it. -
New Varese Sarabande Club releases
Goldsmithfan replied to Mr. Breathmask's topic in General Discussion
It seems that Varese has a weird habit of making most of their Club Releases pointless and then every once in a while sneaking something good in. Maybe they're trying to play mind games. Maybe they work for the government. I bet that everyone at Varese is a Fed. And they're doing tests on the film score community trying to see what makes us tick and what stimuli will make us mistakenly think that they've changed before slapping us in the face with a bunch of garbage releases! That would make a good crappy B-movie with an atrocious score by Alfonzo Malone. Yeah! And then Varese could release 3000 copies of it in ten years! There's something to look forward to. -
Berman definitely deserves 'ten lashes in public square' for firing Jones. I'd have fired McCarthy, but that's me. Ghostbusters definitely deserves a release. And how is it that the first two Indy scores are so popular yet OOP? WTF?!? Same thing for the two Conan scores, namely the first.
-
I was just thinking the other day about how they should release a LOT more of the music than they have. Especially Jones' work. He did an extraordinary job, especially for television scoring. I'd be really interested in Datalore, Brothers, The Naked Now, Q-Who? (A suite of material from this score is available on his website.) and pretty much any other score Jones wrote for the series with the exception of Devil's Due.

Music from the Movies releases Jerry Goldsmith DVD
Goldsmithfan replied to FrankV's topic in General Discussion
I'm not even going to censor myself. That is fucking ridiculously cold. Maybe if you weren't going to such pains to sound like an asshole then you'd find out that the documentary was made before Goldsmith died and the DVD project was started before as well. Jesus Christ, stupidity pisses me off more than anything. Congrats, you take the cake. -
Where was this "good news" advertised? I don't recall reading anything about a possible JW release for the Varese Club. Just pure speculation and wishful thinking. I was initially thrilled that Varese had taken the time and effort to locate, transfer, remaster, and release such gems as Bernstein's THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL and STRIPES and Goldsmith's rejected ALIEN NATION (although this one doesn't interest me in the bit) in their latest batch, but after reading the posts above, I've seen the error of my ways and have come up with another idea: Let's draw up a petiition and demand that Varese release at least one John Williams score with every set of Club CDs. And as penalty for not doing so, they must close up shop and never reopen their doors. I mean, what's the use of unleashing these limited edition (and limited appeal) Club CDs if John Williams is not represented in EACH AND EVERY batch! What company in their right mind would not release a John Williams score if given the opportunity. All those unreleased scores are just lying around out there in the Studios, who are just waiting for some music label to come along and release them. The Studios are practically on their hands and knees, begging someone to take the master tapes off their hands and produce a commercial CD so that the millions of film music fans in the world can finally enjoy the fruits of Williams' labor. No expense is spared by the Studios to preserve these tapes before they turn into vinegar and are rendered useless. Shame on Varese for not accepting the Studios offers to preserve and release these treasures! And for that matter, shame on FSM, Intrada, La-La Land, Percepto, Prometheus, Perseverance, Silva, Rhino Handmade, Numenorean, Film Music Society, and all the other boutique labels who release tons of non-Williams film music CDs, when they have all the opportunities in the world to mine the unreleased Williams scores. They need to open their arms and give in to the pleas from the Studios. Let's petition these labels, too. Thank god that labels like Bay Cities, PEG, Ryko, Southern Cross, Chapter III, and Big Screen Music have folded, or else we'd have to petition them as well! Film music labels beware: RELEASE JOHN WILLIAMS SCORES OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES!!! Yeah . . . There are tons of composers who've had it MUCH worse than Williams. You make it sound like he's overlooked everyday. Do you recall the name of this site? Believe me, the man gets recognition. I can see how you're disappointed but don't pull this master of filmmusic politics. It just comes off sounding ridiculous.

Hmmm . . . ?

Yes . . .

I'd like BTTF too man, but I've got two words for you: ALIEN NATION! It's the best CD club release I've seen since Predator.

Who should do the music for the upcoming Star Wars TV shows?
Goldsmithfan replied to Hlao-roo's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, I can't believe that after all the great music he wrote for First Contact he hasn't done any major films on his own. I guess he likes doing SG1 though. Either that or he's stuck. -
That's an opinion. AN OPINION

That movie should be f***ing awesome. I've been looking forward to it for a little while myself. I prefer A Close Shave.

ENTEPRISE: The Final Score by Dennis McCarthy
Goldsmithfan replied to fordat1@aol.com's topic in General Discussion
I forgot about Generations. It was pretty good. But as far as his television work after the second season of TNG it was basically, "Hey Dennis, which dissonance do you plan to use this week?" "Well . . . I plan to combine C sharp with a C flat and B. I think that should cause a wonderful dissonance in time for the commercial break."
